Cape Coral Code Violations, Government Shutdown, and Halloween | Guest: Jennifer Nelson-Lastra

This is Daybreak with Jason Jay Jones on 925 Fox News. Here we go again. More news. Cape Coral. What is going on with you, Cape Coral? So Cape Coral plans to install some signs at properties with ongoing code violation. So when you get a code violation, they'll show up at your property. They'll put a code, a sign in your... yard, and then that sign in your yard will say, this house has a code violation. And there's a little window in the sign. I wonder if the sign is to list what the code violation is so they can really super shame you, right? And at the same time, they are putting, I think, I believe a raise upon your ballot for the Cape Coral City Council that you'll get to vote on. They're... discussing the widening of burnt store, the old golf course. So many things are going on right now. It is a very fast moving, fast moving city. And last night, while I was sitting there knowing about all these stories, I saw Jennifer Nelson, Laster, the vice mayor and city councilwoman. And I said, hey, you got time to come on the show tomorrow and discuss these things? And she's like, no doubt I'll be there. So first and foremost, Jennifer, good morning. And thank you so much for supporting Tony last night. It really means a lot. He's a great friend. And I really appreciate that. Oh, my gosh. Just hearing him speak was so inspiring. I'm so proud. Right. He is. He's good at it, and he speaks well. Let's get into it. Let's talk first. Let's talk different topics. Let's talk to it. We're on the air right now with Jennifer Nelson, Lastera from the Cape Coral City Council. So there's these new signs. I think I saw them. There are yellow signs that they put in someone's yard. It looks like it's got a little window that they put something in like a copy of the violation probably. And if you get a code violation, they're going to put one of these signs in your yard so all the neighbors know that you should be shamed. As a matter of fact, if I had that clip right now, I would play it so that every time they went and put a sign in the yard, they should have this little, they should play that. Shame. Shame. Oh, there it is. Shame. All right, there it is. Thank you. I appreciate it. There it is. What do you think about these signs and what do you think about the residents think about these signs? Well, it's funny you say the residents because honestly, the reason these signs came about was because of the residents. The amount of individuals that we have that are, that continually complain about repeat offenders, for example, yards that haven't been mowed in months or, you know, trailers on the side of their house and we've, we've gone out, code enforcement's done it, they put a lien on the property. Sometimes these properties are abandoned. Sometimes they're in foreclosure. And so we get, I'm not even kidding, Jason. I'm going to say I get at least five to six emails weekly about repeat offenders from different residents who aren't aware that there is a code case on it. And so the thought process behind it was to be more transparent and to give the residents what they were asking for, which is, well, we can't see the red tag in the door or the window.

And so we're going to keep calling until you tell us, right? And so code enforcement decided that this will provide a more transparent and visible, you know, way to notify the public that there are unresolved code violations. And, you know, this is after, of course, we do the warnings. But this is something that the residents asked for. All right. I was curious what you believe the residents would believe on that. Now, some people will say that's my property. You don't have a right to put a sign in my yard. Well, and I understand that, but we're already putting signs up in the windows and the doors, red tags. Believe me, I know I got one earlier this year. You got a code violation as a councilwoman? I did. I probably shouldn't say that. I did. Not my fault. This is before Jen. Before I married Francisco, I moved into his house. And we had, are you kidding? We had a brand new roof put on finally from Ian, you know, two years afterwards back. And he was sadly taken advantage by an unlicensed contractor who came by his house. When everything was, all the power was gone, and, you know, this happens. You hear about it all the time. Every day. And my poor husband was prey to this. This man comes by. Hey, you know, I see that your Lanai is down in the back. You know, what I want to come and bid it and look at it. Well, my husband, you know, he works for publics. He works 52 hours a week. He, the last thing, and he worked out on Boekelia. So he was going out there by boat. So the guy shows up, you know, gives him his card, has a contracting number on it. And long story short, my husband hires him, does the work. Well, of course, the guy never pulled a permit. And I said to my husband, well, didn't you see the permit and the win? Now, this is before me, before he met me. I was leaving on council. So, yes. And this is to help. This is to really, this is something residents asked for because they're constantly calling and they're constantly concerned about code violations. I'm not kidding. I get many emails a week on this subject. Let's go into real quick. We got more time. Let's talk about the story I see that where you are going to allow voters decide on a council and mayor raise. Yes, so that's something that our charter review committee brought to us. That was one of the recommendations. And if you watch the council the whole meeting yesterday, you will see that we were, we all went down the line and voted, you know, what do we, what do we want to see to bring back to us to potentially put on a referendum? And we all had to give our quote unquote hard nose. My hard know was a salary increase, my reasoning, because now isn't the time. We just increased the. the fire service assessment. And even though we did the rollback rate, we lowered the millage rate, you know, we still have residents who are struggling. This is not the time. I just, I mean, I just don't think for me personally, I'm not going to support it going on referendum. Like, we can talk about this. Who else? Did anybody support it in the meeting?

Yeah, I think everybody else wants to see it on, except for Lehman. I think she was one who said, no, she didn't want it on there either. But the majority, I think it was five, three. And I think three of us said no. And five said, put it on the, you know, put it on. Let's talk about it and let the voters decide. I mean, I just don't think it's going to pass because it's not the right time. Right. So, and the numbers. So one of the things that. You know, everybody asked for always as the data. We want to see the data. We don't need a survey. We don't need to pay for a study and a study and a study and a consultant and whatever. We can get those numbers on our own, which the mayor did. During the meeting, he reached out to Florida League cities. They were able to send over a survey that they had done two years ago with with everybody who participated. I mean, we've got pretty much all the municipalities from around the state. to put what their mayor main and what their city council. And you guys are under that number? We are. Probably grossly under that number. We are. And I'm not saying that council doesn't deserve an increase because it is more than a full-time job a lot of weeks. However, I just don't think now is the right time. How many hours did you work this week for city council? What's today? Thursday? Yeah, Thursday. It's already Thursday. You're doing, and you're working right now because you're on the air with me. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, I was answering emails. So I would say so far this week, I've put in about. 30, maybe 31, 32, because I start on Sundays. That's when I start really studying for the meeting. So by the end of this week, you're over 40 hours. You're getting part-time pay. I think the residents are misled. I think you shouldn't feel ashamed or Lori shouldn't feel ashamed to know that you deserve more money. But I understand you believe it's the wrong time. But I also believe I see this push from different groups and from some residents that are upset. Now, for granted, you know, in full transparency. I wasn't for the movement to just give yourself a raise, but to put it on the ballot and give them a chance to vote for it, I think that's a great idea. Go ahead. And maybe everybody in the city will vote to give you guys a race, which I personally believe is due to the amount of work you do. I mean, we could sit here for an hour and a half just talking about the stories about Cape Coral. that are in the news every day. Birch store widening, the old golf course plans. These are all things, and we don't have time to cover during this segment, but these are all things that we could talk. So I wanted to take a moment to tell you that I believe that if I was a Cape Coral resident, I would vote for you to get a raise. Well, and I appreciate that, and I feel there's a lot of residents who do. But again, I just think with the UEP coming and we were asking residents to pay $35,000, we just increased the floor, you know, the fire service assessment, I just don't know if now's the right time. And I don't know that it would pass. I'd rather pause, wait till we're stronger and then put it on. That would be my preference, but.

I'm only one of eight. Right, only one of eight. And I have to tell you, Jennifer, it's been a pleasure watching you grow as a Republican and standing out there doing your thing and learning your way, man. It's been really fun being watching it happen right before my very eyes. And the fact that you always stand up for the better of the community and the better of the residents, I think that's awesome. You've continually do that, and you're always there, and you're always trying to mend fences and make sure that everyone gets along, and I think that's awesome. I've watched her go from. where she leaned very far left as a dem, and then she switched her party, and now is 100% leaning on the conservative values of life. Welcome back to daybreak here on 92.5 Fox News, right all along. Now, Jimmy Bertronis predicts that the shutdown that we have right now will last all the way through midterms. And that's crazy. That is crazy to think that that would actually happen. Now, CFO, Jimmy Bertrona's forecasted shutdown extends at least through the midterms, blaming Democrats for refusing a clean resolution without handouts for illegals. They're willing to let the government stay shut down. And he believes that they'll do this just to just to. Win the election? That won't work. Let me tell you why it won't work.

So you turn on the television. And by the way, you'll hear it. You'll hear it. You'll hear it. It's the Republican shutdown. No, it's the Democrat. It's the Chuck Schumer shutdown. And I call it the shutdown showdown because it's a battle of who can point out who it is. Now, we need 60 to get it done. And every Republican is voting for. the clean resolution, along with what I believe to be only two, maybe three Democrats. But we need six, right? We need 10. Six or 10? We need 10. How many do we need? How many more do we need? Rob, do you know the answer to that? How many more do we need? Less than eight, right? Yes. That's what I needed to know. Less than eight. I'll tell you why. Because there's a group of Senate Republicans citing with Democrats to advance a resolution blocking President Trump's emergency tariffs on Canadian goods. And when you hear this, and I'm going to give you a list, Susan Collins from Maine, Rand Paul. The Democratic from Kentucky. That guy doesn't actually act like a Republican very often. Mike Lee from Utah. Jerry Moran from Kansas. I mean, it goes on. Mitt Romney, Mike rounds, Todd Young. There's just Lisa Murkowski, at Lisa Murkowski from Alaska. But this is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Republicans that have sided with the Democrats to stop the Canadian tariff situation. They crossed the party line. There's no reason that you could not use this same example to prove to every Democrat that we do it. How is this our shutdown? We do it. In the middle of everything that's going on, we could have been like, no, we're cool with the terrorists, leave them. We don't care what you guys think. We're not changing anything. We're going to stick with everything he does, no matter if we agree with it or not, all because we're doing this like you're doing it. But Republicans aren't doing it the way the Democrats are doing it. You hear Hakeem Jeffries every day try to say. And here's the thing. He's over there spinning money. He's over in Asia. And he's worried about he's talking to everybody in the world except to the Americans or to the Democrats to get a clean resolution. I wouldn't want to talk to Chuck Schumer or Hakeem Jeffries either because you're not making the calls in your party anymore at all. And he needs to have a conversation with people like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. because she's pulling the strings everywhere. And I don't know how that happened, but it has. But I wish, and I'll bring this up to Byron Donalds's in about an half hour and we have Byron Donalds's on for our Thursday morning conversation. If we have these eight Republicans that have crossed party lines, all for the blocking of the emergency tariffs on Canadian goods, Which I don't really understand why we're so upset about the actual Canadian goods. But when it comes to these eight, they've jumped the party lines. Now, we can talk individually about the ones of these that are, I mean, diehard rhinos. But I don't want to talk about that. They're elected Republicans that are crossing the line. We should be able to at least find some moderators.

or some moderate or some very far right-leaning Democrats that'll jump on board with us. But that's what it needs. It needs somebody like John Fetterman who puts country before party. I got Mark from Ave Maria on the phone with us right now. Good morning. What's your message? Go ahead. You're on 92-5 Fox News, Mark. Go ahead. Good morning. Republicans are so poor at messaging. All they have to do is say every time they go up there is that every single Republican is voting to open the government and the only people who are voting know are Democrats. So tell me who is actually keeping the government close. And the message. That's simple. They don't have to say anything else but that. Right. But then the Democrats respond, well, they're not agreeing to our resolution, only their own resolution. It doesn't matter. All of this resolution is to keep the business open for the next till the CR gets, you know, whenever the CR ends. And that's it. That's what the, that's all they need to do. They don't need to bring you in any kind of health care or any of that kind of stuff. It's just, hey, you know, we'll do the business. when business is open, when the business doors are open, and right now the business doors aren't open, and we're voting to open it, and you guys are saying no. And so you tell me who the shutdown is. I love that. That's the message right there, Mark. You're right. Hey, look, we're ready to come to work and get this done and get to work done, and you're not. I just saw this article and I was like, ooh, this is perfect. Let's get into this real quick. Let's talk. Halloween is happening tomorrow. It's such a big deal that Friday night football at every high school and every high school in Southwest Florida has been moved to tonight. Friday night football is now Thursday night football all around here. They're like, no one's going to come to the games if we do it on Halloween night. No one's coming to the game. The kids won't even come. It'll be hard to get players to the game. Do high schoolers still trick-or-treat? At what age do you stop trick-or-treating? Now, I want to say it. I want to talk about Halloween and trick-or-treating with my kid. And if anybody in the world has a problem with that, let me just say that President Trump and First Lady Melania. are transforming the South Drive into, well, an amazing Halloween Wonderland, if you will. That's right. The festivities kick off today at 5.30 with trick-or-treating with local military families and school kids. The president expected to hand out candy in costume, by the way, and in the past, he's done into Super Trump. Melania is going to focus on inclusive themes and emphasizing her faith in community spirit for all ages, but the first responders and veterans are all invited to bring their family and come on out and do some trick-or-treating at the White House. Now, this started in 1958 and got boosted in 2017. It had over 6,000 guests and then immediately got stifled by Biden. But Trump's back and he's bringing it back. And... I want you to have a great time. Go out. Where are you going, trick-or-treating? Where's your spot? Where's the biggest spot in southwest Florida to go get your trick-or-treating? Now, let me just tell you how big it is at my house. All right? I just want to tell you a little bit about how we do it. We used to pick up and take a truck and a trailer and go out to off a river road, way out and East, East Lee, way out, maybe out past either, maybe Henry County. And you get out there and they have all these massive big ass houses and everybody gives out king-sized candy bars. I'm not sure how my wife was able to locate that place, but we got out there a few years. And this year, we're bringing it back to Norfolk Myers. Here's a nice spot of Norfolk Myers off of Orange Grove. We'll go with all the kids. But my wife gets serious. Let me tell you how serious she gets. She is decorated our golf cart to the next level. To the next level. There's Halloween lights. There's all kinds of Halloween flare and there's eyes and there's glows. And it's just crazy, right? It's all ready to go.

So they're going to go out and hit the neighborhood. Not only that, but my wife, for an entire week, has been building one piece of my kid's Power Ranger costume. Ben's decided he wants to be the Green Ranger, so Sarah's making it look at about as real as possible. And as my wife's doing it, I'm like, maybe you should do this for a living and get into making mascots, right? It's... what we like to do and have a good time doing it with our family. And please, everybody, go do the same thing? Where do you go? Do you go trick-or-treating? Do you guys just go in your neighborhood? Rob, do you got a big neighborhood that you go to? No, our neighborhood is very much not into Halloween. So we actually go to a neighborhood that's kind of out towards a mockle. That's really cool. Has a lot of young families. Right. You got to find it where you can get at the most bang for your buck so you do less walking. You know, when I was a kid, there was, you know, I grew up in a town where there was no space between the houses, right? There was like four feet between the houses. So you could walk down a street and hit 30 houses per street and everybody participated in it. We are the only kids. Our end of the street are the only kids on our block. So we usually leave the block. But I'm hoping that more families move in. And one day, that block will be just amazing for trick-or-treating in Halloween. I love that they do this event at the White House with Trump and Melania, and they get out there and let these veterans kids get out there and participate in the... festivities along with the president. I wonder what he'll dress up as. Do you dress up with your kid? You said you do, right? Yeah, you guys. Oh, yeah. Yeah, Sarah is the pink ranger. So my wife's the pink ranger. My son is the green ranger. He's got a buddy, I think, is coming to be the Blue Ranger. And what's Jason Jay Jones? I'm working. I worked last night, tonight, tomorrow night. Saturday, Saturday night all weekend. Like it's legitimately a massive work weekend. It always is when it comes to holidays for me and my event company. Yeah, we have a fun family like theme. We like to theme all of our costumes together. Now, I won't lie. I always charge an astronomical amount of money for holidays. I really do, Rob. But they still call. I know. And they still book me. And I'm like, really? Wow. Come on. Now there's some people, and I want to give out. I want you to call in and give it away. A lot of people don't want to give away their neighborhoods. Like one time I went on the radio and I talked about Moody Estates at North Fort Myers and boy, they got bombarded. Bombarded. My kid got BMW keys there once. Right? Somebody left their BMW keys in their bowl and we got home and poured out my kid's bag and he had a set of BMW keys in his bag. I was like, do we get the car? So we went back to the house and we're like, hey, we need our car that we got. We got these in the bag. We're looking for our car. All right, let's talk. Nick's on the phone. Nick, good morning from Ford Myers. Where's your trick-or-treat spot, Nick? So, you know, I'm a 90s kid. So I remember when, you know, it was the entirety of the neighborhood where you'd have hundreds of kids. But it's still okay. Down in San Carlos Park, Three Oaks Park, man, you go down there right by the middle school and stuff like that. Hundreds.

Hundreds of kids come out. You know, it's a good time. Everyone participates. The houses are massively decorated, and you can just walk it. You can just find a place to park and go. Nick, I don't know how old you are, but I'm going to guess when I say this. Did you use a pillowcase to collect your candy? Oh, 100%. And it would be so heavy you could knock someone out with it. Right. And then people would run around and cut your bag or try to steal your bag. There was always one of those little bully kids that would run around and try to steal your bag. And you'd have to protect your bag with your life. Like it was everything. And then when it got too heavy, you had to drag it home and then grab another bag and see if you had enough time to get back out. Yep. And it's Florida. So, of course, it's always hot. So, you know, we're dying the whole time. But yet somehow, you know, we survive and we would have more candy than we could possibly ever imagine. Right. It's so hot for Halloween here. It's so weird for me. But you're right. You go out Halloween. You're sweating. You always try to figure out a costume that's not going to make you sweat in Florida. Right. All right. I appreciate you, buddy. Thanks for calling in, Dick. It's great to have you. Take me down memory lane right there. It was, it's just something that I was like, wow, that's kind of cool, right? It is. It's, it's fun to talk about and to, uh, think about, right? I have dressed up before, though. I did a clown one time. There's a YouTube video of my transformation into Twisty the Clown from America Horror Story. And that was intense. I've lost so much weight that I can't wear that costume ever again. My wife and I had our first get together at a Halloween party at our house. Like at my house, she came over. We had a big old party at the house. And when we first got together, it was a massive party. And now we've gone full circle and we have pumpkin carving parties. That's when you know you've grown up and you're adulting, if you will. It's always fun. Yesterday, it was Dad's Day as the... I'm just going to tell you a little bit about my life here today on the show. Yesterday it was Dad's Day for me and my wife. My wife took my daughter and her friends to Halloween Har Nights, right, for my daughter's upcoming birthday. And I had to spend the day with Finn. She walks out the door and Finn starts laying down all these demands that he wants, right? And the first thing he must do is go to a hockey store. Well, it's never cheap when we go to the hockey store. It's never cheap. So I had to be like, all right, we'll go to the hockey store. You got a $25 budget. That's it. If you can find something for $25, that's fine. Very hard to do in a hockey store. He goes there and legitimately finds a sure wood stick that's wooden for 25 bucks. And he thought it was the greatest thing ever. So we went all the way down the hockey store, came back. And then we obviously went over to Tony Cory Booker's event last night. And it was just fun to be able to have a little dad and sun time because he's such a modest boy that I just don't get enough time with him. That's just crazy, right?

But that's my conversation. And that's what I, I think, I think you should always go out and have some good time with trick-or-treating. It gives you the greatest memories. I don't think you're ever too old to trick-or-treat. I give anybody that knocks on a door candy bar. But we're not home. So we leave it, so we're not home. But the crazy thing is we have all these decorations. So a few kids will come by. We'll catch them on the ring doorbell. But not a lot of kids come through our neighborhood. That's why we leave our neighborhood to go get it done. I want to give you guys a little information about our next big broadcast that we got coming up.
