We're joined by Senator John Cornyn. Senator, I think this is the first time we've been lucky enough to have you on our program in the eight years we're doing the show. So welcome to the show. Well, I'm sorry for the delay, but we'll try to make up for it in the future. Before we get to the politics at hand as far as you're running for re-election, let's talk a little bit about Venezuela. You've heard a lot of Democrats complaining about not being informed ahead of time about what was planned in Venezuela. Did you know ahead of time what was going to happen? And what do you think of the job that President Trump did with this? Well, I don't think it was any surprise to anybody who's been paying attention with the buildup of military assets in the Caribbean. But I didn't know exactly what was going to happen until after it happened. But I think, Jimmy, the most important thing I think to emphasize here is this was a law enforcement operation. We didn't declare war against Venezuela. We didn't invade a foreign country. We arrested somebody who'd been under indictment. in federal court since 2020, and then basically removed them from the country and left the country and its leadership otherwise intact. So I fully support what the president has done, but I don't think it's necessarily the future is going to be an easy road. ahead, but I think it's worth doing, and I'm glad he did it. Well, and I'm wondering if you think that there's going to be more potential dictators that may fall. Colombia comes to mind. It's a very similar situation in Colombia.

2:37

Yeah, I think if I were folks in Nicaragua in Colombia and some of these other countries run by dictators in the Western Hemisphere, I'd be a little nervous. And a couple of folks who were still in leadership positions in Venezuela, who are also under indictment in federal court in the United States. I think that gives the president a lot of leverage and Marco Rubio. to get them to cooperate with us. Hopefully, Venezuela can have elections and elect their own leaders now free of Maduro and his stud. The president has been asked, as you know, John Cornyn numerous times about who's in charge in Venezuela. And he basically said, we are in charge of Venezuela. From a practical standpoint, what happened there as far as our ability to go in and get Maduro could not have happened without cooperation. from the military in Venezuela, I'm assuming, so they must have been on the same page before we even bothered to go in. Is it safe to say that the CIA is really in charge right now as it relates to Venezuela? No, they're certainly involved. I'm a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and, of course, we have assets and countries all around the world, including Venezuela. And I don't think the operation that you saw our military conduct would have been possible without the expertise of the CIA and other parts of our intelligence community. I think President Trump is now delegated. Marco Rubio, the job of working through a transition. I think this is a transitional period. And it's going to be, there's going to be some ups and downs. But I think openly the goal is free and fair elections. But right now, the president has decided to leave the vice president in place along and with others to try to prevent the destabilization of the country. which we saw, for example, in Iraq after debaptification. And I think it's a wise decision, but it's also brought with a lot of difficulty. I want to ask you, too, John Cornyn about your reelection or attempt to be reelected. You're facing some stiff competition as far as getting the Republican nomination. As a matter of fact, I would love to know what the all-time record is for a senator, an incumbent senator. spending ad money before a primary, because I have a sneaking suspicion. You probably broke it. Well, there have been a number of folks who are super PACs and things like that that have been supporting Wesley Hunt, and of course, Ken Paxton has one as well. We've had a lot of good support trying to remind people of my record. 99% plus voting records supporting President Trump, the fact I've been endorsed by the Border Patrol Union because of my efforts.

5:44

My leadership efforts to work with the president on establishing a secure border. And when you run every six years in a state as big as Texas with as much in migration as we've had, it's expensive to remind people what your record is. And that's simply what we've done in the run up here at the March 3rd primary. All right, sir, but we're up against the clock. I'd love to ask you more, and maybe we can get back together before the primary season to talk a little bit more about all this. But thank you for taking the time today. Okay, of course. Thank you.
