Now, the ongoing partial government shutdown, as they call it, of the Department of Homeland Security is roughly more and more feathers, as we just heard. Many TSA employees have quit their jobs. And understandably so, you get to a certain point, but I think we're six weeks into this thing, the longest partial government shutdown in history. And maybe you reach that particular limit where, one, you have a high-stress job where people are ticked off at you.

for no fault of your own because the lines are super long, because you're short staff, this and that. And then you're not getting paid during this time. You'll get your back pay. You're not worried about not getting paid in the end, but you're not getting paid right now. So where are we with this thing? The Senate Majority Leader John Thune... is seemingly frustrated and fed up with this on the Republican side, and quite frankly, I think with good reason for the GOP. Enough is enough. Republicans have bent over backward to negotiate with Democrats. And now Democrats need to get serious about funding the Department of Homeland Security. Mr. President, seems that Democrats have no interest in reaching an agreement. Many of them are perfectly willing to leave the Department of Homeland Security unfunded for the long term. They claim that they want to fund the department. They claim that they're concerned about TSA officers and other working without pay. But Mr. President, talk is cheap. And their actions belie their words. That is the Senate Majority Leader, head of the Republican Caucus in the United States Senate. And his language was backed up yesterday, or was it the night before, by... U.S. Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, who has called for an end to the shutdown. It's just a fundamental, a simple thing, just to acknowledge that this is gone. It should have never happened, but it's gone way too long. We've all witnessed the kinds of chaos in our nation. Do the right thing. Put the country ahead of the party. Now there's a huge rally, you know, another no king's kinds of protests. So now it's also probably motivating some people in my party that they might be afraid to reopen now because they are demanding these kinds of extremes in what they think is the solution, that there was ever going to be a solution. There never had any leverage to force any kinds of changes in ICE or over-controlled funding because of the big, beautiful bill. Put the country ahead of the party, he said yesterday. The Wall Street Journal's editorial entitled Senate Democrats Choose TSA Chaos. And on this score, I think they are right that this is at this point on. the responsibility of or the control of the Democrats in terms of this shutdown and we'll get to why in just a moment. What the Wall Street Journal editorialized yesterday is that, you know, we've had about six weeks past since Democrats decided not to fund the Department of Homeland Security. Some airport security lines have exceeded four and a half hours.

Major airports are experiencing days where 40 to 50% of their staff are calling out, said the acting head of TSA. They simply cannot afford to report to work. Now this week, the Transportation Security Administration, of course, is bracing to miss a second full paycheck, many in our workforce. have missed bill payments, received eviction notices, had their cars repossessed and utilities shut off, Ms. McNeil told the house. Some are sleeping in their cars, selling their blood and plasma. More than 480 TSA employees have quit. And if the shutdown goes longer, TSA, quote, may have to close smaller airports if we do not have enough officers. As the Wall Street Journal editorializes, imagine that conversation in a thousand versions. Sorry, sir, but your flight is canceled. In fact, all the flights are canceled, and the entire airport is going offline. Maybe there are some rental cars left. Hope you don't miss your dad's funeral, like whatever the occasion is. And by the way, just as an aside, we're only talking here about TSA, let alone that the Department of Homeland Security, its primary mission, is to address terrorism threats and also to secure the southern border. And that's where you get to a lot of the crux here. Senator Chuck Schumer and his fellow Democrats chose this, writes the editorial. They have refused to do the basic job of paying the security personnel who are required to show up at airports nationwide to keep the public safe from another 9-11. They're inflicting pain on the flying public as a way to extract a set of concessions on immigration enforcement that lack majority support in either chamber of Congress. Not only that, but Republicans have said, okay, let's separate ICE funding and get the rest of the department funded. Republicans have said, let's do that. And yet Democrats have said no.

The Castle Rock Police Department's dispatch center has received a high volume of calls today about the smoky skies over Castle Rock, this post yesterday from the Castle Rock Police Department. At this time, there are no active fires in our area. The smoke you're seeing is drifting in from wildfires burning in Nebraska. Now, I'm in Douglas County. And Gina, I can see the haze. You're driving around to me. It's pretty clear that it's not a fire in Douglas County that's going on. I would like to think that people could know that a little bit. But then again, we've had our fires that have happened and over the years. And God forbid, something triggers here in Colorado soon with all this dryness.

Well, we've got these Nebraska wildfires that are ongoing, and the smoke is affecting everybody. Yeah, I think people just panic. Yeah. Like you mentioned, with the dry unseasonably warm winter that we had, you know, conditions have just been so dry that it only takes one little spark to start a wildfire and for it to just grow as quickly as it could, especially when we even had some windy conditions yesterday. But it was pretty crazy to watch because... I took a nap yesterday afternoon and looked out towards the mountains and clear as day, no problems there. Woke up and I was like, what is happening? Yeah. And I think a lot of people just panic. And they always remind you that don't call in if you just see smoke, call if you see flames. Right. Because they had all those calls that they were fetching yesterday. But it kind of came as a surprise to me because I was expecting. a little bit of rain. I was expecting some cooler conditions yesterday and a little bit of windier conditions. Not all of this wildfire smoke that has really been coming in from Nebraska. I mean, Nebraska has been struggling. I believe they said that four of the largest, one of the largest wildfires was burning. And I think they just got that one out. That was the moral fire, I believe. But Nebraska has had four of its biggest wildfires that have burned over 800,000. thousand acres. So it's no surprise that we're starting to see like these northeast winds that are blowing it into our area. We've seen it in the past, but I think it might have come a little bit more of a surprise to people yesterday because it wasn't something we were warning, yes, it's coming from here, there, wherever. It just takes one wildfires for us to be dealing with the smoky, hazy conditions similar to what we've seen in the past. And then for folks like me who may have allergies, asthma, Any of these kinds of conditions can certainly get your eyes watering and your nose going or your cough happening and it's never fun to deal with. You never know. I mean, in fact, a lot of what we see in Colorado in terms of even the ozone issue is from out of state fires and so forth that come into Colorado. And we think, oh, this is just Denver and what Denver's like because of our pollution or our fires or whatnot when most of it actually is coming from out of state. Yeah, I remember when we had those massive wildfires that were taking place in California. I believe that was early last year or at the end of the year before. that and it was coming all the way into here and it generally tries to like park right over Denver and we see it sitting there for a while and like you mentioned I mean it makes your your throat all scratchy and it makes the conditions just so I mean you look out to the mountains you can barely see them at times with the smoke that that pours in so yes that was from Nebraska don't panic But also, obviously, stay safe when it comes to our wildfire conditions because it's only a matter of time. And we could see something like that with the conditions that we've seen this winter. Yeah. And like you said and stressed and sort of getting to the point from the Castle Rock Police Department and why I read from it is.

You don't want to inundate the police with calls to find out information on if there's a fire nearby or not. You can check your local news website. You can listen here on K-O-A where we consistently have news, top and bottom of the hour. And in this program, and then from five to six, a lot more than that, where you can get all those updates, but then also Google. Google is your friend in that case. That's exactly what I did when I woke up for my nap, looked outside, I went. Oh, no, what are we dealing with? And literally just the national interagency fire center has a whole map of the entire country and every wildfire that's burning. I didn't see any in our state. And then I saw all the ones that were in Nebraska. And I said, that's got to be it. Yeah, that explains it. Just be careful out there, of course, in any of these sorts of conditions. Real quick, before we run to the break at 56690, COA Common Spirit Health text line. Coming in on his show, Michael Brown talked at the option airports have to opt out of using TSA screening personnel and instead use contract security with the stipulation that they are trained and held to CTSA standards and perform the same duties. Seems like the current TSA government caused fiasco highlights the need to make the change and switch back to airport security privatization. I would totally agree with that. I think the TSA shouldn't be in this way under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security. And instead, these responsibilities should be turned over to private sources. It's also something we should consider for air traffic control, which if the LaGuardia... incident crash just in the last week or so is any indication. We have ongoing issues with air traffic control. And certainly this DHS shutdown isn't helping matters on any of these fronts as well. The U.S. Supreme Court, just a couple of days ago, hearing oral arguments in the case of Watson versus Republican National Committee. Watson... referring to the state of Mississippi, a red state as they have gone before the U.S. Supreme Court over an effort to over laws on the books in Mississippi and some other states, allowing the counting of ballots received after election day. Should ballots that are mailed in, we're talking specifically mailing ballots, should mail in ballots that are postmarked before the election but received, say, three days after the election or a day after the election be counted as qualified ballots? And would this? ruling affect the state of Colorado, which of course has had universal mail ballots since 2013. Now, of course, keep in mind that... Some 75% I think of voters use ballot drop boxes. We'll verify that in a moment with our guests. But could it impact Colorado? What about the Save America Act being debated in Congress? To talk about all this, I'm very pleased to be joined by someone who knows these things inside and out as well as anybody can. Matt Crane is the former clerk and recorder of Arapaho County and the executive director. of the Colorado County Clerks Association, and he returns here on K-O-A. Good morning, Matt. Welcome back. Good morning, Jimmy. Good to talk to you. Thanks for coming on. So let's start with the Supreme Court case. If the Supreme Court were to say, we don't want ballots counted after election day, if they are received after election day, could that affect Colorado?

So for the vast majority of our ballots that have returned, it would not impact Colorado. Where we would see an impact here in Colorado is to our UOCABA ballots, which are our military and overseas voters. Right now, Colorado goes beyond federal law to allow ballots from UOCABA voters to be received up to eight days after Election Day, so long as it's postmarked by Election Day. And the thinking behind that is that our military, our frontline military, deserve every opportunity to get the opportunity to have their ballot counted. You know, they're putting their lives on the line for us. And so when Colorado passed that decade or so ago, the idea was to give them every opportunity to get that ballot back and have their voice be heard. But so for regular voters like you, me and Gina, who reside here in Colorado, if we mail our ballot on Election Day or a couple days before Election Day and then it gets received by our county clerks and recorder's office a few days after the election or a week after the election, that would not be counted, would it? That's correct. For every other button on, you will cover a ballot. We have a hard deadline where the ballot must be received by the clerk no later than 7 o'clock on election night. So if something comes in the mail the next day, it's not done it. Now, why is that? Why does Colorado, in your view, set up what I think is a very wise limitation that says if you are turning in your ballot, say, on election day, make sure to use a drop box or go to a voting center location. Don't mail it because we have this 7 p.m. be received by election staff by 7 p.m. no later, and we don't want you to mail it in at that point in time. We're not going to accept it. Why do you think that is good policy? Well, I just think it sets the rules of the game so that it's fair for everybody in that way so that you can know it's 7 o'clock. All ballots have to be received and you received after that, except for those Yulacaba ballots. You know, if they're received after that, then it's not going to count. Everybody knows that, they understand that. And we've built our model around this. You know, during the intro, you said that a lot of people use ballot boxes. That's right. In any election, it could be up to 80%, a little over 80%. people who return their mail ballots do so via a drop box and we encourage people now a week before election day if you have not nailed it back yet don't put it in the post don't put it in a post box at that point because it may not get to us in time and so our model works extremely well based on based on voter behavior and what we've been able to educate voters to do throughout that process Talking with Matt Crane, Executive Director of the Colorado County Clerks Association, when we look at the debate in Congress now with the Save America Act. And there are different bills that have been considered. Originally, they were looking at the Save Act. Now it's the Save America Act that's the priority. There is also make elections great again as well, which would be a lot more restrictive. But as you look at the federal debates in Congress, and I'm not.

asking for your opinion on them, but to understand how might the Save America act, if passed into law, impact the way Colorado conducts elections and has conducted elections, broadly speaking at least, because we've had a lot of different changes over the years since 2013. The illusion? We thought the same thing. Go on, Matt. Sorry about that. Okay, so in terms of the Save America Act, it would do a few things. First of all, it would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. And so, you know, that will be a lot more effort for the voter on the front end and for the election offices on the front end when requiring that documentary proof of citizenship. Now, that's not a driver's license because... While most people show proof of citizenship to get a driver's license, it's not actually a requirement. So think more like a passport or a birth certificate. There would be a national voter ID requirement, which means you'd have to show something, you know, a state issue that photo ID when going to vote in person. There's other parts of it too around federal involvement with their voter roles and sharing that data with the federal government. And then there's requirements too where if an election official were to fail to ask. ask somebody for their documentary proof of citizenship or, you know, just through the conversation, they get distracted, they don't ask for it, they register somebody to vote, they could be held criminally and civilly liable, even if the person ends up being a citizen. So there's lots of things to consider in this bill, which is why the debate in Congress has been so hot about it. Yeah, when it comes to the photo ID piece, I mean, that's something I'm a big, very much in favor of, but in Colorado, we don't have that requirement. There are different forms of identification that you can provide in lieu of an ID, right? Yes, yes, that's correct. Colorado, I think it's 19 or 20 different types of ID that you can provide to be able to be able to register and to vote. One thing about the Save America asked Jimmy that I think there's some confusion out there in the public square. Nothing in the Save America Act at this point that would ban universal mail voting. That would be the Mega Act, my elections Great Again Act, but nothing in the Save America Act would ban universal mail voting. And we're going to pick up on the question of mail ballots, keep them or toss them. Yesterday, President Trump was pressed on the fact that he voted by mail in a Palm Beach County election earlier this week. Take a listen. Tell me about mail-in-bells, go ahead. You may not use the mail-in-bell, you probably said, yeah, I did. You know what? Because I'm president of the United States. And because of the fact that I'm president of the United States, I did a mail-in ballot for elections that took place in Florida because I felt I should be here instead of being in the beautiful sunshine. You were in Tall Beach, sir, the last few weekends. That's right. And I, yeah, and I decided that I was going to vote by mail-in ballot because I couldn't be there. Because I couldn't be there. Well, in Colorado, it's really interesting, Matt Crane. Back in 2013 when we went to universal mail ballots, Colorado voters had already done in wide margins requested no excuse absentee ballots where they'd get an automatic ballot sent to them 70 to 75% of voters and then were a universal mail ballot. I don't know. I kind of think that President Trump described an instance where all Colorans are justified to expect a ballot to come by mail and they can decide how to drop it off or what to do with it. Well, it is funny, and that's one of the things in the debate over mail ballot. There are so many of these, you know, political leaders, whether it's President Trump or people here in state who say we should get rid of mail ballots, and then when you look at their voting record, their voting record shows that they vote mail ballot repeatedly. And so, you know, a lot of it is just political posturing, that type of thing. And the election officials are used to it, but the irony has never lost on us.

But your overall point, though, is right. You know, Colorado, we went to no excuse absentee voting around 1998. We went to permanent mail-in voting, which meant that you could sign up on a list to permanently get a ballot by mail in every election in 2005. And by the time 2013 came around, almost 80% of voters had signed up for the permanent mail and absentee list. And so in 2013, when we went to a universal mail voting process. We went where voters were telling us they wanted us to go. This wasn't something that was thrown on voters and people didn't like it. Male ballot has been overwhelmingly popular in Colorado for almost 30 years now. And so our model responds to voter behavior. We don't make voter behavior respond to what our wishes are. And as you said, as much as 85% of all male ballots are returned via Dropbox. I literally have 20, 30 seconds. I want to get this in real quick. A lot of speculation folks have been saying for a while and it's cropped back up this theory that the voting machines in Colorado are connected to the internet. Is that true? It is not true. And you're right. This is something that keeps coming up. Components of our voting systems have been all across the country that federal government certifies them knowing that there are Wi-Fi components in those devices. And some states actually use those that Wi-Fi capability to send results, unofficial results back on election night after the polls have closed. Colorado has always disabled those components. And now, as a matter of fact, I think if not all Colorado counties at this point, Only all but one or two have moved to Wi-Fi-free components now. Our systems are not connected to the Internet. We can verify that every election. And, of course, we audit the election thoroughly after every election to make sure that the ballots are counted properly. Nice and concise as we are over time. Folks, Denver Public Schools is hashing out whether or not to bring on board an independent council outside of the school district to help advise the board in particular matters. and handle certain legal issues that they think may need outside independent counsel. And they are evaluating possible options for who that could be or what firm that might be. My column today in the Denver Gazette, it's about time DPS board gets independent counsel breaks all of that down. Because, you know, I'm a well-known critic of Denver public schools. Let's put it that way. A lot of the school districts, but particularly I have explored, investigated, reported on, exposed, a lot of... happenings in DPS that are deeply problematic to say the least. Well, This is an instance where rare kudos are in order for the majority of Denver School Board, which is holding its ground on implementing a policy to hire, as I mentioned, outside independent counsel, which would be a non-staff lawyer or law firm to lean on when necessary. And the board, frankly, has good reason. Last spring, when the previous board prematurely extended the contract for Superintendent Alex Marrero, Locking in a $346,529 salary with added job protections before the board even conducted his performance review, the negotiations were funneled.

This contract negotiations were funneled through a two-member board committee with the district's general counsel, Aaron Thompson, as the go-between for everyone else. And at the time, legal experts were saying that the process likely violated open meetings laws. Moreover, Thompson reports to Marrero. Thompson, the general counsel, reports to Superintendent Alex Marrero, not to the board. That means one lawyer effectively represented both sides in a contract negotiation. As I write in the Gazette today, this wasn't just shady, it was indefensible, which is why this governance policy 18 was introduced last year by director Kimberly Sia in spring of 2025, which was ultimately passed. In October, in a six to one vote, the only dissenting vote was Sochi Gaetan, who is now the president of the school board. The only vote against this measure to allow the school board to hire outside independent council. Now, the board is considering requests for proposal process and possible options for who could fill this role. History sort of seems to be repeating itself. So the Denver Gazette reported that the March 19th board meeting was the first time that Marrero had publicly criticized the policy months after it passed. I wonder if he's expecting that he might be able to prevent the hiring of independent counsel by speaking out now. Maybe he didn't think it would actually happen. But here's the crux of Marrero's complaint. The policy lists key duties of the board council that are not limited to legal services related to the superintendent's contract and evaluation, which is common sense. You want to have outside counsel providing prospective assistance, maybe helping with negotiating the contract with the superintendent. It makes common sense, especially with what happened last year. and when there may be a conflict of interest involving the general council or the district. But Marrero pointed to those words not limited to as a major concern, and he's suggesting that it's almost hiring another employee for the district somehow. Here's what he said last Thursday. I don't know if I understand, but if it's beyond the scope of those three bullets. The point that I'm trying to have you all consider is that it can be perceived as another supervisory relationship that you're establishing. I'd be interested in looking more into that. That last voice, director, John Youngquist, on the school board. That's nonsensical. In fact, Amy Klein-Malk, a newer board member, said, we're hiring outside independent counsel. I don't think that argument holds up rejecting the idea that they're hiring an employee. Absolutely, you sign a contract.

That would be between the board and this attorney, their firm, what have you. And it would not be set up in any way that's an employer-employee relationship. That doesn't fly. Marrero is grasping its straws to protect his own institutional position. On the other side, I'm going to get to that just a little bit as we wrap up this discussion because there's two other things. that I want to make sure understood here because this is broader implications and is broader in the state of Colorado. This kind of model is not just something DPS is considering, but other school districts use it as well. So keep it here. Jimmy and for Ross, along with Gina Gondack on K-OA. I had the opportunity to interview Warren Haynes, the lead guitarist, singer of Government Mule, Grammy winner. He was formerly of the Almond Brothers Band for nearly two decades, so that was great. Usually they play at Red Rocks, but this time they are at the Mission Ballroom kicking off their spring tour with what they're calling Mile High Mule. Now, I was just talking about Denver public schools and the policy they put in place in October, their school board, to allow the board to hire an outside independent council to advise and assist them on certain matters, such as contract negotiations. and evaluations with and evaluations of the superintendent and a couple of other possibilities and beyond that at their discretion. And there's a pushback from the superintendent, Alex Marrera, last week on this, also pushback from Sochi Guyton, the school board president who last year provided the sole no vote against this policy. But one of the things that they're acting like in terms of the criticism is that this is some sort of radical or out-of-step policy that is inappropriate to implement. Yet other school districts throughout Colorado have used this model or even such as District 11 down in Colorado Springs currently use this kind of model of having for specific purposes. outside legal counsel, independent counsel that they can lean on that isn't on staff. And when you have, as I documented my Denver Gazette column today, it's about time DPS board gets independent counsel, when you have a failed attorney for the district like general counsel Aaron Thompson, and I document this in the piece, and I've been documenting it for years, it is all the more reason to make sure that the board has that ability. To me, what this is about is the board majority asserting its role as elected supervisors of the school district, not subordinates to unelected bureaucrats. And it is about time. But we have to start off with a very important question that Gene has got for you. Yeah, okay, we gave Ross the day off, but we can't give you the day off when it comes to just random, wacky questions. So I was forced to try to think of one today. This comes from a conversation we had a couple days ago. Mr. Mayor, we're curious of if you say, I love you to your friends. Oh, I do, actually. Yes, I do that. Guys, you've been ride or die for life, I will say that to those friends. That's what we kind of expected. Ross does not, but we had a feeling you were probably like a love you man kind of guy. That isn't one of my vibe. I'll give Ross a hard time for that. Okay, great. All right, great. So, Mr. Mayor, let's kick off with the story that will be happening this weekend with Denver Summit FC's home opener. Very exciting for Empowerfield at Mile High at noon tomorrow. Talk about what this means for the economy, what this means for Denver, and then just the safety and security concerns and the things that will be taking place in Powerfield. I assume it's going to be just as, you know, strict when it comes to just the safety and security for an event at anything at Empower.

Oh, it is. It's going to be amazing. But in terms of the city, I mean, yeah, people have probably seen this will be the highest attended women's soccer game ever in pro soccer history in the U.S. We have more than 50,000 tickets sold. And that's just been an example of how amazing the support has been for this team since we first brought it. I mean, we set records in terms of selling out the season tickets in terms of merchandise sale, and now in terms of opening day. I think Denver has always wanted a professional women's team. We are so thrilled to have the summit. They got their first win. this week against the reigning league champion from last year. So I think this team is already crushing it, and I can't wait to see them play it for the first time. I've been counting down the days. Mayor Mike Johnston, the band shell, this is a sad story, very somber. The band shell at Denver City Park was destroyed last night in an overnight fire. That, according to Denver fire officials and the nonprofit, of course, City. Park Jazz that regularly uses the venue. And to me, I'm a big music fan. I have a blues band in town and I play harmonica. So anytime I hear something like this, it breaks my heart. And I've seen shows there, including, for example, Big Head Dot on the Monsters and John Fogarty some years back. It's fantastic that Denver had this place. But I wanted to get your reaction to this sad news. Yeah, it was heartbreaking. I was there first thing yesterday morning. And, yeah, I think that I was there yesterday afternoon again, and of course a lot of Denver residents there. We've got folks who've been engaged there. We have people who've gotten married there. We have people who've come with their families to watch their favorite bands there. The good news is there will be no change in the programming. City Park Jazz is not going anywhere. We're going to make sure that continues, and we're going to get this thing. rebuilt as fast as possible, and we're going to hold accountable whoever is responsible when we figure that out. But I think the most important thing for people to know is that we already had a meeting yesterday to plan the redesign and the reconstruction, figure out how fast we can do that. And so, yeah, it's a hundred-year-old building. It's an icon in Denver. But what we do here is we make it through hard times and we rebuild. So we are committed to that. We took yesterday to more, and today we're getting to work. You mentioned it a little bit there, Mr. Mayor, but any word on a cause and investigation are neighbors helping in order to find maybe security footage or, I mean, anything that could really help? Yeah, we, investigation has launched our fire department, and our police department are on it already. We do have security footage from the region that's helping us. And so we are, we are on this right away. And they are working hard on that while we're working hard with our parks and rec team on the plan to. rebuild as fast as possible so we can get bands, probably even Jimmy with his harmonica, back onto that bandstand as fast as possible. I would love to do that. That would be an absolute blast. Mayor Johnson said, I know last week you guys talked a little bit about the audit released by elected city auditor Tim O'Brien of Denver's All In Mile High, Homelessness and Housing Initiative. That's the one that had the headline takeaway where the audit... asserts that the city's expenses here for the program cost $178.1 million, $20 million more than the presented $158 million. And bringing this up again, because I talked, we talked about it on the show yesterday. And when you hear discussions, especially from...

Someone like the auditor of Denver who's talking about such substantial numbers and saying this was undercounted and not presented. Of course, it gets people going, okay, what's going on here? Where is the fiscal responsibility? And can we trust the accounting? From that vantage point, how do you think Denverites should be looking at this audit and the all in mile high program vis-a-vis its accounting piece? Yeah, and that's why it's frustrating because it's just inaccurate, and I've told the auditor this, this is simply a failure of them to do the math on the programming that we described. What the city asked us to do was to do a specific accounting of the dollars we spent on just the all-in initiative. That was the new program I started when I became mayor, declared a state of emergency. We brought on those eight new sites, hotels, and tiny home villages, and folks want to know exactly what we spent on that. Our budgeting accounted for that perfectly, and there's not a single dollar that's overspent, a single dollar that's out of budget. The mistake the honor made was they counted expenditures that were other expenditures the city has around homelessness or housing that are unrelated to our all-in effort. I'll give you an example, Jimmy, cold-weather sheltering. We've been running cold-weather sheltering. We're on a random night. It's 10 degrees. We open a temporary shelter for one night. He's been doing that for decades. It's not a part of this program. None of that in one of the allocations. Same with what we would call our... congregate shelters, you know, the men's shelter at Jesus Saves downtown. That's been running for decades. That is not a part of this dedicated program. We, of course, account for every single dollar that's spent, but that is not a part of the accounting we make to the public on where exactly the dollars went on this all-in program, and the accounting to give to the public is entirely accurate. So what about the auditors, excuse me, finding in the report as well, Mayor Mike Johnston, that unhoused residents who have been housed and then leave housing, permanent housing, are still counted as housed even after they no longer are. Of course, for folks who may be looking at that might say, hey, that sounds like inflating the numbers to make the program look better. What do you say to that? Yeah, it's also just not accurately. We have the most transparent dashboard in the country where you can track every single person that came in and where they went and if they've been successful. And we've been clear we have about 7,000 people who've come off the streets and into what we call transitional housing. 5,000 have gone on to permanent housing. We track if they're still permanently housed. It's almost a 70% throughput rate. You can look at other cities around the country they brag about. having a 25% success rate. This is the highest need population that requires the most support, but we've been incredibly transparent about the outcomes, and you can see it on our dashboard and day you want to take a look at it, and that shows that we're still getting almost 70% of the folks completely through from the street to permanent housing, and that's not good enough. We want to do better, but it is, I think it is setting the standard for what's possible. Pivoting topics, Mr. Mayor. I know we talked about this a couple weeks ago, but now the Denver City Council has delayed the contract again for AXen, the new license plate surveillance system. You said that they were ready to launch by April 1st, but now the City Council won't be reconvening. I believe it will be next week Tuesday due to C-Saint-Poitte Day on Monday. So what is the current contract or the current status of the cameras? Are flock cameras still on? Is Axon going to be implemented or is this delay going to cause any issues?

Yeah, the big question will be on this vote next week, and I think the most important one is we need to keep on a license plate reader system to keep the city safe. I'll tell you, there's not a single city in America, more than 500,000 residents that does not have a license plate reader camera system. It is a functional part of current law enforcement. There's not any one of the 25 safest cities that doesn't have it. And so... You know, some of the largest, most progressive cities, you know, New York City run by a socialist, has a license plate reader system, one of the largest ones in the world, San Francisco, has a license plate reader system ten times larger than the one that we're talking about here. So it is just a common part of law enforcement in every city. All the protections are in place to make sure no one can access this data outside of the city and county of Denver. There is no person that is undocumented who will be at risk of the system because the data is totally encrypted. So the question is just are we going to keep on a common sense system that helps us fight crime in the city? Are we going to make the city more at risk and deeply helpful they're going to support the idea to keep it on? So are the flock cameras still on right now or those have been turned off as the contracts are underway? They're still on right now. That contract runs through April 1st, and so we'll hope that we'll get a successful vote and we'll have a smooth transition. But I think that all depends on what we get on Tuesday night. As a three-time victim of auto theft myself, between 2020 and 2022, no joke, absolutely the fact of the matter. I just somehow had some bad luck. I think that such a system is essential because when you have have the safety issues, when you have property theft, when you have all of those aspects, Mayor Mike Johnston, if you don't have some way to follow these, to track down leads, so on and so forth, especially when so many of these cars that are stolen are used to commit other crimes, I think you're doing a disservice to folks in Denver and elsewhere. Yeah, Jimmy, you're exactly right. You call us and say, here was my car, here's my plate. We can either say, oh, gosh, we just saw it at the corner of the Colfax heading west, let's send an officer that way. Or other options to say, okay, you want us to write down your license plate on a notepad and then have officers say, well, drive around Denver and see if you find Jimmy's car. I mean, that is just not a modern technology way to try to solve crime, and it will result in... People knowing it's far easier to steal cars in Denver and you'll see crime go up. So I think, I don't think, I never talked to a resident who says, hey, Mike, can you work hard at making crime? No one's asked me to do that. And so we believe this is a real common sense strategy to make sure that we can protect people's property in their lives. And we're going to keep pushing to do that. Protect other people from feeling the.

The best full circle moment I had at Red Rocks is I remember coming out here for a road trip and seeing my first Red Rock show and going.

Wow, isn't that crazy that this is some people's go-to venue? Like they just get the opportunity to come here all the time. And then sure enough, it was last year my husband and I were walking to a Red Rock show and I heard someone next to me go, Man, wouldn't that be so cool if this was your go-to venue? People travel from all over for the Red Rock season. And it is just, we're so grateful to have it all year round. 145 plus shows, comedians, movies, you name them, that all taking place at Red Rocks this season. Yeah, it is a phenomenal venue. Last week, I mentioned Government Mule is playing tonight at the Mission Ballroom. But when I interviewed Warren Haynes on Mandy's show, a week or two ago, Warren talked about and he travels all around the world. First of all, he said he's played there more than 30 times. And one year he played eight shows at Red Rocks between government mule and the Allman Brothers, which was still a band at the time. Greg Allman was still alive and so forth. And he was with the Dead and did a number of shows with the Dead for that year. And five of them, I think, were at Red Rock. So needless to say, He has been all over this, and he said it is probably his favorite venue in the entire world to play. Hands down. I think a lot of artists say that for sure. And the season gets underway this weekend. And I think one of the things that I always love watching at Red Rocks is, sure, the headliner, incredible, breathtaking. They love to talk about how much they love Red Rocks and love playing at Red Rocks. But the openers is that truly, like, awestruck moment where this is one of the most iconic venues they've ever stepped foot in. let alone being on stage, it's really fun to see some of those smaller acts be like, I can't believe I'm up here right now. It's an iconic place. I would love to go up on Red Rocks and play, you know, even an intro to one of those video, what do they film on the Rocks shows or what have you, would be a blast. But it is particularly for major musicians, artists, when you play Red Rocks and do a full show, that is one of those highlights where you're like, okay. This is a bucket list item that I have checked off. And I am very thrilled to be doing it. And then for a lot of them, it's repeat every year, every couple of years. I go back to Red Rocks. And I can only imagine how exciting and extraordinary that is for an artist to reach that point. Red Rock's also going through a couple upgrades this year too. So if you're planning a show, heading out to a show, even this weekend, like I mentioned, they already have like over 145 shows announced. And they continue to announce more as they... just add to the 2026 season. But you'll see a little bit of some improvements near the east terrace, near the east stairs entrance. They have a little bit of extra room for security. That really got really bunched up in that area. So they have more area for the security checks that happened there. And a new upgrade for the South merch stand. So this is right on top of the South ramp. You're usually out of breath by the time you get to that merch stand. It's no longer just a tent structure. It's an actual. full construction structure, a new permanent venue structure for the merch stand. So that probably helps even the people that work that merch stand as they just had this little tiny tent and then the merch line would snake all the way up to the stairs. So you'll see some new improvements. You'll see some great acts. You'll see the acts you love, some new acts coming to Red Rocks. And I mean, it's just an incredible season every year. It has got to be one of the few venues that you can go to and enjoy live music, get some food.

some beverages and get a nice workout in. At the same time, I mean, we're always hustled or bustled after the show. Let's get to the car as quickly as possible. Then, of course, no matter what, you're going to be waiting to get out there. But you're doing that quickly is like, okay, huffing and puff it, and then you get to the car. You're like, all right. Very humbling experience, for sure. And a Red Rock's hack, for those who don't know, but you should know, you can bring in food. Yes. So you have the opportunity you can bring in in a clear gallon-sized bag, some, you know, wrapped food, non-alcoholic drinks as long as they're sealed. So it's a great place to kind of sit down and have a picnic, enjoy some music. I remember early on dating my fiancé, I took her to Red Rock, see Joe Bonamasa, her introduction to the blues. And... I had no idea we could bring food in. And she's like, you've been to Red Rocks. Like how many times and this, you've never done this? And so we brought in sandwiches. And it was great. Saved some money. But it was just one of those things where my mind was blown. There you go. So many perks. So many great things about Red Rocks and the season is beginning now. Big news in the last couple of days coming from the International Olympic Committee, which finally did something that I think was so obvious.

it should have been done before now. The scientific evidence is very clear. Male chromosomes give performance advantages in sports that rely on strength, power, or endurance. At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat. So it's absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category. In addition, in some sports, it would simply not be safe. Indeed. Well, the IOC banned as banned biological men from women's sporting events, starting with the 28 Los Angeles Games. Eli Bremer competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing in the pentathlon, and he is one of the most recognized... Spokespersons, spokespeople, if you will, on this issue of standing up for common sense in the Olympics in sports. He's all over national media and more. And he joins me now to dive into this. Good morning, Eli. Welcome to K-OA. Hey, good morning, Jimmy. Thanks for having me on today. This just seems so obvious and common sense that all I can say is finally a no-brainer, Eli? Well, it's what you would almost call self-evident. The idea that we have to, you know, in the year 2026... state publicly that men and women are built differently is nothing short of stunning. And the clip you played, that was Christy Coventry. She is the new president of the International Olympic Committee. She herself is a gold medalist swimmer. She, of all people, knows there's a huge difference. If I take a gold medalist female swimmer, and I put her in the men's side, you've got a reasonably accomplished high school, but not college swimmer. That's the difference between men and women at the elite sports level. And, you know, it's funny, Jimmy, I was, I put out on social media yesterday. Yahoo News reported this and said that the Olympics had banned transgender from competing in the Olympics. That's simply not true. Nikki Hils is a female. who identifies as non-binary and male, depending on the timing, and she runs in track and field. And she competes in the women's category because she's a biological woman. There's no prohibition on transgender, and I wouldn't support a prohibition on transgender competing in the Olympics. What we have now is common sense that no matter how you identify, if you are a biological male, if you have that X, Y chromosomes, if you are a male, you will compete in the male category. We don't have an issue of females competing in male categories. This is one way.

Really underscore for a moment about that inherent advantage that males have particularly at that level of competition where folks like you are among the best of the best and you're there at the Olympics and a biological man is competing against a woman in any of these sports in particular where those inherent advantages can make an impact. Just really paint a picture for us. Well, they're everywhere. Okay, men's wind, wind pipes, air pipes that take air from their mouth down into their lungs is around 40% larger than women. Men have a bigger cardiovascular capability. Men's hips are narrower, so in things like running and jumping, they have an advantage. And these are, again, immutable. You cannot change them by simply altering testosterone or estrogen levels. These are structural advantages that men have. And again, this should be clearly self-evidence. Like literally there's not one case of an elite female athlete going after men, you're trying to compete as a male, just because it's not there. In the Olympics, the difference between first and fourth place is somewhere around half of 1%, or maybe a quarter of 1% performance difference. The average across all Olympic sports, the average delta between an Olympic male and an Olympic female athlete is 11%. Okay, so we're talking, you know, 25 to 50 times the difference. between, you know, the first and the fourth male and the first male and the first female. That is absolutely stunning in terms of performance. Again, we're talking with Eli Bremer, 2008, Beijing, Pentathlete in those Olympics. Eli, one more thing I think is important to underscore is that we seem to, after a few years of deviating from... I don't know. What to me, what to me is just the reality you laid out. We are back, moving back towards the center. And I don't mean like political center. I mean just sort of the center of thinking where you have this with the Olympics, or now we have a ballot measure that will be on in November to protect girls and women's sports in the academic world and so forth. And you have the Federal Department of Education. citing the Jefferson County School District, the second largest district in the state for violating Title IX by allowing boys to compete women's sports, so on, and other areas. What do you think is going on in this moment where now we have the IOC major international organization in terms of sports, the biggest? And then these other more localized things that are just seemingly... bringing us back to the norm? Well, I think it's a positive shift, and I think it's straightforward common sense. In the national polling, you'll see this polls at 80, 20. I think it's probably much worse than that for the opponents of this. And, you know, the opponents of protecting women's sports and protecting women's rights would say this doesn't happen very often. And I would point to the case of this volleyball player at San Jose State University.

who unknowingly was forced to not only share a room, but share a bed with a biological and structural male. Okay. And I would ask the question, people say, look, it doesn't happen very often. The question I would ask to anybody who says that is, what is the right number of women who should be forced to undress and, you know, placate a male's fantasy? My number is zero, okay? I think I would have thought after the hashtag Me Too movement, we'd moved on from this. I think the correct answer is the number is zero. There are no women that should have to give up their position on a podium to a male. There are no women that should be forced to room with a male without their consent. So this is just very straightforward. I think society went crazy for a few years. I think we're all coming back. This is not partisan. The vast majority of Democrats agree with nearly 100% of Republicans on this issue. I've only got about a minute left with you, Eli Bremer, but we had very tragic news about Iran executing a 19-year-old wrestler Saleh Mohamadi because of his protests. And speaking of the IOC, they released a very tepid dodging statement where they wouldn't take a position on this or to condemn it. Your thoughts, both on the execution and on the IOC statement in that regard? Well, I, you know, it was in the national media blasting the IOC on that one. I call balls and strikes, and that one was just a terrible misstep by the IOC. This should have been a no-brainer. This young man, 19 years old, a teenager, was executed in Iran under what appears to be substantially false pretenses because he was an Iranian athlete. So, you know, the IOC really had a misstep on that one. But it also shows where the Iranian regime is. This is a brutal regime that is murdering teenage icons in their society. So I and many, many, many other Olympic athletes stood up and publicly denounced this. We said this is a sign of an evil regime. And on that one, the International Olympic Committee really missed the ball. Absolutely. Eli Bremer, we're out of time, 2008 Olympian. Thanks so much for joining us, my friend. Dragon, I want to ask you, the next thing we're going to talk about the Harry Potter HBO series that, well, we all have some thoughts on all three of us, but I am. A Trekkie trekker, however you want to describe me. I love Star Trek. It's one of my favorite franchises ever. And I've been watching the show Starfleet Academy, which a lot of folks have pilloried because it is, in a lot of respects, very woke like Star Trek Discovery was. And there's a timeline continuation, this Starfleet Academy show basically. takes place after the events of Star Trek Discovery. So it kind of fits that it would be in that sort of similar mold. And I have mixed feelings about the show from a Star Trek fan standpoint. I didn't hate it. I thought it was better than Star Wars Acolyte. So I can at least tell you that. It doesn't take much for that. And there have been some comparisons made between the two, but I enjoyed it more than Ackolite without a doubt. But William Shatner has spoken out because Starfleet Academy has in the can, they've filmed all of season two. It's in post-production. And just this week... Paramount, which of course was recently purchased by Skydance. Now they're in the middle of doing the merger with Warner Brothers Discovery, becoming an even bigger company. And there's a lot of changes that have been made. And so Paramount has canceled Starfleet Academy after season two. They're not saying, I guess some studios sometimes will say, we're not even going to release the second season. We're just going to cancel it and scrub it. They're going to release the second season, but then that's going to be it. Well, William Shatner, God bless him. He just turned 95 years old on March 22nd. And he's on the record, by the way. Have you heard this dragon that Shatner is on the record as saying he has not watched like 90% of Star Trek? That sounds okay, yeah. So he's an actor from Captain Kirk in the very first Star Trek show. And he admits I've hardly watched any of the other Star Trek. I haven't even watched all of my show that I was in. Well.

He's now speaking out, saying that Star Trek existed more than one world. It exists in the fantasy of science fiction, weird and wonderful things that play unimaginable possibilities of exploration and human endeavor. But it also exists in the fantasy of human beings, the perfection of human beings, the exploration that human beings have made since the dawn of time and the continuing exploration, physically, mentally, and morally. It's that aspect of Star Trek that I've always loved. To look at something physically that doesn't exist now by these talented writers and designers, but also to tackle the eternal human questions, the agonies, the ecstasy. Star Trek should exist for a long time to come based on those truths. I, for one, would love to see its continuity. It's with sorrow that I hear about the cancellation. of the new Star Trek series. But then he went on to talk about DEI during the first airing of my Star Trek series where a kiss was objectionable. That would be when Captain Kirk kissed or Lieutenant Erhura. And that, of course, she was played by Nichelle Nichols. It was the first televised interracial kiss. And yes, indeed. There was objections to that. And as Shatner writes, many Southern stations pulled the episode and condemned the show. Using today's vernacular, it would absolutely be called woke DEI crap because it went against norms of society for its time. Not a lot seems to have changed. So what he's saying is that the objections that people have today to woke content in media is tantamount. to racism during the 1960s, finding that kind of a thing like the interracial kiss to be objectionable. And I find it interesting, too, because Shatner is not a very woke person himself. A lot of the things that he has said in the past have been sort of what Gen Z would say based, is very based oftentimes. So I don't know what's going on. Maybe he's feeling sentimental about, you know, turning 95 and Star Trek being 60 years for this point. Politics has always been left in Star Trek. That's a given. But I don't think politics is the issue here. This is an example of the ratings were not good. People were not watching this show. It wasn't getting much positive buzz. And they decided, you know what, we're going to cancel it. And now we're in a cutthroat streaming era. where you have to meet certain marks or we're not going to move forward. I think you also need to be a little bit careful as to how you insert these, quote, woke items and agendas and everything. With the kiss, we're talking one scene, one episode, but with a lot of the other stuff that you see, I haven't seen the series. I really don't know. I don't know how forceful it is shoved down your throat versus one scene one time.

Yes. Well, and there are some specific details to how that scene was conducted as well, and I won't get into it that I think make it a little more complicated, but it's interesting. And what a profound moment in history for sure. When we're talking about Starfleet Academy, I don't think it was too much in your face. There were some parts. I think more the problem was that they were trying to appeal to Gen Z in a way that was too overt and wasn't working. They weren't capturing that younger audience because we're talking characters that are college age. So they're playing in a lot of stuff and I think it's not working. That's what... The bigger issue is than actually the wokeism, as you're describing in your face, which Star Trek Discovery had a lot of that. The Acolyte had a lot of that in Star Wars. But what we're looking at here is a business decision. And I think to make it political, I would disagree with Shatner that in that point. And I think we need to look at it and sort of separate. Is this political? Is this a business decision? When streaming is not like, think about it, it's not like television where when Star Trek was on the air, they were doing 22, 24 episodes of season for the original show, for later shows when it was on TV. Now streaming's 10 episodes. So it's a different kind of animal from a business standpoint. And the executives are looking at it differently. Here's a question, though. When you take a beloved film franchise that is based on a beloved book series and you reboot that movie franchise in the form of a TV show for streaming purposes. Is it going to work? Is it going to be a good success? Harry Potter is making a return now on HBO with a brand new rebooted series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, not the Sorcerer's Stone change that was made for the United States when the books were released, but the Philosopher's Stone, per the UK, we're all going to talk about it on the other side because the teaser was just released. Well, yesterday was it? Day before yesterday? Day before yesterday, Gina. The Harry Potter HBO TV series, as I mentioned. Before the break, entitled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, when they released the book and the movie here in the United States, they changed the title to the Sorcerer's Stone. But this show is taking that. And so taking the first book and making that into a series, rebooting it with new actors for the characters. And obviously a somewhat different take. J.K. Rowling is involved directly in this production. Gina, what are your thoughts? I think I would file this in the Who Asked for this category. Because I don't know. When I watched the trailer, first off, the reboot is set to be released Christmas Day. So later on this year, eight episodes to open the series. The trailer's about two minutes long. And it shows Harry Potter finding out before finding out he's a wizard, getting his acceptance letter to Hogwarts, trying to travel through platform nine and three quarters, meeting Hermione, meeting Ron on the train. In other words, it's exactly the same. There is nothing new, at least when it comes to just like the overarching trailer of it. And it's funny because it looks like the exact same thing just with a new cast. Yeah. And a lot of the characters, except Snape, look exactly like they did when they played that first movie. So I'm just kind of confused of why, maybe? Because for me, I'm like Harry Potter came out back in 2001, the first movie. Yeah. And I almost feel like it's not been long enough to make a whole reboot. That's just me. I wonder if there are twofold just real quick. And then we'll get Dragon's thoughts before we wrap. If one is money, you know, they want to have a series out there and people love Harry Potter, so they'll be curious. And the next generation of kids today, giving them their own Harry Potter, letting them watch the show and enjoy it. But why wouldn't they just watch the old ones? There's nothing wrong with the old ones. I guess it's sort of like, not that there's anything wrong with, and you can share it with your parents who grew up watching it, especially millennial parents. Yeah.

The whole idea of it's mine and I can actually see it as it's going and we can sit down and we can watch it together and have that experience. I'm guessing maybe that's part of it. Maybe even Christmas Day you might have a good point if they're trying to launch it at a time where families are all together and go, oh, I remember this. Let me show my kids. I don't know. Dragon, your thought, you've read the books. I read the books and I've watched all of the movies, of course, and I just now watched the HBO trailer like five minutes ago. So this is my first initial reaction as to what I think of it. It's a two-minute long trailer. They spent the first minute. Talking about how Harry was mistreated as a child and with the Muggle family and everything. And overall, the tone of the entire trailer, not only in tone, but in color, was just... Dark. Guys, let's not forget that this was a pre-teen kid's book. That's a great point. And that just feels so dark and ominous. When you go back to the first movie that was released, there was that whimsical music, although the imagery was still kind of dark because there's the underlying tones of everything, but the music and everything lightened it up and this whole wizarding world. But this trailer didn't feel... Anything. It needs John Williams to do the music. A lot of people pointing out the music too. Because that's a great point. It's like, okay, if you want your kids to watch this and you watch the trailer, you go, maybe not. This doesn't feel like a kids movie. And I remember I was like 11 when the first movie came out and I never read the books except like half of the first one. And I remember really enjoying it, enjoying watching the movies and theaters and they were fun. But this, ah, not sure. Interesting.
