There's new video of the kidnapper, they say, responsible for the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, Savannah Guthrie's mother for the Today Show. And it's... It's interesting to see. There's a lot you can gleam for the video. We're going to be breaking some of this down coming up in a little bit, but the video appears to be someone who's probably not a professional. I think he could make that assumption. In a ski mask, a jacket, gloves, backpack, long pants, and some sort of a pistol strapped to the front of their person. How they got to video is even more interesting. They worked with Google over the last several days to try to restore some data that had leftover cached images and video there at the server. She doesn't pay for the service to have the video preserved, so that's why it took them so long to get to. It's one thing that kind of make you wonder, why not? Why have the doorbell without paying? I don't know. Maybe, maybe. Maybe it got cut off or who knows what the story is. But they've actually talked to someone, a person of interest. I'll give you that information. That story coming up in just a little bit first. It is Gretchen Whitmer's wacky world of job losses. 36,000 here in Michigan over the last year. No more. And at a time when other Great Lake states are adding jobs right now. It's a real sad scenario. She's going to come out today and apparently tell folks that she wants to add taxes and do a couple of things that are like revamped rehash Republican ideas that she wants to sort of take credit for. Not to enough really to help with property taxes, but she'll make that a big announcement apparently later on today.

And we'll find out exactly how that that'll pan out as folks are gearing up to hear from her. In Lansing, I'm sure that, well, everybody will be talking. A grand jury won't indict him. Well, this is no surprise. When folks say to me they want arrests, when they say it's been a while, I don't want to see the arrests. So when are the arrests coming? What the arrests? They've been X amount of time and no arrests. You've got to wonder what it takes to get an arrest. And if you can't get a jury, used to be able to say, we could get a jury to indict a ham sandwich. Not in D.C. Not with some of these big federal cases. Apparently, especially not with Democrats. Boy, they're not going to indict anything. or anyone. Once they get in, then the crooked judges throw it out. So the question then about how do you get your arrest, how do you really make sure in the find out era that accountability is happening? That's a good question. We'll dig deeper into this story and more as we bring it today's big three. And of course, moving right along, your chance to join the program. Breaking news in this morning as well into the newsroom, the U.S. adding 130,000 jobs in January. Positive sign that was offset by deep downward revisions to 2025, unemployment numbers, rather. The folks at CNBC also. reporting in the markets, futures are up. There is a strange, as strange as his story is about Savannah Guthrie, there's something that's even stranger happening right now. And I don't know if they got to this, they covered this during the morning show or not. Did you guys talk about this no-flight thing in El Paso? Oh my goodness. All right. Well, I got to talk about it. Then and then we'll talk more about Savannah Guthrie in just a little bit. It's been lifted. There was an order halting El Paso airport flight for 10 days. And lots of people, the mystery around this, which I looked at this thing, I was scratching my head. What is this all about? What could it possibly? If you're a pilot or you work in this industry, maybe you have, you could shine some light on it. But I'll tell you what the latest report on this says. And it came out, like I said, I was looking at this. It's about last night this morning. I don't remember when I saw the strides, kind of like I said, scratching my head. But the FAA had grounded all flights in and out of El Paso International Airport in Texas. By the way, El Paso right there on the border of Mexico. It wasn't just the fact that they grounded the flights, but they grounded them for 10 days.

citing special security instructions. I believe this was called a no-tam. You've heard these before when they've got no flood against incidents where they don't want you to fly for whatever reason in that area. There's an accident or there's something that took place or there's some sort of issue. That's not abnormal. The report here at CNBC goes on to say the temporary closure of airspace over El Paso has been lifted. So as a mystery, we don't know why. And at this point, what we do know is that it's no longer in effect. So we don't know, we don't know why. But up until this report, we don't know why, even other than to say it was a special instruction and security issues, etc. Now, the FAA didn't immediately say what the security reasons were for the temporary sudden halt. The airport sits next to Andy Biggs Army Airfield and is near the Mexican border. Maybe those things are relevant. Maybe they're not. But about 12 miles from Juarez is where this is. A friend who used to live down there, grew up. He used to go to Juarez. And he said, every time you come out of war, Juarez or coming into Juarez, he had the kids out there were trying to sell you the little gum, little chicklets and things like that. Oh, he talked about, Juarez. Love that area. Now, I'm not sure what it's like now, and I don't know if it's someplace that really want to go visit, but the Pentagon referring about the question of the nature of the security issue to the FAA. So they say, we're not involved here. You're going to talk to the FAA. Flights initially halted until February 20th. The ban applied to a 10 nautical mile area around the airport. While the FAA regularly halts flights at airports for weather and traffic, a security reason, highly unusual as a reason to close. Now, Texas Democrat Veronica, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar, whose direct district includes much of El Paso said the move to suddenly close airspace was unprecedented and said that what my office and I have been able to gather overnight. And early this morning, there is no immediate threat to the community or surrounding areas. One of the problems here when you talk about a story like this and they don't give you any actual reason for why they're doing it. Is then you start getting people guessing because we don't know. So, well, I wonder if there's a terrorist or maybe it's a cartel connect. Maybe there's some sort of threat. Who knows what it is? But it could just be something, a piece of equipment or a malfunction of something. And they say, look, we've got to tell we can get this back up and running. Or I'll take you another step. Speaking of a piece of equipment malfunction, who knows, maybe there was some sort of hacking of something. I don't know. Again, all we can do is conjecture here in this situation. And the reason I bring it up, because it is one of those deep mysteries. And again, it's one of these stores. And you're going to say probably to yourself, have you, but I said, what is the point? Who cares? What does this matter? Well, it doesn't necessarily matter to many of us. It's not going to affect your air travel. But to folks in that area, I think it's concerning. And I think also if you consider.

The climate and the rest, now I'm not talking about Al Gore climate, but just the rest of the way things are these days with the constant threats and everything else. You can imagine this would be something that would occupy folks. and their considerations and concerns. So anyway, they are back, again, just to say, and make sure I hit that they are back open. They have lifted. The FAA has lifted the order halting El Paso airport flights for 10 days. So they are back open. And that is a strange way to put it. But that order is lifted and no more issues. no more should be should everything should be up and running fine so that's that's the latest we'll make sure we keep you posted and updated and I want to dig into the video from the the Guthrie situation as well coming up we'll make sure that we we get you all of that and and more so don't go anywhere folks we just getting things started today and you can join the program anytime like I said earlier Just jump on at 616-774-24-24. Coming up, the city of Grand Rapids is looking for a new police chief. And the reason why is, well, the old one is going, Winston, going to Florida. What precipitated that? And what happens next in a city that... Boy, I think these types of things really matter more than ever. You've got massive infrastructure construction happening right now, investment in this city. In a soccer stadium, you've got the big amphitheater. They've got all the events that happen. In fact, we took the kids to one this weekend down here. People got to be safe. They've got to feel safe, not just be safe, but feel safe in this city. One of the things a lot of folks are bringing up right now is a number of police officers on staff. You're going to have to add anyway as we look at all this expansion. So we'll talk about that coming up with our good friend Johnny Brand on the way, voice of the batch. Breaking down the story. This, despite $1 billion already spent, but having terrible results, Michigan, unfortunately, ranking in the bottom 10. Michigan Congressman Republican John James saying a federal investigation is underway into Jocelyn Benson's election oversight, James saying until Michiganers can trust their elections, they will not trust their leaders. And a Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers presenting a plan to make home ownership more affordable for Michigan families. They've interviewed somebody, which I think is kind of interesting. You see the guy, if you're watching the behind-the-scenes live stream right now, Justin Barkley.com, Facebook, YouTube, X, lots of different places to watch. You see this individual. I'm assuming a man, there's, to me, I could see on still frames and slowed down, looks to be wearing rubber gloves, like latex maybe. And I could see what I thought was a mustache underneath the mask. Now, people are wondering whether or not this is a man or a woman. This picks up a weed at some point, puts it in front of the camera, tries to hide the image. May have a light in the mouth. Can't really tell there's something shining or glowing in the mouth. Trying to cover up that camera, we could see. Maybe it's the ring doorbell.

Again, this looks like a man to me. And the way the pace that they move looks like an older man. That's just me, my first gut take on it, don't really know too much. They did talk with a suspect, a person of interest. They questioned a man named Carlos, who they thought may have been involved in this situation. But apparently Carlos... was let go and determined was not the person they were looking for. Here's a little bit from the report, NBC News. Reporting has been leading this investigation along with the FBI says they have detained a subject. In connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation, the statement is as follows. Earlier today, Pima County Sheriff's Department deputies detained a subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson. The subject is currently being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie information, additional investigation, rather, additional information will be released as it becomes available. Again, the Pima County Sheriff's Office, which obviously... Like I said, they let that person go. Apparently they realized this is not our guy. So for whatever reason. And I don't know if it was a tip. Honestly, this case is so weird. It's so strange. The whole thing, everybody talked to. I think it's said the same. There's a lot that just doesn't add up with this. And again, she's been missing for 10 days and doesn't have her medication and all the other things. And she's an older woman. She's in her 80s. And needs has some real specific health needs. And so the concern is maybe they're getting. jumpy on some of this, but I would say with the video, with the things that they've got that they've put out now that we've seen, I think we're getting closer to getting someone that's been identified. There is from Rio Rico, Arizona, where a home is being searched in connection to the Nancy Guthrie case. We know one person has been detained for questioning near there, and now this is a court-ordered search that is underway. And just moments ago, our team on the ground heard from a woman who claims her home is the one being searched there. Oh, no, they came out telling us that they had somebody gave a tip that the lady was in my house. I don't know her name. This was the, apparently the mother-in-law of the guy Carlos, who was... That we don't know? We don't know it at all. So they let him go. There's more from this, but I don't know that I need to spend a lot of time when I just tell you they continue with that search. And gosh, you can just imagine prayers going out to the families. They try and get down on the bottom of all this, but not much we can do other than give you the latest headlines as they come. Next, we talk with our good friend Johnny Brand.

More than just great food of brands, right? But you also know that he's behind the voice for the badge that organization advocates on behalf of, you know, police and community relations. And he is highly involved in making sure that the Grand Rapids area gets what it needs and has folks advocating for that police department and the connection between those cops in the community. So they got to pick a new, a new, brand new police chief after Winstrom has decided to move on to Florida and Pensacola. And he'll talk about what happened and what should happen next. Johnny Brand, join us on the other side of the bottom of the hour news. Back after it, it is West Michigan Live. The Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom has been named the chief. incoming there in Pensacola, Florida, spoke about his time there in Grand Rapids, albeit brief, did get some good things done. So it's very emotional for me. I'll tell you, we have the best city in the country. We have the best police department in the country. I have made lifelong friends with the men and women in uniform standing behind you. This decision came down to what is best for my family. I know we just met with the leadership team and talking about how far this police department has come, this city has come, and I mean it, Grand Rapids Police Department, the most professional. I know yesterday Michigan Association Chiefs of Police were in town for a yearly convention. And Captain Siver, our training captain, was there giving a big presentation and how we train our officers? They've been in the spotlight over the last year or so. You see the trial with Officer Christopher Scher. He's been drugged through the mud and came out, I think, as well as he could. And you've also seen other issues have been brought up largely. And he talked about this at one point. largely because of like the politics unfortunately folks that are critical of the police department uh folks very much so on the left this defund the police type movement um and what did that what did that mean well here here he was mentioned that in in one of the questions that reporters asked some elected officials you know criticized us what's you know you can't put out this docu series because it's making you look good So when you politicize policing, that's a recipe for failure. Now, what he's talking about is the docu series that he did on television that highlighted the Grand Rapids Police Department. And yeah, you know what I find? When they do put cameras on these guys, they do look great. And that's why during the sort of defunded police movement a few years back, they took that live PD show off. Because they see, the public sees how great these guys are, what they do at the end of the day, and of course, who they have to interact with.

And they ultimately come up with so much more respect for their job. Joining us now is an advocate, obviously, for the work that these guys do, but connecting the cops with the community. That's what Voice for the Badge is all about. Johnny Brand is with us right now, and we appreciate it. Johnny Taken. You have been a staunch supporter of these guys, but not just the police department, but making sure there's good connection between everybody for years. Yes, good morning, Justin. Yeah, I was listening to the clips of the chief. Chief Western was an elite police chief. He was, he truly was. We were lucky to have him. I don't like to see him leaving. There's still a lot of work to be done. But he did a lot of great things for our city. No question about it. It took us in the right direction. Public safety. as well as relations within the community. He's been great at that. But it's time trying to move on. I will say that politics and policing have public safety. The wards don't mix. There's nothing political about it at all, and those that make it that. It's unjust, and it's public safety is number one. I mean, I take Grand Rapids as an example right now. We had 260-some officers back in the, actually during the tragedy there of the officer shooting. And that is so short of offshoot, Justin. We had a half of squad cars on the streets. Now we're up to 312. That's the mandate, which isn't the amount we need more than that. They say we're fully staffed. We're not fully staffed. That's just to the mandate, and the mandate's low. Our city manager is a director of public safety. He assured me he was, and he says he wants to have one of his safest cities in the country. If not these days, a city, then you need more police officers, sir. It's not going to happen without having the right amount of personnel out on the streets for us, protecting our lives every day. It's just not going to happen. I wish, Keith Winston well. And, but I will say this, and emphatically, that the next chief in Grand Rapids should be Deputy Chief Joe Trigg, who was the interim chief as of now. They do a new national search for a new chief, which I guess is kind of protocol. I don't think is needed now. I think Joe Trigg is the obvious. obvious choice to lead us. He worked with Winstrum. They worked together with Deputy Chief Maycroft and did some great things. And Joe Trigg will just continue that on greater. It will be a greater police force than we are today with Joe Trigg in this position permanently as chief. So. I feel strongly about that. I just hope that our city manager and the powers would be, be it in front of them. It's great to promote for more than. Well, it's perfect to promote when you've got a qualified candidate that will take a police force that it's on the positive directions of morale, everything our Chief Winston has done, and that Joe Trigg will continue on and build on it.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of great things about Trigg. And as you mentioned, that's, you know, there's a guy who has been on the, he's been a part of the organization, what Winstrom's been able to build. And maybe add to it with his experience. He's got the connections in the community already. This is a guy who I think we should be looking strongly at, as you mentioned. You know, I understand, do your due diligence, go take a look around the country and see what's out there. But this is a very important position, and you've got to make sure you get it right. Because right now, as I see it, Johnny, and I don't know why, but there appears to be a revolving door in this position to the Grand Rapids Police Department in the city. And that's just something we can't afford. We've got too much investment. The city is moving in such a great direction as far as some of these projects that are going in, people that are coming, maybe looking to come here from all over, different parts of the state and beyond. And, you know, it's one thing to have this investment. But if people don't feel safe, I mean, it's got to be safe, right? But if they don't feel safe... then they're not going to come down. And I'm telling you somebody that doesn't live in the city, but I come work here every day. And I also come bring my family down. We came down on Sunday, went Disney on ice, and the police presence there was good. But when you got all these different events going on, you just mentioned the number of officers. That number of officers and the mandate, I don't know what it's tied to, but it needs to jump because they need to see police on the streets. Not only do they need to see them and know that they're there, they're protected, but those cops need to be having, you know, conversations and interacting with people. Well, I tell you, it made my daughters feel good when they waved and said hi and thank you to the police officer who was directing traffic so we could get into the arena. That was great. And that's what goes a long way. It does. It absolutely does. I mean, you know, we talk about additional officers of the protection of our citizens and it's needed. I mean, it serves as a deterrent. I mean, the police out-patrolling, the presence in itself can deter a crime that will never know what happened because it didn't happen because there were the police presence in the area. And so I also look at another way that... Actually, we need more police for citizens. Well, we need more police for the police because they're protected more with more police on the road to aid each other. I'm a firm believer in two in a vehicle, two police officers in a vehicle at all times. I don't see that happening anytime soon, but that's where it should be to me. I just think when you look at the city budget. and you put it together for what's going to be best for our city and Spencer's as well. Public safety has got to be number one on it. Everything below that won't be a positive unless you have public safety. And I think the chief made a quote that I can't quote exact, but it was something along the lines of, and I really agreed with it. He said, show me a city that is pro-policing, and I'll show you a prosperous city. And that goes right back to city officials.

that support police, that understand the importance of them, to value them, and that acts accordingly as far as financing the department as far as the budget so that they can hire enough officers, then it's going to make our city better. And what people really need to know in Grand Rapids is that that's what this is all about. We need enough police officers. But we had a great chief that did great work for us. And I'm going to miss him. I was disappointed when I heard that he was leaving. But as I thought more about it, and I do know Deputy Trigg, at least through the profession. And he's a quality man. He's got all the characteristics needed. I mean, every single one of them. He's been an officer in granted for 25 years. He loves the city. He's got a special affection for the city because his close friend and partner in the road, Bobby Kosminski, who was murdered by a thug back in, I don't remember the exact year. That's something that I know has always weighed on Deputy Chief Trigg because they're very close. And I think part of his... Legacy, if Joe becomes the chief, he wants to honor Caz and be in Grand Rapids, and I really believe firmly that he would, this is my opinion, he would retire here as the chief. That's what we need. I think Winston did a great job, but the job wasn't done, but we're fortunate that we have somebody that can take the job. Parts of it were being done, great was Winstrom, and he'll just... carry on with that and build it more. Like, he's the man for the job, and I just, it's just frustrating because the national search, yes, I get this protocol. Okay, well, do that. Spend a couple of grand approximately what it costs. But you're going to end up way back with Chief Trigg. That's what people want as Chief and Gunner. The rank and file, the officers want him. I mean, it's out there. It's so plain and clear. And I'm not saying that as a city manager, who is the ultimate decision maker in this, doesn't agree with that. I don't know. I've had conversations with whom I never know exactly where we end up with the conversations for some reason. But all I know is I'm a huge support of the Grandf was police. They protect their lives. They're courageous. They take a bad rap, and it's not as bad now. It's better. But all they do is go out and protect their lives. And I don't know of anything that's more important to anybody, even though people that don't like the police, I'm getting tired of that.

What are they going to do when they have an emergency, a loved one that's in life's in jeopardy? What are they going to do? They're going to call the police. Then you value them. Then when they hopefully save the lives, the lives of a child, or whoever it is, they will, then I suppose we'll hate them again. But I have to love the ground of the police. I believe law enforcement is so critical in this day and age, and the Grand Rapids has got to stay up with the time. We've got too much going on in the city that are positive with growth. And none of that growth is going to... It's a matter of people come into the city and have bad experiences of safety in the new venues we have. Mike Lee talking about the Save Act this this morning. And what needs to be done, John Thune. Now, there's some back and forth, whether you get built a filibuster or not. And this is what, this is what Lee said. Progressive America Act, I just wanted to give you a nightly update since things are moving fast. Most recently, I just got a phone with my friend and colleague, the House lead sponsor, my partner in this endeavor on the House representative side, Congressman Chip Roy. Chip confirmed that... the Save America Act rule, which is a procedural step in the House of Representatives at the move, first out of Rules Committee and then onto the floor, that it passed out of committee tonight. They will move forward tomorrow with the rule to set up the vote on the Save America Act for the floor, and then sometime either tomorrow or Thursday, they will pass the Save America Act on the House floor. Send it over to the Senate as a message. That's update number one. Update number two. I want to think... My friend and colleague, Senator Shelley Moore Capito, is the Republican Policy Committee chair in the Senate who runs the Tuesday lunch for Republican senators. She gave me a lot of time today at our Senate Republican policy lunch to make a presentation about the Save America Act, its contents, what it does, and how we might go about moving it forward procedurally. And that gave me the opportunity to speak, among other things about... the talking filibuster and how it would work. I outlined for the Senate Republican conference the origin of the two-speech rule on which we'd be relying. It was adopted by the United States Senate on April 16th of 1787, so right when the Senate came into existence, the cloture rule didn't come into existence until 1917, walked them through the whole history of it, and how the two-speech rule has at times been interpreted in the past. Now, if you want to get into all the wonkiness of all of this, and by the way, we should understand this. This is basic civics, by the way. You really, you want to go check this out. But one of the issues I think that we're dealing with right now is people don't understand how a lot of these, a lot of just, just system, the whole thing works. And I don't mean even like the.

There's plenty of the dysfunctional parts of it. I don't mean even that. I just mean like how things get through. I mean, beyond the sort of, you know, how a bill becomes a bill, et cetera, schoolhouse rock style. I just think it is. It's something that, unfortunately, people don't remember or weren't even ever taught. And I wonder why that could be, huh? Yeah. A lot's coming up in the after show, the show, after the show. We're going to get to that. We'll talk about Save America Act and more. But, you know, it boils down to this. Simple. You know, you've got to have an ID to do like everything. Why not vote, right?
