News Radio 740 KTRH. It's time now for the news. Here's Eric Sharp. Good morning, 501 on News Radio 740 KTRH. This news brought to you by Allied signing and windows. Our top story this hour. President Trump fires his attorney general in the latest cabinet shakeup of his second term. During her 14 months as Attorney General, Pam Bondi faced criticism from both parties over the Justice Department's release of Jeffrey Epstein-related files and investigations of perceived political enemies of President Trump. The president says Pam Bondi is a great American patriot and loyal friend, crediting her with a drop in crime and murder rates across the country. Pam Bondi joined President Trump earlier this week to hear arguments at the Supreme Court. She says she will transition to the private sector. Deputy Attorney General Todd. Todd Blanche will serve as acting AG until a new nominee is confirmed. At the White House, Jared Halpern, Fox News. President Trump warning that there is much more to follow. After sharing footage of a major Iranian bridge strike, Iranian State TV reported that at least two people were killed, several others injured in the attack. The B1 bridge was apparently hit twice as the president vowed to escalate the war against Tehran if its leaders do not agree to a peace deal in the coming weeks. Chuck Schumer losing control of the Democrats as the progressive movement and father time pass him by. Republican strategist Matt Locke says that Chuck Schumer's facing the next wave of socialist behind him because he's not far left enough.
Everybody's trying to out left everybody. They're trying to go farther and farther and farther and farther to the left. And they've created this voting block that wants more liberal socialistic policies. And I think Chuck's going to find his way on the outs eventually. I just don't think he sticks around law. He says that they have created a monster that'll turn on them when they don't get what they want. The Senate has again sent the House a funding bill for DHS that doesn't include ICE or CBP with those agencies to be funded in a second bill. Senate Majority Leader John Doon says that he and House Speaker Mike Johnson talked after Johnson rejected the same bill just a week ago. What's changed between last week and today, obviously, is I think a realization that of all the options that are out there, this is the best option. President Trump giving Republicans until June 1st to get a DHS funding bill passed. In the meantime, he's signing that executive order to continue paying all DHS employees. with existing funds. The House isn't set to come back into session to pass the Senate's DHS funding bill till the 13th, but the President does actually have the power to order members of the House to come back to D.C. The Constitution does say under extraordinary occasions, the President can use this power. If you go back and look at when it was used, it was used by Hoover in the Great Depression for farm relief by FDR. Former RNC Chairman Reince Previs says that if Trump actually did this, it would put a lot of pressure on both the House and Senate to break the impasse and get something done. Chicago's public school issues are appearing to be getting worse, with one school's enrollment declining so far that the teacher-student ratio is almost one-to-one. In short, it's becoming a ghost school. Despite this, the school is still open, and you can thank the teachers unions for that. Teachers unions fight to keep the doors open, even though that money would be better spent in other schools that are doing a better job. The teachers would even be better off. Corey DeAngelis with the Heritage Foundation says the conditions to create ghost schools exist here in Texas, too. Enrollments dropping and staffing is increasing in the Texas public school system, and superintendents are making more money than we've ever seen before. He did say the recent closing of 12 HISD schools is a good. good sign that we aren't headed down the same path. Ethan Buchanan, News Radio 740, KTRH. A new study shows self-affirmations from AI chatbots can harm human relationships. The result of a new Stanford study shows that the participants preferred chatbot responses that validated their behavior. Cyber experts and attorney Jody Neal says these messages affect the brain's chemistry. For younger people, I worry about the chemical frequency in their brains from getting the dopamine hit of being told that they're right. Excess dopamine can lead to impulse behavior, hallucinations, or destructive behavior. She says it's going to require lawmakers to step in to protect children and the public. KTRH Newstime 506 at Texas summer camp for 27 kids and counselors were killed in the flood wants to reopen this summer.
The owners of Camp Mystic are asking the state for a license to open a section of the camp that was untouched by the wall of water. It's far away from the part where cabins got torn apart. State Representative Wes Verdell, whose district includes the hill country, says the camp has complied with every part of the new rules. It's installed a lot of flood warning systems towers along the river. State officials say the approval process will take weeks. They review applications and the order they're received, and Mystics was filed at the... last minute. And that was KTRH's Beth Myers. The Astros were off yesterday. They opened up their first road trip of the season out west tonight in Sacramento against the athletics. You can hear tonight's game on KTRH. First pitch is at 840. I'm Eric Sharp on Houston's news, weather and traffic station. News Radio 740, KTRH. The tools you need to take on the day. News in the morning weather and traffic. This is Houston's morning news with Jimmy Amy Coney Barrett. Bear me a chocolate egg. The egg I want to see in there's chocolate. 508 our time here in Houston's morning news. All right, today's good Friday. Easter Sunday's coming up. And even if you are not particularly religious, I'm sure Easter has its own connotations for you. So I'm going to throw a question today right out there. Favorite item you ever had in your Easter basket? Whether it's that giant solid chocolate rabbit? or whatever it may be. My favorite thing was the little chocolate Easter eggs because I like to pop those in my mouth and let them melt in my mouth when I was a kid. I wonder what, and what are, what's the going thing for Easter baskets now? For those you that are buying for kids and grandkids, what do kids have in Easter baskets now? Is the same things that we had when we were little kids? Or has that changed? Have we gone in a different direction? You can go to the iHeart radio app, KTRH, first name where he's calling from, and answer the Easter basket question. Or you can also comment, we'll get to this and in short order here, Pam Bondi out. What do you think Pam Bondi got fired? I've heard all the speculation of all the difference things that she did that pissed off Trump, but I'm not sure that we've hit upon one yet. And by the way, there's at least a few out there who think the timing of this is very interesting. Because after all, Ken Paxton seems like he would be a great choice for U.S. Attorney General, right? Coming from Texas and then he wouldn't be running against John Cornyn anymore. But getting him confirmed would be really hard to do. We'll get into that in just a bit. But let's get back to the candy question here. This weekend, the number one thing that people said they are buying this weekend is candy. 92% of people said candy. Number one answer. It overtook food. It overtook ham. It overtook whatever, you know, whatever a traditional meal might be in your household for Easter. It overtook all that. Candy, far and away, number one. 92%, 64% said gifts. 53% said decorations. 51% said clothing. Like maybe a new outfit for Easter. 46% said flowers and 46% said greeting cards, but candy was far and away number one. American spending on Easter expected to reach a record total this year, $24.9 billion. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean that we're buying more things for Easter, just that Easter's become more expensive, especially chocolate.
So that might have an impact on what goes in that Easter basket too. Previous record was $24 billion. So we're going to spend $24.9 this year. That was in 2023 when we spent $24 billion. $510. Time for traffic and weather together. Those little egg things, do they still make them? They're not even shape like real eggs. They're elongated. I mean, there would have to be something seriously wrong with that chicken. They're like this elongated candy egg, and the outside is different colors, like four or five little colors, all pastels. As long as they taste the same, I don't care what they look like. And they got that little cream that's probably made out of glue or something, and they're super sweet, and you can just kind of chew on some. I'll try to Google it. Let's sit. Terry, play the home game with me. 210. Oh, 2.10. All right, here we go. Ooh, the North Street Bridge. Nice. Look up at the top there. Tell me what you see. It's so pretty. I see buildings. Oh, look at that pretty shot of the downtown skyline. This is the Nord Freeway, Nord Street Bridge. If you go there, don't bother the people in the neighborhood. Just be nice and quiet, but it's a great view if you want to take pictures and it goes further back. That's actually a good indicator for two things. One, your weather and my traffic. It shows me how the North freeways coming in as we approach because when things gunch up you'll see it right there as we back up now 24 minutes in from woodlands parkway on 288 we look good manville 22 minutes in southwest freeway 21 minutes from the uh razas river bridge and we're looking east techs coming down from the sticks 19 minutes from umbel i'm sky mike from the generator super center dot com traffic center from our kTR h top tax defenders 24 hour weather senator smith is here i don't know that these are a well i guess if do the Easter egg HUD early on Saturday it might work out or you have to wait to what time on Sunday do you think the rain is gone? Oh, golly. Whatever time you want it to be gone. That's, I mean, so there's actually a little bit of uncertainty into how impactful the front will be. In other words, will it get through here far enough that we'll get dry air? like just drier and not have to worry about rain, or is there going to be enough moisture that we're still dealing with some rain? At this point, I honestly think we're still going to see some rain, but not everybody. So that's why that's kind of like a, that's a trap for me. What are you doing, setting trash? You're hedging your bets, I can tell. Okay. Yes, I am because I'm not completely confident the cold front's going to be totally out of here just yet. I think it's going to be kind of hanging around. All right. Back to today. Oh, we do have some rain. I've seen some showers near the coast. A little tiny light showers. 30% chance of a shower, maybe a rumble of thunder today, 60% chance that you're going to get wet tomorrow. And most of that will be in the afternoon. You might run into a little bit of rain in the morning, but most of it in the afternoon. Loaded mid-80s today and tomorrow. Sunday, we have a 40%. I'm giving it a 40% chance of mainly showers you might hear rumble of thunder. We will be cooler. That much I feel very confident.

It is 520 here on Houston's morning news, but we won't have any Bloomberg report for you this morning. It is Good Friday. Markets are not open on Good Friday, so we don't have to worry about what Wall Street is doing today. Although there is some economic data coming out today. The jobs report for March is supposed to be out this morning, so we'll probably have that before the end of the show. And, of course, the big story this morning is the firing of Pam Bondi. This is the second brother high-profile cabinet member. who has been fired by the president in the last week. It's beginning to sound like the apprentice over there as heads roll. It's usually, you know, about this point in, it seems to me at this point in his first term, people started to lose their jobs. So the speculation has begun on why Pam Bondi got fired and we'll speculate along with the experts coming up next. First, we've got traffic and weather together. Hey, it's Ryan Sechrest here. It's definitely a good Friday so far. So I'll tell you what I'll do. I've just got some news this morning that the rest of the media, do they have it? I don't know. So here's the deal. Katie Freeway, got this news about the White Oak Bayou Project, which says all that road work we've got on I-10 downtown. They're going to do some lane shift Tuesday night. They're going to shut off the Taylor Street exit. Okay, no big deal to us. Also, that's going to be a total closure. of the westbound entrance ramp from Louisiana Street. So what they're going to do, they're going to do a big shift here. And the young lady that writes this, she says I-10 Westbound from Heights Boulevard to North Maine. Well, she's got it backwards, but that's all right. They're going to close alternating lanes Wednesday night and do that overnight so they can do the shift. What an excellent plan by TechSOT. I think they've done such a fantastic job here. Also, what? That new main lane bridge is going to be added on. So it's probably going to be like six fat lanes and a bouncy house wall on both sides. I bet it's a great plan by tech stock. I'm Sky Mike in the Ability Tree Experts Traffic Center. Robar. KTRH. Top tax defenders 24-hour weather center, mostly cloudy 83 for today, morning clouds. Thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some could be strong tomorrow with a high temperature right about 80. Scattered storms Saturday night, followed by overnight showers. You're fired. Pam Bondi, 523 is our time here in Houston's morning news. Yep. It's getting to look like the apprentice again over there at the White House as we've lost another high-profile member of the Trump administration. Last week it was Kristi Noem. This week it's Pam Bondi's turn. And clearly she did something or didn't do something. as the case may be, to concern the President of the United States. Miranda Devine on Fox yesterday speculating about what she has heard, about what...
What set the president off? I think the writing was on the wall for a while with Pam Bondi. She had some good successes. She's named them in her farewell truth social, including 24 victories in the Supreme Court. But she never really recovered from her early mistakes over Epstein. As Susie Wiles even said, she whiffed it when it came to those binders that she gave to the influences and saying that she had the Epstein files on her desk when there was no such thing. So that's dogged her. And I just don't think she was aggressive enough for Donald Trump's liking when it came to de-weaponising the Department of Justice or finding accountability from those people who did weaponise the department against him. And, you know, she had several losses, whether it was Letitia James or James Comey, any ability to bring accountability there didn't happen. And there's only nine months left. You know, midterms, if the Democrats win, they only have to win three seats, then they're in charge and all the opportunities are gone. So that, and then Eric Swalwell's story, I find very curious. I think it's being leaked. She had, I mean, the DOJ is full of snakes. And I think there are people who were gunning to get rid of her. And the fact that Chuck Schumer doesn't like her is a positive, I think. But the Eric Swalwell story, you know, the Washington Post first had that leak that the FBI was looking to release all the sort of Fang Fang files about his entanglement with the Chinese spy. And I guess fingers were being pointed at Pam Bondi. But I don't know of any evidence of a friendship between her and Eric Swalwell. I would find that very unusual. They may be cordial, but he's an anti-Trump Democrat and she's a pro-Trump Republican. I doubt very much that she would be helping him in particular. Hang on. What was that word she? Cordial? Cordial. Oh, she meant cordial. Okay. You know, the Australians and the Brits, they pronounce words a little bit differently than we do. Cordial, okay. I don't know if they're cordial or not. I would find it very, very difficult to believe that Pam Bondi would do anything for Eric Swalwell. I mean, that, that turd does not deserve any help whatsoever, nor would I think that she would. I mean, she's always been very loyal. She's always been a conservative. I don't know what the point would be of her doing something like that. What would be the upside? I mean, does she like the guy that much? I don't think so. So that one, I think we might be able to dismiss it just as an incorrect rumor. That makes no sense to me. 527 now here in Houston's Morning News.

California's $20 an hour fast food wage increase is not paying off as they expected according to a new study. A study conducted by the University of California shows the AB1228 law mandating restaurant owners to increase workers' wages isn't bringing state lawmakers the results they expected. Hospitality expert Jonathan Horowitz says restaurant owners have to compensate for higher labor costs. Reduction in hours, for example, or a turn towards technology where the reliance on human labor will be less. With businesses turning to kiosk instead of human. along with higher menu prices, it seems to be counterproductive. I'm Erica Smith, News Radio 740, KTRH. And in San Antonio, the head of the Harlandale School District. Paid $630,000 a year. That's the top in the state. This, he says, is why property taxes keep going up. News Radio 740, KTRH. Houston's morning news continues with Jimmy Amy Coney Barrett. A little love song there for Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who evidently have made a deal with each other. Was it just the other day that Mike Johnson said that the Senate funding bill on DHS was a crap sandwich? Yeah, he did. He called it a crap sandwich. Some of us would call it a double-decker crap sandwich. But now House Republicans, as they have a tendency to do, have backed off their opposition to the Senate bill because, well, two reasons. Number one, the Senate won't pass the bill any other way. And, well, that and they do what they always do. Republicans are very good at compromising with Democrats. Democrats never compromised with Republicans. It's a one-way street. And yet we continue to drive down that one. We're driving the wrong way down a one-way street. And here come the Democrats. You see the headlights. They're coming right for you. It's going to be a head-on collision. But you won't get off the road, will you? Okay. Well, here's the deal. The bill will partially fund DHS. And by that, I mean everything in DHS with the exception of the ones that they don't like, Border Patrol and ICE. So they won't get funded. So they made a joint statement here. Johnson and John Thune said, quote, in the coming days, Republicans in the Senate and the House will be following through in the president's directed by fully funding the entire Department of Homeland Security on two parallel tracks through the appropriation process and through the reconciliation process. They'll fund everything but immigration and customs enforcement and border patrol. through the appropriations process where you have in the Senate have to have 60 votes in order to pass it. And then through the reconciliation process, they will separately fund those two organizations, ICE and Border Patrol, for three years. For that, they just need a simple majority. So everything ends up getting funded, including ICE and Border Patrol. They just have to go through this game so the Democrats are not in a position where they have to vote in favor of funding those two things. 540, time for traffic and weathered together. A crap sandwich. With extra mayoes, have you ever, Jimmy Amy Coney Barrett? Have you ever had a cat food sandwich or heard of a cat food sandwich? No, I fear it might actually be made with cat food. It was. So I used to work. It's a 10-second story. I used to work down the road at this place with a couple of gentlemen named Hudson and Harrigan, and they had a problem with people overnight that were eating food from other people from the refrigerator. Oh, okay. And that is how they invented the cat food sandwich.
The end. It must have been canned cat food. It fixed it. 2.90. On the westbound at 43rd, I got a stall truck. It's an exit ramp. Let's call that a right shoulder for now. This is outbound. A lot of speculation about what went wrong with Pam Bondi. Your thoughts on that, sir? Well, you know, there's a lot of stories, but I think overall she just was, I wouldn't say she was worthless, but she was pretty darn near worthless when it came to actually going after the leftists that have literally told us they want to overthrow this government, that have organized riots. you know, violent protest that turned into riots, spoken out on behalf of Hamas. people who, you know, all these different things that occur around the country are all connected, whether they're funded by the same people, the verbiage is the same, the red, green, the whites. I've never even heard those words come out of her mouth. That's the relationship between Islam and communism and how they've worked for years to basically unseat this country. And they know, they have to know that that is what, That red-green alliance, that leftist group is what went after Trump. It's what went after many people who work in his administration. They try to get Trump put in jail and try to derail everything he's done. Never once have you heard any of that, anything about that from Pam Bondi, or for that matter, Kash Patel, or even really Tulsi Gabbard. I mean, we do not hear. from any of these agency leaders about that national security threat, which is the biggest national security threat that we have. You mentioned three very strong names there. So let's look in a little bit more insight into that for just a second before we go on to some of the other reasons that why she might be gone. What is the fair factor here? Why do you think all these agency heads are afraid to go after these billionaires and these organizations that are funding all this? Well, you know, I don't know. There's many different reasons that that could be. But I will tell you, when we look at the totality of the circumstances, I think that, so that President Trump, I'm a huge supporter of President Trump. I think that he was basically people tried to kill him and then kill his career. And then end the election and it did work when Biden got elected. So all these things occurred. And we know that. And when we see these individuals that are in these agencies that have been put there by President Trump, this is the one criticism that I really have of President Trump. He knows economics. He knows world affairs. He knows how to lead the military for sure. But he is not in tune with law enforcement and the Department of Justice. And that has been his downfall for both of its administrations, is that he put people in charge that we all could tell from the beginning that they were not going to go after the people that they should have because I think Pam Bondi and Kash Patel, these people are clickbaiters. They're more of social media influencers than they are agency leaders. And, you know, Kash Patel, for instance, he's allowed the FBI to do their job.
Okay, that's great. But not once, as he said anything about the leftists that are trying to take over and ruin our country. Nothing. So I think that right there, whether that's specifically what President Trump keyed in on or not, I think that he's feeling that. And that is probably one of the things that has led to the ouster of Pam Bondi. I think Kristi Noem, another clickbaiter. I don't think she did herself any favors the entire time she was there. So my suggestion to President Trump is that he not put politicians. He doesn't put social media influencers. And whoever's telling me to put these people in there, he should not listen to them. And he should start looking for people who are dedicated individuals from those agencies or former agency investigators, attorneys who, for the DOJ, who are meat eating attorneys and put them in there. I just think that he puts great people in these other. areas that he knows. But when it comes to law enforcement and it comes to the DOJ, he just is going off of suggestions and he needs to look for meat eaters. Well, Todd Blanks will be in there temporarily. Is that the right person for the job or do you have somebody else in mind? I've heard Lee Zeldin. I know Lee Zeldin. I think Lee Zeldin is a meat eater. He's an extremely nice guy, but he is a no-nonsense guy. I mean, if he has a task, he's going to achieve it. And that's the guy that I know, and I would be okay with him being the Attorney General. Okay. Appreciate your insight, as always. Thank you, sir. FBI Special Agent Navy SEAL, Jonathan Gilliam. It's 557.

Another cabinet position to fill is President Trump removed Pam Bondi as Attorney General, naming Deputy AG Todd Blanche as the interim AG. Many Republicans have blasted Pam Bondi over her handling of the Epstein files, but the new interim Todd Blanche says that Pam Bondi did her job. The Epstein files has been a saga that's lasted for the entire, for the past year. And what happened when the president signed the Transparency Act is the Department of Justice has now released all the files with respect to the Epstein saga. The Senate has now repassed the funding bill from last week that funds all of DHS except for ICE and CBP after a new deal with House Republicans to pass that bill, then a separate bill to fund ICE as well. Florida Senator Ashley Moody telling Fox that the entire process is broken. This needs to be done both within the Senate and the House. The people are demanding it. I go back to we need to change the rules within our own House is to make sure that we are truly serving the interests of the American people. It's not clear when the next vote will take place since the House and Senate. Both adjourned until Monday. In the meantime, President Trump says he's signing an executive order to pay all DHS employees until the shutdown ends. Well, it looks like President Trump, he could have had to call members of the House back to D.C. if he wanted the DHS and ICE funding before April 13th. If he did call those members of the House back, do they have a working strategy? Pass everything you can on a 50 plus one vote in the Senate and then use appropriations or budgetary measures to pass everything else. We'll see if it works. It's a dual track approach. Maybe the crew at Artemis 2 is going to end up being a bunch of spaceship superstars before this thing is over and done. But they're certainly getting a lot of airtime on TV. And that's, I, I'm enjoying it. I'm enjoying seeing it. I'm enjoying seeing their enthusiasm. It's made me more enthusiastic about the space program. They were talking with ABC yesterday about, first of all, the view. It's a million-dollar view to say the least outside of that space capsule of planet Earth. And, of course, they'll eventually get around to the plumbing problem. It's just incredible. You're on the way to the moon right now. What is it that you're feeling? Well, first and foremost, we all wanted to give a shout out to our families first because we are pretty far from Earth and we have not gotten to say hi to them yet. But there was a moment about an hour ago where Mission Control Houston reoriented our spacecraft as the sun was setting behind the Earth. And I don't know what we all expected to see in that moment, but you could see the entire globe from pole to pole. You could see Africa, Europe. And if you looked really close, you could see the northern lights. It was the most spectacular moment. And it paused all four of us in our tracks. What do you want to tell Americans here at home who are watching this right now? First and foremost, I would just like to say, thank you. Your support and trust in us has enabled this and so many people that have worked for so long to make this possible. But also we're just getting started. We have a lot of mission left ahead of us. And so I really want to tell them, stay tuned and keep tabs on what's going on. Jeremy, I know this is your first time in space. And you're surrounded by all of these space vets. What's it been like for you that this is your first mission there? There has been a tremendous amount of disbelief for me. It's just so extraordinary. I just kept saying to them yesterday, like, I really like it up here. I wish I could have got here sooner. It's just such a tremendous place to be. The views are extraordinary. It's really fun to be floating around. It just makes me feel like a little kid. I heard that there was a little bit of an issue with the toilet. Which one of you was the plumber? I'll take that one. I'm the space plumber. I'm proud to call myself the space plumber. I like to say that it is probably the most important piece of equipment on board. We've got those high gas prices that we're dealing with right now, but might that be offset? by what is going on with the IRS refunds bigger than we've seen in a long, long time. People are getting some pretty big checks. And how do we think people are going to spend that money? Are they going to stimulate the economy? Are they going to... Stashed somewhere. More on that story coming up next. First, let's do traffic and weather together, starting with you, Skymite. Let's check. Graham Parkway, you big shots coming up from Montvelview to New Caney. We are wide open for now. It's only got two lanes. I wish we had extra. I wish I was 5'8. We're in good shape here. New Caney to Tomball. From our KTRH, top tax defenders, 24-hour weather center for today, mostly cloudy, 30% shower or storm chance, 83. Morning clouds, thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some could be strong tomorrow. High temperature right about 80, 60% chance of that. Then Easter Sunday, some more scattered showers and storms are in the forecast with a high near 70. Much cooler. Temperature right now is still 74 at your official severe weather station. News Radio 740, KTRH.

Our next update comes your way at 6.30. News is already happening. So we're off to a busy start. Fast. Whatever is next in Venezuela. Keep up the events of the day. Now you know. News Radio 740. KTRH. Well, we all know the money talks, and we also know what walks. But what we don't know is what sort of economic impact, these big tax refunds are likely to have. Richard Rosso joins us, certified financial planner. I don't know what Americans are planning to do with these big tax refunds. Do you think most people are going to save them, or do you think most people are going to stimulate the economy with them? I think my tax refund went to Skymic, because I haven't gotten one. Neither have I owe this year. Right, right. Me too. Me too. We must be doing something right. We're either doing something right or wrong. I'm not sure which. Well, listen, refunds are up over 10% this year. And this is a six week of reporting. You look at filing season, up 23 billion for... refunds that's that's 2002 billion bucks um average refunds up close to 11% at 3,571 dollars it's not chump change so um so so far so good um the issue is what do we do with these refunds well first of all like you and i guess we don't have to worry about it um but a lot of people will spend the money You know, they'll divvy it out. Most will spend. I think the biggest problem you have is this clash of higher gas prices. And I don't know. the animal spirits around whether or not people feel like, oh, great, I got this refund. And guess what I'm going to do with it? I got to go put it into my gas tank. Oh. So I don't know, you know, consumer sentiment fell 6% in March. And that's the lowest level since December 2025. And that's a cross-age and political party. And that's, you know, escalating gas prices.
volatile markets. So I don't know if the tax refund, as great as it is, is going to override that. But listen, it's not going to make anybody unhappy. I just don't know how happy people are going to be when they have to put it into gas. It would be nice if gas prices were head lower, too. That would be great. But that's what people get through. The money's going to enter the economy. And as consumers, that is exactly what we do. Okay. And that all makes sense to me. But you're right. What we don't know is the emotion of the whole thing. It's like higher gas prices right now. We paid much higher gas prices during the Biden years. The average price was well over $4 a gallon for a period of time. So it's not like we haven't done this before. Yeah, but where was it in the news? All you have in the news now, now all of a sudden, Democrats really care about higher gas prices. But before, in the mainstream media, they care about it. They don't care about it now. You don't hear a lot about these refunds. You hear more about gas prices going up and the after effect of that. So what people have to do is say, hey, what am I going to do with this money? I understand that gas prices are up. It's temporary due to the Iran conflict. But, hey. We've got this extra money right before summer vacation, and that's probably where you're going to see it. Maybe when people go on a vacation and this is over, gas prices come down, hopefully before the midterms, you see better consumer sentiment numbers out of the University of Michigan. Well, and we're also expecting some other numbers today, jobs numbers. What do you expect to see happen there? Jobs numbers, yeah. Well, we had a really good ADP number. you know, recently. So we're expecting positive job growth. You know, the whole thing with AI, and this is where it's been discouraged, the job market and manufacturing, and I've mentioned to this to you before, Jimmy, I mean, manufacturing is the best it's been. I mean, this is the fourth industrial revolution. But if you, you know, entry-level jobs are tough to get. AI has taken them. But the opportunities that are going to come from AI, like I wish I was 20-something again at time with what's coming. And I would embrace this AI and study the heck out of it and get that skill that I need. The problem is there are jobs that even AI requires. We don't have the skill labor for it here. Yeah. So there's a big disconnect between the jobs that are available when you look at the Joltz report and the number of job openings and the people that actually can fill those jobs here in the United States. Well, and the problem is, you're right, we're not training people in those jobs. Correct. Universities are not, certainly have not embraced it, at least not up until this point. They've not embraced it very much, have they? Maybe it should be DAI instead of DEI. Maybe you're right. What do you think? You might be right. Richard Rosso, have a great weekend. Thank you. Richard Rosso, certified financial planner. It's 627.

Our top story this hour, the U.S. hitting more Iranian infrastructure after President Trump threatened to bomb the country, quote, into the stone ages if a deal can't be reached. Sencom commander Admiral Brad Cooper posted that it's undeniable that progress is being made. The president's post on truth socially posted video of a bridge that was being destroyed. That's the B1 bridge, about 25 miles west of Tehran. The president posted the video with the text. It's time for Iran to make a deal before it's too late. Iranian foreign minister Abbasaraji countered with a post saying striking civilian structures won't compel Iranians to surrender. It only conveys defeat and moral collapse of an enemy. in disarray. That's Fox's Mike Tobin in Tel Aviv. Iran's foreign minister said that leaders are communicating with special envoy Steve Witkoff, but denied negotiations are taking place. California's law mandating restaurants to pay their fast food workers a $20 an hour wage isn't bringing the results that lawmakers were looking for. Hospitality expert Jonathan Horowitz says that restaurants are a low-margin business to begin with. Labor, food costs, inflation in general rent, it puts additional economic pressure on the operators. Orwood says forcing restaurants to pass along operational costs to the customers. We see that now a lot with credit card swipe fees, seeing as added line item that may be 3 or 3.5%. He says although the higher wage has boosted demand for these jobs, the study shows the higher labor costs created less demand for workers. There's a damning new report looking at how much public workers are getting paid here in Texas.
The amount of tax dollars funding local government employees is skyrocketing. Taxpayers are absolutely getting hosed every which way when it comes to local government salaries. James Cantero with the Texas Public Policy Foundation says the average worker for the city of Austin is being paid twice as much as the city's median income. And in San Antonio, the head of the Harlandale School District is paid $630,000 a year, tops in the state. This, he says, is why property taxes keep going up. That was KTRH's Rex Oates. With tax season winding down, returns show big gains for Americans with the average tax refund up 11% this year. Financial planner Richard Rosso says that this was predictable after the big, beautiful bill passed last year. We talked earlier in the year that we should expect higher tax refunds. And I think that that's positives. But I do think it's unfortunate the news of gas prices. It's just easier clickbait than tax refunds. Hey, it's Ryan Sechrest here. According to the comptroller's office, all schools that are eligible, including Islamic schools, have been approved and received registration links for the Texas School Choice Voucher Program.
There doesn't really seem to be much the comptroller's office could have done here. We live in America, so there's freedom of religion. This voucher program, especially since it's using taxpayer dollars, it can't discriminate how it's used. Tony Ortiz with current revolt says there isn't any way to stop this from happening now. If you're a Christian, you're not happy about any of your taxpayer dollars going to Islamic schools. Terrorist Associated or not, that's not really an option for you. It's going to those schools. The Comptroller's Office has told us that they're still vetting schools to make sure the funds are used properly. Ethan Buchanan, News Radio 740, KTRH. There's local outrage after a report from the Texan uncovered that students from Kingwood High School took a field trip to a Spanish Islamic center. State rep Katrina Pearson telling KTRH that this is why they formed the Sharia Free Texas Caucus. This is definitely something the caucus should look into. We should be asking those questions. It isn't about just one religion. It's about keeping parents in charge of their children and what they're being exposed to, in particular, on the taxpayer dime while they're at public schools. We did reach out to the school district, but they didn't reply to the request for comment. Now that the $7,500 federal electric vehicle tax credit has come and gone, new EV sales has dropped almost 30%. I'm Eric Sharp on Houston's News Weather and Traffic Station. News Radio 740 KTRH. World events, national headlines. Houston's Morning News with Jimmy Amy Coney Barrett. 637 here on Houston's Morning News. I thought this is kind of interesting. Two consumer bankruptcy attorneys say that they've noticed a sizable uptick in Gen Z and young millennial clients through the ages of 25 and 35 filing for bankruptcy.
One of them said their share has increased double, triple, what it used to be. The lawyers pointed to soaring living costs, lagging wages, and the ease of racking up credit card debt. I think they put that in the wrong order. Let's put the credit card debt first. Part of the reason why credit card debt costs what it cost. As far as the interest rates is that it's one of the things that when you declare bankruptcy, you can get out from underpaying most of the time. They said, we're definitely seeing more young filers. It's not because they're irresponsible. Wait a minute. If you're racking up massive credit card debt, you are irresponsible. I would consider that irresponsible. He goes on to say it's because they've entered adulthood during one of the most financially distorted environments and decades. Listen, I'd be the first to say. that things have gotten expensive. There's no doubt about it. I mean, you notice that every time you go to the grocery store. We're all noticing it now when we go to fill up the vehicle at the gas station. That part of it's temporary. I don't know if we're still going to be paying, you know, what we're paying for meat, for example, at the grocery store three or four years from now. Hopefully that gets less expensive as time goes on and the herd gets to where it needs to be. But you can definitely. control that credit card debt from the standpoint. And listen, this is coming from a guy who's had plenty of credit card debt in his lifetime. I made all the mistakes. I was a complete dumbass when it comes to credit cards. And I don't blame my parents for much, but I will say I wish they had had a more frank conversation with me about things like credit cards. We don't talk to our families or our kids about credit cards, even though a lot of us have made that mistake. We don't give any financial literacy classes in our homes. And we certainly don't do it in our schools. And until we start wising up to that kind of stuff at a younger age, then we're going to see things like this happen. I mean, if you are... charging groceries on a credit card and paying 18% or probably more likely 20, 22, 24, 26% interest on that. And you can't pay it off at the end of the month. That's a formula for disaster. 640, time for traffic and weather together. Talk to me about credit card. Oh, we've all done down that road, I think. Yeah. And then the divorces, dude. That doesn't help. Uh-uh, that's so much. The toll lanes, if you're on 288, that'll break you. Those toll lanes coming up northbound. Stay on the main lanes. And this week, well, yesterday, Pam Bondi, hears this from the president. You're fired. Uh-huh. So what's next? Hard to say. Although there's a lot of speculation, including the possibility that Todd Blanche, who's been named the interim U.S. Attorney General, might end up staying on in the job. He was on with Jesse Waters last night on prime time. answering some questions about what happened to Pam Bondi. A lot of what you just said about what happened to the Attorney General is simply not true. As President Trump said today, the Attorney General made our country safe again. And she is a friend, and she did a great job in the first year of this administration. And people should not forget what the Department of Justice that she came into just over a year ago. And so we are a better Justice Department. We are safer as a nation and we should all be very grateful to the attorney general for the for her sacrifice for this country and for what she did yeah i like Pam Bondi too but she didn't she didn't give swallow a heads up on the fang fang files did she I would not believe that for a second. Absolutely positively not. Okay. The president reportedly probably obviously frustrated that the case is against Jessica Tisch and Schiff and Brennan and James Comey not really going anywhere. Are you the guy that's going to be able to get that done? Look, I think the president is frustrated. Everybody is frustrated because what we saw happen for the past four years is unforgivable and can never happen again. And so certainly I don't mind the frustration. I appreciate the frustration because we do have to make sure that what happened for four years never happens again. And we don't talk about investigations, but I can tell you that the Department of Justice is working hard every day. It was working hard yesterday and we're going to keep on working hard tomorrow. I'm honored that President Trump has asked me to step in as acting and also much appreciative for what Pam Bondi did for the past year. I mean, you get the anger. I mean, what Biden and Obama did to this president. You understand there's a lot of anger about that, right? Not only do I understand, I lived it, Jesse. Don't forget, I was on your show the night two years ago, the night that President Trump was found guilty in Manhattan in the middle of the lawfare. So I do not need any kind. I had a firsthand accounting of what happened. And so, yes, I understand it. The American people understand it. And I know that the American people expect that it will never happen again. And we take that seriously. We take that seriously. At the Department of Justice, we take that seriously.
Yeah, where are the prosecutions, though? I think that's, to me, that's the most disappointing thing about Pam Bondi. Where in the world were all the prosecutions? It just didn't materialize. Despite this, the school is still open, and you can thank the teachers unions for that. Corey DeAngelis with the Heritage Foundation says the conditions to create ghost schools exist here in Texas, too. I'm Eric Sharp on Houston's News, Weather and Traffic Station. News Radio 740, KTRH. What happened? Why it happened. The information you need to start the day. Now, back to Houston's Morning News. Oh, yeah, we all have electric providers, right? 707 our time here in Houston's morning news. The question is, when you sign up for a new electric provider, should they keep your account? Can they just sell your account without you even knowing about it? Well, you're supposed to get some sort of notification. Anyway, KPRC2 crack reporter Amy Davis had that happened to her, so she did a little report on it for the rest of us. In March, NRG purchased a book of customers from budget power. SFE energy purchased customers from true power. We wanted to know why the smaller electric companies gave up those customers they worked to get. They had good rates, good plans. good customer base that became attracted for the bigger guys to purchase to make their market share bigger. Chris Coulter owns Texas power agents, an electricity broker who helps customers find the lowest rates. But even his clients have been switched mid-contract. It's a hassle. You've got a, you get a bill from somebody else. It's confusing. But it's not illegal. We checked with the Public Utility Commission. They told us as long as the electric provider notifies customers in writing of any changes 14 days in advance, and they give the customer the same time to switch providers with no penalty.
It's all fine. But check this out. When electric provider SFE Energy purchased customers from true power, it sent them this notice, letting them know that they will be charged a $3.25 convenience fee each month unless they set their bill to auto pay. Customers can switch within 14 days if they don't like this. But if you've already gone through the hassle of researching companies and plans, you've got to start that process all over. Now both SFE energy and NRG say that they always honor the electric rate and the length of the contract that customer signed with the original company. If you're switched providers and you just don't like the new company or you want to switch for any reason, again, you can do that with no penalty fee within 14 days of that switch. And if you aren't given that choice or if you get charged for switching, which some people have been charged, then you should file a complaint with the PUC. Okay, so that's how that works. I didn't realize that. Just like I didn't realize until the first time it happened to me that your mortgage can be sold. You know, the bank that you got your mortgage through, if they decide they don't want your mortgage anymore or there's somebody who wants to buy from, they can do that. You end up sending your payment to a different bank. I guess you don't care that much. I guess as long as they go ahead and provide you with the... Same terms you had before you don't care about your electric providers switching. I just hadn't heard of that happening before. 710, time for traffic and weather together on this good Friday morning. While they were there, they learned about Islam. I'm not sure exactly what aspects of Islam they learned. I also don't know who the students are, whether or not they had parental permission. what class it was that decided this would be an appropriate field trip and what the purpose of the field trip was. But I'm guessing our next guest knows a lot of that information. Katrina Pearson is a Texas State Representative. She joins us right now. She's also a member of the Sharia Free Texas Caucus. First of all, the students themselves, I assume that they went with parental permission, or am I assuming too much? Well, good morning, and I don't know. That is the question of the day. I think when the story came out, there were many people across the state who expressed deep concerns, primarily because, you know, this was supposedly a field trip and when a parent...
Here's the word field trip. They think zoo, museum, you know, something along the lines of, you know, a proper education field trip. And this was completely the opposite. And I think what we need to find out now or get the answers to all the questions that you just asked, but also the school districts need to explain why they are sacrificing institutional instruction time. public school resources, taking students to an off-campus religious facility. Because one of the things that we do know is had they taken these kids to a Christian church, there would have been lawsuits filed by the end of the day. Is there any chance? I'm trying really hard to give somebody a benefit of a doubt. I'm not quite sure why I'm trying that hard. But for the sake of argument, is there any chance that these were all students taking some sort of world religion course, and this is just part of the course? I think that's absolutely a possibility. But having said that, if that's the case, there cannot be a double standard. If this school is going to take students to one religious institution to educate them on the diversity of religion, then I would expect them to be going to multiple different religious institutions. And that's what we need to find out, because they are supposed to be treating faith equally if they are going to teach it, no exception. I agree. Now, here's something that will probably tell us. what the real purpose behind it is. Has Umbal ISD been forthcoming with any information about these field trips, or are they turning everything over to their attorneys at this point? My guess is that they would be turning everything over to their attorneys. I have not seen anything additionally. I'm not sure as parents had full disclosure. We still don't know what they were being exposed to while they were there because here's another thing when it comes to public schools. It's one thing to teach about a religion and multiple religions. If you're in this culture diversity course, which we could argue shouldn't even exist in public schools. But if so, were the parents fully informed? Was their disclosure? And more importantly, did they cross the line from teaching to influence? And I think that is what's upsetting people all across the state. And I think you have a good case for that. Because as I read the story in the text, and it sounds like these students attended some sort of a prayer service. Yes, and for many of us, that's a little deeply disturbing. But again, if they're going to claim that this was part of some sort of diversity in religion, I would expect them next to attend a Christian church and a Jewish synagogue. all of the religions, if that's what they're truly doing. If not, then this does tip the scale onto the side of influence, and that is a problem for the state, and we will be looking into that at the caucus. I'm guessing, too, that may be even a bigger problem than this particular field trip. It certainly would be that Kingwood High School, evidently, because we know from a post on Instagram, had a representative from care.
The Council for American Islamic Relations speak to high schoolers in the school. And we know that the governor has basically, has designated them a terrorist organization. There's no way they should be in a Texas school saying anything. that the Sharia Free Caucus should be looking into because when you have an organization who has been designated by the governor as a foreign terrorist organization, not to mention, it wasn't that long ago that they were an unindicted co-conspirator through the Holy Land Foundation investigation, which was caught. funneling money to Hamas in our public school speaking to our children. So yes, there is warranted to be raising red lives about this. The school district should answer those questions and absolutely something that we need to be looking into at the state level. All right, Karina. Fill us in. When you find out, appreciate it. Katrina Pearson, Texas State Representative is 727.

They said we were expecting 60,000. 178,000 jobs. More details coming up before this hour is overdone, but that's all I know for right now. But I want to get back to the Pam Bondi firing. The biggest story in the last 24 hours, I believe, is the demise of Pam Bondi as U.S. Attorney General. The question is, who will replace her? Not whether or not she's fired. She's fired. She's gone. And we can get into all the reasons that we have it all morning long. The reasons behind why she was fired. Did she mishandled the Epstein files? By all reports she did. Did she fail in her efforts to prosecute the president's enemies who deserved to be prosecuted? I would say that would also be the case. And that may be the biggest criticism is that she is aggressive as she comes across. She wasn't very aggressive with her prosecution. She was great with prosecuting crime, but not the crime that was perpetrated upon the president. So that may be the reason why she's gone. And the question is, who replaces her? I saw Mick Mulvaney. Remember him? Former White House Chief of Staff? Saw him on Sky News of all places. So this isn't getting any play probably in the United States. But he brought up a name which. I wouldn't be surprised. In fact, it's a name we all know very well. Here's Mick Mulvaney being asked about the body firing what happened and who he thinks could be next. Last question first. There's a lot of discussion here tonight, James. By the way, it's great to see you. Happy Easter to you as well. That Trump really didn't like the way she had handled the Eric Swalwell matter, that there were some rumors unsubstantiated, but that's how Washington works sometimes. that Attorney General Pam Bondi had given Eric Swalwell a heads up on the investigation into his spy girlfriend. True or not, sometimes perception is reality, and apparently that was the straw that broke the camel's back. Todd Blanche.
Donald Trump's personal lawyer and an assistant attorney general will take over on an acting basis for a temporary period of time. There's a lot of discussion of whether or not Lee Zeldin, another former colleague of mine, former house member from New York, currently the EPA administrator, the Environmental Protection Agency administrator. is on a short list apparently for the replacement. But I've got to ask James, you know, quite just out loud in the Republican circles, Ken Paxton is running for Senate as a Republican against John Cornyn in Texas. And I got to tell you, Ken Paxton is the sitting attorney general in Texas. Moving Ken Paxton to the attorney general's office in Washington solves a lot of GOP problems. It would. And we brought that up a long, long time ago, right? Would that be a possibility that some sort of a Trump administration job like Attorney General could come up for Ken Paxton to get him out of the race against John Cornyn? I mean, the timing makes you wonder just a little bit, doesn't it? Although I would have to say, I think Ken Paxton would be very difficult to get confirmed. 741, time for traffic and weathered together as we check out the drive again. Here's Sky Mike. Downtown's a little scudged-up I-10, the roadwork lifestyle at 45. Two little skinny lanes, the textile wall of death, and it's also messing up your Pierce Elevated, just a little northbound. Kevin from League City. Hey, Mike, Lake City to the Pierce Elevated in about 18, 19 minutes. Boom, banana stir. Zoom, zoom. Very nice. It's been a... heck of a morning on your tip line this morning, Nikki. Kurt Cobain didn't kill him. And Sean. And Elvis is still alive. And that's your reminder, stepped up law enforcement this weekend on the freeways. Terry, what's your favorite camera shot on the Houston Grand Star System? You know what my favorite camera shot is. 1307, the Hartman Bridge. Oh, look at that beautiful Hartman Bridge. We're looking from the Baytown side. And as you're going down toward La Port, we're wide open. You can see just a little, it's a little misty over here. If you look at this other shot, I don't know if I gave you 647. This is the... Yeah, that's the Sherman Bridge. See, there's no, there's no tower on this. This is going from the Bud Plant to 225, and we're rocking along. Oh, Tammy from Channel 13, she's flying around the chopper right now. She's like, well, Sky Mike, why is the Lynchburg ferry closed today? You know, because she talks like that. Did you know what they told me? They said it's a holiday. I had no idea. And I've always wondered why the people on the Lynchburg ferry aren't happier because if I worked on the, because they just looked so put out. If I worked on the ferry, you could shut me up. I'd have a pirate hat and a sword. I'd be, all right, matey, let's sail to Pasadena. You know, I'll be ridiculous. I am in the ability tree experts traffic center. We'd go winch in every night and drink and room at the Monument Inn. From our KTRH Generator Super Center, 24-hour weather center. Terry Smith is here to give you a very serious forecast because that's what she does. because I'm always serious. No, you're not always serious, but you're serious about the weather. I am serious about the weather. This is not small talk for me. When people say, how's the weather? They don't get necessarily the answer they were thinking. So we are seeing some slow changes over the course of the weekend, a little more rain, which we...
absolutely need badly. And less heat by the end of the weekend. So a little bit of springtime. Now, today's not going to be that much different than the last couple of days. Time for traffic and weathered together. Sky Mike is bored out of his gourd. Actually, you know, Jimmy, I have to issue a retraction here. There are no actual winches at the Monument Inn by the Lynchburg Ferry on the ship channel. In fact, it's just really nice people and the food rocks too. But they do have rum so I can do my pirate thing if I set sail on the Lynchburg Ferry. All right. Lynchburg Ferry is closed today. for the holiday. I didn't know they did that, but they're doing it. So you have to take the toll bridge, get on 610. You could take the Washburn Tunnel or the Hartman Bridge to get across. 45 Gulf Freeway rocks Dickinson now 31 minutes in. I'm Sky Mike. Speaking of fake, fake campaign commercials, specially here for the Texas Senate race. Here's the report from KHOU 11. More presidential race. Sure, give you the keys to the city. Doesn't this maybe feel legit? The ads are everywhere. Blitzing your TV, fast, constant, hard to ignore. The Senate swing. We showed some to Liam May, a media studies professor at Rice. They are kind of astonishing. Like this, John Cornyn's Senate campaign ad. It features an AI version of Ken Paxton parting with alleged mistresses at his love shack. They're mesmerizing a little bit to see, like, they're almost like the realization of kind of a political fantasy for the opponent. With AI, anything can now come to life in a political attack ad. It's shockingly easy. to generate this content. Easy and also much cheaper. What used to take a team of consultants now can be done in hours. But political strategist George Hornado says it raises all sorts of ethical questions. The moment you start putting words in an opponent's mouth, you know, altering video, you know, fabricating scenarios that didn't happen, then that's deception. It's not the way. that we should go about our politics. So far, many campaigns not holding back. At least 15 AI ads have run nationwide. Every day gets better for us. From fake videos of Democrat Chuck Schumer. I've got the press on a string. To Republican Elise DeFonic. But most of the AI action happening in Texas's high-stake Senate race. Oh, I remember this one. Like this deep fake of James Talarico reading his own past tweets. It was put out by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. A small AI disclosure sits in the corner. It's unsurious, and I think a lot of voters will feel that way as well. The ads, Stoking concerns AI technology, could mislead voters ahead of the midterms. I find it deeply alarming. State Senator Nathan Johnson is pushing to toughen up existing laws. It's pretty weak, in fact, and it's easy to get around. Texas was the first state in the country to ban deep fakes and campaign ads back in 2019, but only for state races. John Cornyn and Jasmine Crockett. That means there's nothing to stop Ken Paxton. When the attorney general is focused on himself. And John Cornyn from pummeling each other with AI content. And that is exactly what has happened and what will continue to happen. Isn't that interesting that you made a law, but it's only pertinent for state campaigns? I guess you can't control the state level what they do on a federal level. I'd like to think you could. But it's like everything else in life, right? You have to do your own research and figure out what is legit and what is not legit. All right, listen, y'all have a great weekend. Happy Good Friday. Hope you have a terrific Easter this weekend. Get a little time with family and friends. We will see you Monday morning, bright and early 5 a.m. Hope to see you this afternoon at 4 on AM 950 KPRC.
