Meanwhile, Gina is back in the saddle here in studio after a couple of days. traveling to Jacksonville, Florida, and I think having a good time. How was your trip? The vacation destination of the world. I know everyone just blocks to Jacksonville, Florida, right? Well, how was it? It was fun. It was very good. For those who don't know that that's where I came from before I moved here, worked there for a couple of years. So it was nice to see some old friends. We even been back there since we moved here. So it was like fun to kind of go around and be like, Nothing has changed because it is kind of a quiet little beach town of sorts. So it was nice to see a lot of friends enjoy the beach. I forgot how lovely the beach is. I was never somebody growing up who traveled to Florida for vacation. We almost took it for granted when we were living there being like, wow, this is people's vacation destination. You know, they love coming to Florida. And this was something that we just.

moved for jobs and had the opportunity of living there for a little bit. So it was nice to hang out on the beach, see some friends, enjoy some time, went to the St. Augustine alligator farm. Okay. Which is a wild place because it is literally like a zoo with a ton of alligators. Albino alligators, little tiny ones, giant ones that you could actually... Feed them. I didn't know this was the thing. Mm-hmm. St. Augustine Alligator Farm. It is a very, very quirky place because you could actually like put a quarter in, buy some what looks like kibble, and throw it out to the swamps area and just watch a bunch of alligators, just eat a bunch of little tiny food like ducks. Like you're feeding ducks, but it's gaiters. Feed the gators. Feed the gators. Very, very Florida-esque for sure. Wow. But it was a fun. Good time. Do you ever get the feeling you said. When you lived in Jacksonville, this is people's vacation destination. Here in Colorado, that you live in another place that's people's vacation destination. Do you realize that? I think I take that for granted too. Yeah, because it's every time you like go up to the mountains and go to one of the resort towns and go skiing, you're like, oh my goodness, people spend so much money and so much time and so much effort to get out here. And ours is just a quick... our drive just for a weekend and go enjoy some skiing and come back home. And so, yeah, you're completely right about that is sometimes you're like, you go to Red Rocks. We talk about it all the time. You go to Red Rocks and go, wow, this is our backyard concert destination. Other people, this is their dream moment to really come out here and enjoy it. Yeah, exactly. It's kind of funny how that is you don't realize while you're here. Now, when you move here, you might, I just imagine that you initially had the sort of Wow, look at what I have right at my disposal, all the fun opportunities, but then you live here for a couple of years and you start getting used to it and it becomes home and then it doesn't exactly click. But when it comes to Florida, that is one of those destinations, particularly for beaches, like you're talking about, Jacksonville being a beach town. Growing up, my grandparents had one of their winter spring homes that they would go to in the winter and spring, obviously, in Orlando, or outside of Orlando, rather. And then during the rest of the year, they lived in the Otoronic Mountains at what we called camp, where my grandparents had built this house when my dad was a kid. And we would go back every summer there when we lived in New Jersey and then in Colorado. And absolutely beautiful. But when we'd go to Florida, it was a little bit to the beach, but it was predominantly Disney and being able to go to the Disney parks. And for people who live in Florida, even if you're, say, Jacksonville, and you have a drive, but it's still a drive versus a flight and having to do all the things. It's a little different. It is that Disney's near me, Disney's here. And I don't know how that works for somebody since it's such a major theme park and it's so darn expensive. Even living in Florida for a couple of years, we only did Disney once for a day and went.

Cool. We did it. That was great. Had you never been before that? I never went until I lived there. Wow. I wasn't a huge Disney kid growing up. And so it was, I think, just not. And like you mentioned, it's very expensive. So it's only gotten more expensive since growing up. And so I think it was something that, again, probably take it for granted because when we flew into, we actually flew into Orlando and then drove to Jacksonville and just. everybody on that plane is always going to Disney. It never fails, that entire airport. We watched a girl walk around the airport with a massive Yoshi stuffed animal that she clearly just got from the Super Mario World. And Parton was like, is that going to be her carry-on? Like, that thing is big enough to be a small child. Like, it's always a funny place when you walk through Orlando because it's all families always going to Disney. No, absolutely. And I'm kind of the reverse. We went to Disney. year after year because we'd stay with our grandparents and then at a certain point they moved out of state so a couple of times we stayed they no longer had their place there rather and we stayed um you know a couple of the lodges or what have you at disney but i haven't been back since i was 15 to disney world so i have no idea sort of what those changes are like i haven't gone to You know, the Star Wars, Galaxy's Edge. Not that I've been too excited because the Dragon will shortly get this. The sequel trilogy has been their emphasis, and that is not when I'm too keen. But I still love to go to Galaxy's Edge. But now, Keene and I were talking about, I think, yesterday, it is the average ticket price for a day. Some sort of package is like $220 or something. It's insane. It's just as expensive. You know, I even had the resident pass. There were some little discount they gave for Florida residents. And even that wasn't much. And then they used to do a ton of media perks and all that went away when I moved there. So it's like everything's very, very expensive. Just like skiing, a day pass to go skiing in our area. And then a day pass to go to Disney. It's just breaking the bank for these families. And it's like, oh, and then a family of five. And then let's add food and lodging and all of this stuff. I just. It's, I don't know how people do it, but people love it. They go every year for it. I think part of the problem is that there are people who do it. And therefore they think we can keep the prices high. We can keep raising them. They can go up, up and up. Even if we're pricing a heck of a lot of families out of a trip to Disney that will be memorable for. That's one of the big sales, selling points of Disney World and Disneyland is you come. It's a magical world. You'll make memories for a lifetime. We sure did. But now kids today, probably more often than not, won't have that opportunity. They do such a good job in making it feel like if you didn't go as a kid, you're missing out. Because I always remember giving my mom jokingly a hard time. Oh, our childhood was ruined. We never went to Disney. I didn't care. But it's one of those things that all parents are like, well, we have to. That's just something they got to do. And they're really good at monetizing on that and making that a thing for families. Oh, and they especially were for. I probably would say in the 2000s and that 90s, 2000s, they were really good at that for sure. A little less so now, but that's probably their own fault with the pricing.

That's increasingly what it feels like as we have the political warfare between the Republicans and the Democrats over issues like redistricting, aka gerrymandering congressional districts to advantage a political party. In particular, we have the Democrats last night. with 51% of the vote securing as much as four of the five Republican held congressional seats in Virginia for the Democrats, leaving potentially one district, one really large district for Republicans, two that would be competitive, leaning Democrat, and then the rest very solidly Democrat.

This began, of course, last year with President Trump putting pressure on Texas to do mid-decade redistricting. Usually what happens is you have the census every 10 years. And then after the census, redistricting happens so that by the next election, you are able to know the lines and have the new districts be those lines and the election happens in accordance with that. Well, Texas said, we're going to do this and change it up mid year, mid decade. And I think it's a little more complicated, some of the reasons that aren't entirely just political, but it was political. It was certainly to advantage Republicans. And there has been a tit for tat back and forth between Republican states and Democrat-leaning states. to do more of that. Well, Virginia did, I think, by far the most egregious example of this in a way that really disturbs me, and I think goes beyond any other states. The reason why I say this is some residents with Colorado, we'll talk in a few minutes, with Dick Wadams, of course, among the many things that he's done in the past in politics, is run the Republican Party a number of years back as state party chairman. And he's ran campaigns in other states as well and has a keen understanding of things. But we have in Colorado, and they have in Virginia, an independent commission that does these election maps is responsible for redistricting. And Virginia completely ran roughshot over that. And. threw it out for the next several years saying we don't care, we're going to rig the map in this direction. The thing that is stunning to me and that I worry about for Colorado is, well, look here, Texas isn't Virginia. I'm especially concerned when there are commissions set up to cut politics out of election maps like voters established in Virginia and Colorado, and they're just tossed away like this. And it would be an especially bad thing in Colorado, but maybe this portends for it to happen for the passage of a measure to be on the ballot this November for not this year, but in 28 to have congressional district lines where we essentially just have one Republican Congresswoman, and that would be Lauren Boebert. And free seats are Democrat. The impact internally is much greater. So you essentially result in one Republican in Congress because of the skewed map, which is not fair for Republicans inside Virginia in terms of having any sort of shot. What's interesting, too, is in Virginia, about 51% voted in favor. Well, 51% is the percentage of the population that are Democrats, registered Democrats in Virginia. And those lines lined up. Lots to talk about with Dick Watham's on the other side. But I want to know your thoughts on this gerrymandering. The people of Virginia, at least a slight majority, decided to toss out commissions for redistricting similar to what we have here in Colorado and to instead sharply gerrymander congressional districts starting for this election. So that the map will skew almost certainly from six to five, six Democrats, five Republicans in Congress from Virginia to 10 to one. As Ross Kaminsky. writes from his substack in a view from vacation as he gallivance around Europe. He says this is a result of Trump stupidly pushing Texas to do a mid-decade redistricting as if Democrats would not respond. The result may well be a net loss for Republicans in the House, but that's not the most important point. The bigger problem.

is that creating fewer and fewer competitive seats is a disaster for our representative form of government. I don't know if there would be a legal basis for the Supreme Court to rule against this kind of manipulation of congressional representation, but if there is one, I hope they will use it. It's outrageous and dangerous how few competitive seats we will have. And I couldn't agree more with that concern. So much to talk about with this. Let's take some time to speak with Dick Wadams. He is the former chairman of the Colorado Republican Party. He ran the campaigns of the last Republican governor in Colorado. Bill Owens, also the first campaign for now Senate Majority Leader John Thune. It's a guy who knows what he's talking about when it comes to politics. Dick Wadams returns here on K-O-A. Good morning, sir. Welcome back. Good morning, Jimmy. Good morning. Thanks for joining us. So let me get your top line reaction. This is pretty shocking now with this map and the fact that you had a slight majority in this day undo everything else. Upset the apple cart. Yeah, Jimmy, I totally concur with what you just quoted, Roz saying, in his piece today, and that you concur as well. This is very dangerous. And unfortunately, we're saying the same thing here in Colorado. I guess the slight good news of last night's vote is that the newly elected governor of Virginia, Governor Abigail Spanberger... He won by 15 points in November. This passed only by what I read this morning in the Washington Post was only three points. So it certainly didn't get a rousing huge majority from Virginia voters, but it did pass, as you point out. But it is totally dangerous, and I will tell you. It's going to create the same situation here in Colorado. It's going to deepen partisan divisions, and frankly, it's going to move Colorado further to the left of the passes here in Colorado. Yeah, and we'll talk a little bit more about that here in just a moment. I'm seeing, though, the latest date of 51.5% yes, 48.5% no. And we are talking within less than fewer than 100,000 votes making the difference. And what's really interesting, and I guess this kind of dovetails into Colorado, Dick Wattams, is that in Virginia... 51.5% vote for this, and it is 51%. I just was double-checking data last night. I saw 51% of Virginia voters are registered Democrats. Republicans are about 30 or so percent. And then you've got unaffiliated or independent voters around 18%. So the percentage lines up almost perfectly with Democrats there. But here in Colorado, we have far more unaffiliates with them dominating it more than half the...

half of the voter block. Well, that is true. And that dynamic of a majority of unaffiliated voters is going to continue for some time. In fact, I think it's going to continue to grow, Jimmy. And that's why it makes whatever appears on the ballot in November interesting, because I think there's a good chance voters will reject this power grab in Colorado in November. And if it passes, it will destroy what I think was a model. process in Colorado that was passed by voters in 2018, the Independent Congressional Redistricting Commission, which was implemented in 2022, and it worked great. And now the partisan Democrats in Colorado want to destroy it. And Colorado, according to the Princeton gerrymandering project, is I think has an A because of the map that we have through the redistricting commissions in terms of fairness. And that's what the unaffiliated voters, I think, really like here. And that would, if this were to pass in Colorado, would fundamentally undermine what voters were getting at in the independent spirit, where they prefer to have things a little bit more up in the air. Not only that, Dick, but you have multiple seats in Colorado held by Republicans right now. I'm particularly thinking about the 8th District with Gabe Evans and the third with Jeff Hurd that could go the other way, could flip to Democrats. There's no guarantee even that those are Republican. Well, that's right. In fact, I think if you and I had our way, we'd try to have four truly competitive districts that could go either way every two years. In Colorado, we've got the eighth, as you point out. The third district, where Jeff Hurd is serving, is not as Republican as some people might think. I mean, it is actually more competitive than people think. So I think the commission did a very good job. But now the – and this is the everything, Jimmy. This is really driven by outside groups in Washington, D.C. I mean, there are some Democratic Stooges here in Colorado who are doing the dirty work of Hakeem Jeffries, and Eric Holder who have run these big Democratic funding groups that are going to fund these campaigns to kill our commission. Without a doubt, and we see now some more brazen calls. I want you to get your reaction as we wrap up with you, Dick Wattams, to James Carville, former Clinton advisor and political commentator, who called for Democrats to bring the rigging to another level.

If the Democrats were in the presidency in both houses of Congress, I think on day one, they should make Puerto Rico, D.C. estate, they should expand the Supreme Court to 13. Eat our dust. They've done everything they could. They held up to 22,000 elections. They stole it. Supreme Court seats. So in essence, he's saying, let's go to 52 states. Let's just do it. And the Supreme Court, let's expand to 13. Don't run on it. He'll go on to say in this clip, Dick, don't run on it. Just get elected and do it. Oh, I believe that totally, Jimmy, that that could be the ultimate agenda of national Democrats is to basically reconfigure the Supreme Court and add two Democratic states so that they would have a clear majority in the Senate for the foreseeable future. I totally believe that. Let me ask you one final thing, Dick. When we look at Virginia, for some reason, national and state Republicans did not put up a fight against this. It was really strange as though they maybe thought that Virginians wouldn't be stupid enough to do this even by a small margin. Here in Colorado, we have a Republican Party, which I know you speak often about this as of I, which is a complete joke. Do you worry at all that the ineptitude of the GOP here might make it easier for that running roughshot over the commissions to happen in terms of redistricting and to allow gerrymandering? Or is the desire of unaffiliated voters to cut partisanship out going to outweigh the fact that the GOP is so incapable of, well, anything? Yeah, the Colorado Republican Party is irrelevant and impotive right now. The fight against this in November will have to be taken by organizations like Advanced Colorado, which I think they're putting some countermeasures on the ballot, as I understand it. So the fight will be made. And I actually think the National Republican Congressional Committee will not let them take three congressional districts in Colorado without a fight. So we'll see what... what happens. And I'm optimistic this can be killed. I think that Colorado voters have an innate sense of fairness, and I think they will see through this. I think you're right about that. I'm cautiously optimistic for November, and we'll see what happens. Dick Waterms, always good to get your insights. Thanks for joining us this morning. Gina, it sounds like you had some fun on the plane on your travels back from Jacksonville leading to, and I think this is 56690, K-O-A common spirit health text line, your suggestion, we need to get listener feedback because this is one of those situations where we all find ourselves in at some point, but the question is what do you do about it? Exactly. I'll explain my situation first, but I guess the texting question at 56690 is, do you say anything to anyone on a plane if they are bothering you in any capacity? Taking your armrest, kicking your chair, taking their shoes off, you know, anything like that. Have you ever been in a situation where you say something to anybody? at any time and maybe what was that situation but i had a situation i was not involved in it i should say i was the bystander in this situation of my flight back from orlando to denver yesterday and there was a family at like i mentioned disney world tons and tons of kids on all those planes at all times going to orlando so there was a family with several kids and one kid was very well behaved and i should say like toddler age not not young baby not like own seat seat toddler age one kid very well behaved the other kid

constantly screaming, not crying, just I'm talking, never stopped the entire flight, beginning to end, screaming, kind of babbling, just on top of their lungs screaming as loud as they could. And what do you do? Nothing. What are you supposed to do? You know, the parents trying, she was trying to calm down the kid and doing anything that she could, but you don't know their situation, you don't know what you can really do. So sure enough, I sat there. I had my headphones on. I tried to sleep through a majority of the plane. But when we landed, there was a lady. And this was maybe happening like several rows behind me. There was a lady that we had to stop because somebody wasn't feeling good. So they wanted to get them off the plane first. We hit some bad turbulence. I heard a lady audibly complaining. Turn to the mother and say, you ruined this flight for everyone. With your child, you ruined this flight for everyone. And then a bystander stepped in and said, you're rude. You don't say that to a mother. You don't know their situation. You don't know what she can do with her kid. You don't know his situation, her situation. You don't know what to do. And they went at it. Wow. And so they were just going back and forth and just bickering with each other. Just for clarification, this is the bystander and the rude person. Yes. Yes. So I actually do question if the mother of the child spoke English because she seemed a little thrown off when that lady started complaining to her. And she didn't respond. So then that bystander stepped in and the lady who was being rude stepped in. And I'm talking, she was going, next time you buy your own private flight if you don't want to deal with kids crying on a plane. I mean, it was just ridiculous. I'm stunned by that. And to me, I was like, we landed. We landed. We were about to get off the flight. So I was like, what is this? help in any regard in the situation because you're about to leave. She must have been so frustrated with the screaming kid, the turbulence, the long flight that she decided now before I get off, I have to get the last word in. The thing that bugs me the most is how she framed that was you ruined this flight for everyone. First of all, it's not the mom. So child, and when you're talking about a toddler, you can only do so much. Exactly. Especially on a plane that can be very uncomfortable, could be scary, any of those things. And you're literally being abrasive in that way. I think kudos to the bystander for stepping up and saying, what the heck are you doing? I'm kind of wondering if there were a couple of people that took out their phones and started recording. That probably happened, right? If it went on any longer, I was like, this might be a new story. Maybe I could be the first to cover it. Because it was also interesting. We were on a flight where they actually acknowledged there was a couple new flight attendants. This is their first time as a new flight attendant. We all applause and that kind of thing.

I also felt like I've had a feeling with the new flight attendants. They didn't intervene as quickly as I probably feel like they should have to then like stop this before one lady stands up and starts throwing punches. I don't know. Like it was one of those things where it went on for so long that the flight attendant eventually came up and said, okay, you know, we're almost done. We're about to get off the plane. Just just settle down here and stuff. But I'm one of those people where I'm like, if it can't be fixed, there's nothing that can happen about it. Maybe just don't even acknowledge it. But in this case, I think that it is. Beyond a lot of the other circumstances, in terms of how she said it and the way the woman acted towards this mother, makes me also wonder if that woman has any kids and had any sort of experiences to the challenges and difficulties of a child in that situation. It was definitely one of those moments where I was just... I could not get over the fact of the way that she said you ruined and tried to include all of us for everyone. She said it loudly so everyone would hear it, I assume? Oh yeah, absolutely. It was a huge scene. I was like, wow, it was something else. But I am curious, maybe not in that situation. But in other situations, have people been in a moment where they're like, I got to tell this guy, he's kicking my chair, I got to tell this guy, I got to tell whatever. Have you been in a situation? We had a really fascinating indictment come yesterday. from the Department of Justice and the FBI director, Kash Patel. And I should add the... Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche as a federal grand jury indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center on 11 counts, including wire and bank fraud, according to the acting attorney general. Earlier on Tuesday in the Middle District of Alabama, a grand jury returned that 11 count indictment. I'm reading, by the way, from the Washington Examiner. Charging the SPLC with six counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. The SPLC is a nonprofit group that says it fights for racial justice by working to dismantle white supremacy. They will identify different organizations, oftentimes even just mainstream conservative organizations, and say they are racist, this and that. Sometimes they also identify, of course, often would identify genuine extreme groups as well. So there's real mixed bag. Sometimes, though, the... the groups that they will identify. Are you kidding me? This is ridiculous. But nevertheless, they represent themselves publicly as monitoring extremist groups and providing research to law enforcement aimed at disrupting those networks. But according to the indictment by the DOJ,

National Alliance, the National Socialist Movement, the Aryan Nation Motorcycle Club, and the National Socialist Party of America, and also the American Front. Now, those are groups that are legitimately extreme, racist, hateful, bigoted organizations. So why in the world are they getting money from the SPLC that's supposed to be a watchdog over these extremist groups? In at least one of these matters, our investigation revealed that funds were used to facilitate the commission of further state and federal offenses, totaling over $3 million. Furthermore, our investigation revealed that the Southern Poverty Law Center, on top of perpetuating this widespread, decade-long, multimillion-dollar fraud conducted more criminal activity. And he goes on. This is astonishing, but what I appreciated from the press conference was that prosecutors, Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, was asked whether prosecutors were alleging that the SPLC had sought to use extremist groups to shape public perceptions of right-wing extremism. Again, I'm reading from the Washington Examiner, and Todd Blanche declined to go beyond the charges laid out in the case, saying, quote, what the Southern Poverty Law Center has said over the years is available for the world to see on their website. He told the examiner, The indictment speaks for itself. I'm not going to talk outside the four corners of the indictment. I like that. This could be a political opportunity for the Trump administration to make political points about this. But this is what the Adacting Attorney General and the FBI Director are doing the approach that they're taking is this is the issue. Here are the concerns. Here's what the indictment says. We'll see how it proceeds. We're bringing this case forward. But to not get into the specifics of political conclusions is exactly what you should do when you are in law enforcement. Especially in an administration that's very political, often like Trump, an understatement. It's good to see Todd Blanche and Kash Patel approaching it exactly this way. It was actually really fun. But she wore the exact same lavender corset body suit, tights, gloves, sunglasses, the same outfit that she wore during her 2006 Coachella set. So then... On Monday, it was a great show. People loved it. It was great to see them kind of collaborate with each other. And then on Monday, she released a statement and said, hey, you know that iconic outfit that I wore that I was so excited to tell everyone about how I wore 20 years ago also on this stage and yada yada. Yeah, it's gone. We have no idea where it is.

So now the latest update that I saw, because at first I was like, someone stole it, like you mentioned, could be a black market situation. People know that this could be worth something. There was an update. It could be a Tom Brady Super Bowl jersey thing. Exactly. There were so many things that I was like, clearly somebody took this, right? Well, someone might have still took it, but they said the last place it was was in a black garbage bag on the back. of a golf cart on the bumpy, dark roads of the music festival. What? What? Like intentionally? So clearly it was like bagged up after the performance, the jewelry, the clothing, everything was bagged up. And then they kind of transport artists around in these golf carts, threw it in the back of the golf cart, went down the road and they said, that's the last place where we remember it. So it might be a little less exciting. It might actually have just gotten lost. In a garbage bag and maybe end up in the trash. Fell off of the golf cart. And I guess I shouldn't say garbage bag. It was in a bag is what they said. It could have been any type of bag. They did say a bag. But they said that's where all the clothes and the jewelry was. And on the back of a golf cart and then going down these roads, they said now it's gone. So either fell off the golf cart could be in the trash. Now in the hypothetical. Or maybe someone picked it up and said. Well, is this Madonna's outfit? Yeah. Or is some, and would that be considered a theft then? And we still have a whodunit mystery dragon. You mentioned the Tom Brady jersey real quick. Yeah, it was just a Mexican journalist who just was in the locker room. Yoink, known for just a snagging up memorabilia. We're back in war in the Middle East and another country that begins with IRA and has one other single letter after that. And here we are. Two weeks into a ceasefire. Just over two weeks now, and the ceasefire is continuing with President Donald Trump yesterday putting out the statement based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so. And upon the request of field marshal, Assim Munir, and Prime Minister Shabaz Sharif of Pakistan, We have been asked to hold our attack on the country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal. I have therefore directed our military to continue the blockade and in all other respects remain ready and able. And will therefore extend the ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted and discussions are concluded one way or the other, President Donald J. Trump. That was a really interesting phrase here, starting to the social post, based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so.

Loyal listeners to this program will recall a couple of weeks ago in regards to not unexpectedly so, we had on. Retired Brigadier General Doug Odie Slocum of the U.S. Air Force for some perspective as the ceasefire was just beginning. And he said this. You know, my opinion of what I think we're looking at here is the civilian leadership said, okay, let's do a ceasefire. And you've got the guard that's basically saying, no, we're not going to do that. And I'm sure that there's a lot of obstinant military folks that are saying, no, no, no, we want to keep fighting in this case. Two weeks later, Brigadier General retired Doug Slocum joins us once again here on K-O-A. General, are you Nostradamus or something? Because you clearly were spot on if the president is using that as part of his rationale for why this ceasefire is continuing, sir, and welcome back. Well, it's always great to talk with you. And, you know, I guess it's just not an unexpected outcome from the events. You know, there was a concerted effort to take out the leadership in Iran, and, you know, when we cut the head off the snake, there's got a vacuum to be filled. And IRGC has always been a very powerful force, and they're basically stepping in. And I think we're seeing that chaos right now, that fracture between the civilian leadership and the military, the civilian leadership ceasefire. The military says no. We're going to keep doing what we want to do because we want the upper hand from the military perspective. And they think they do hold the hand. And here Iran fired on three ships in the Strait of Hormuz and seized two of them on Wednesday, according to Yahoo News, intensifying its assault on shipping in the Key Waterway a day after U.S. President Trump extended the ceasefire. I think we are seeing that play out, but the question more than anything is where it might go from here. If you have the civilian leadership wanting to have some sort of an agreement. But the military says, no way, we don't want to comply. What can you even do in that regard? And what does that say about the rationale behind President Trump saying, you know what, we're not going to upset the apple card here? Clearly there's division. So the ceasefire continues. Well, I think it's kind of a holding motion from what I can tell at this point. There are clearly reports coming out that IRGC, you know, the military that arm there in Iran has taken control of most of the levers of governmental power at this point. But clearly at the diplomatic side, who's talking, who's the voice of Iran, who's saying what is still very murky.

So I think it's a lot of confusion. And in the light of the confusion, it's like, let's take a deep breath and see if we can get a little clarity. What does this say about the current state of affairs in the region general? You certainly understand the Middle East. You've served there. You've worked closely with the IDF. You've flown missions there in the Middle East. When it comes to the fact that you have these Arab countries that are... They're not sure where things are going to go and they're being adversely affected dramatically by the shutdown of the strait of whore moves and the ongoing hostilities. How does that division among the Iranian leadership raising so many more questions impact regionally? Well, there are so many different things that play right now in the region. One is that we have this tendency, and I think, in our country, to assume that everybody has the same frame of reference that we do. And that's just not the culture. That's not the approach in the Middle East. And it's way different in Iran with that great Persian pride that they have versus Arabs across the Gulf. And when you look at that, I think there's just a whole lot of we are not going to bend. We're not going to give way at this point. And we're seeing that play out. And as I said before, I think the biggest strategic mistake Iran made was attacking its neighbors because they might not necessarily have the military force, but they certainly from an economic and diplomatic side can put some extreme pressure on Iran. So they're seriously isolating themselves with their actions. Yesterday on CNBC, President Trump talked very optimistically about the current state of affairs for the U.S. vis-à-vis Iran. We've totally won the war. You know, if you read the New York Times, you think, oh, gee, when are we surrendering? We have totally beat them militarily and otherwise, and otherwise. I mean, I wish I could hear the conversations we have with them. So we've totally won the war. The question is, to what extent is Iran using this opportunity, or the IRGC, using this opportunity to rearm and prepare for more combat, same on the United States side, or is it a circumstance where especially with internal turmoil General Slocum? The Iranian regime is going to be less capable and therefore maybe Trump is right to be declaring already we've won the war, although it seems to me still to be again premature. Well, the battlefield is only part of this. We always have to keep in mind, you know, the adage about winning the battle, losing the war. There's other aspects that come into play with all this. Certainly Iran still has asymmetric types of capabilities. They know they weren't going to beat us one-on-one, playing for playing tank-for-tank-tank sort of a thing. That's why they've come up with the strategy and tactics that they've been using.

You know, where this goes going forward, like I said, I think Iran seriously thinks they still have a dog in the hunt when it comes to this fight. Declaring victory at this point, I think would be a little bit premature, but certainly have we won on the battlefield? There's no doubt, but there's still more to be played out here. General, let's talk for a moment about the end game here, with so many questions swirling about, because in part, the Iranian regime is, as you noted on this program, two weeks ago, and President Trump observed yesterday in his announcement regarding the ceasefire extension, the Iranian regime is split.

between the civilian leadership and the military leadership, particularly the Revolutionary Guard. And that begs the question with the questions about nuclear enrichment and the Strait of Hormuz and other ones, other questions. What an end game might possibly even look like? From a military perspective to say, okay, not only is President Trump saying we've won the war, but we're done. Well, there's a hard, it's hard to imagine that this is going to be a clean cut finish one way or the other. I mean, just looking at the internal politics of Iran, now throw in the regional politics, the geopolitics that go on. I see personally, I think there's going to be a turning down of the heat for a period of time, but especially if the IRGC stays in power in Iran the way that it is, I don't see this being solved in the long term. and then there's going to be a continual presence and there's going to be continual issues and conflicts that are going to continue. Would it be a possible scenario, or not saying likely or anything, but just trying to game it out, that the United States Navy would have a continual presence, at least in the Strait of Hormuz, to keep shipping open, not where there's a blockade per se, but where they ensure that the strait is open and that the passage of these ships can continue. And when necessary, restrict the flow of certain ships that may be diabolical in nature, shall we say, from Iran. Well, all we have to do is look at history with that one. We have had a naval presence over there for decades. Sure. We've got a military presence there, whether you name the domain, we've been present and active there. So I see that's going to continue. Certainly from the ISR, eyes and ears, watching what's going on and being able to respond to things, we're going to continue to have that capability over there, I think, for quite a while. And that would be elevated, though, from where it has been. in decades where potentially you could see a role in, I don't know if we say policing the straight of Hormuz now, but certainly having some authority over trying to exert authority over the flow of traffic to keep it open. It seems a little bit different.

Well, it does. I mean, the pendulum has swung back and forth over there in terms of the amount of engagement. I personally would see that, you know, based on what the president said, that there's going to be a big push to try and get the allies to step up and take a lot of the military action, the economic security aspects of securing the straits, where we would end up in a more diplomatic oversight strategic role. Yeah, that would certainly make sense. Just a couple minutes left with our guest, retired brigadier general Doug Slocum. Call sign was Odie's combat pilot. When we look at the... willingness of the American people, this is always the thing, especially when it comes to military engagements in the Middle East. The American people, understandably, very wary after so many years in Iraq and in Afghanistan of prolonged military conflicts. Do you get the feeling that... If this is sort of more narrow an approach and it's not such a heavy combat operation, but it's a more elevated presence and we maybe see some things that happen militarily, but it's sort of a status quo for a while of the ceasefire. Do you think that there could be a bit of an appetite for the American people to continue that because they're not seeing the headlines of all the conflicts and so forth? Or do you think we'll get to that point of fatigue quickly? Well, I think you're right, the 24 hours news cycle, what's on the headlines today, and if this gets removed from the headlines, you're just not going to have that push politically and all necessarily to disengage. You know, like I said, it's just going to be a little bit of muddy water going forward, but without the headlines being up there, that pressure, I think, is going to be off. Finally, the straight of our moves we've talked before about the geography and how the reasons why it is so heavy for transporting oil from the Middle East, other parts of the world, as well as fertilizer and fertilizer imports. You don't really have the capacity other than Saudi Arabia, I believe, for any pipelines, for example, to bring oil into those longer distances. So you really rely. on the straight of Hormuz. And the question is about the circumstances and dynamics in regards to all this for getting that economic flow. opening back up again because you have this squeeze. We're feeling in the United States, even though the markets are doing quite well. And you have other countries on the world that are being hampered by this. They need the development of those resources to continue. Any thoughts on whether that will be able to happen soon? Or are we looking at just sort of a greater stall?

Well, you bring up an excellent point that I don't think we've talked about before is, okay, the Strait of Hormuz, 20% of the world's oil passing their, you know, a lot of it pointed towards the Pacific. And not just the cost, the risk, and everything, throw in insurance for the ships. that we're going to see more alternatives. Saudi Arabia built that pipeline across the peninsula. I think we're going to see the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and some other countries take initiative to start very similar types of things to circumvent that strategic chokehold of the Strait of Hormuz. Yeah. It'll be fascinating to see how it unfolds. And I know I'll be calling on you again in the near future for your insights. This is one I've been wanting to talk about the past few days, but have not gotten around to until now. A refund system, this from the Associated Press, for businesses that paid tariffs, which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled President Donald Trump had imposed without the constitutional authority to do so, was scheduled to launch on Monday. Importers and their brokers will be able to begin claiming, and I will say were able to begin claiming refunds through an online portal beginning at 8 a.m. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency administering the system. It's the first step in a complicated process that also might eventually lead to refunds for consumers who were billed for some or all of the tariffs. on products shipped to them from outside the United States. Wouldn't that be really interesting if we end up seeing consumers? getting refund checks from companies saying, hey, we paid X percentage of your, you paid X percentage of your cost to help offset the tariffs. We're getting this money back. We're returning the money to you. Thanks for being a loyal customer. That would be a great marketing strategy, by the way. Let your customers know. This is what the cost of those tariffs were. Don't support the tariffs moving forward because this is what it's going to cost you moving forward as a consumer. I don't know that businesses are going to do that, but I think it would be smart to refund and make that point. And make it very clear, here's the real cost of the tariffs that you, the customer, have been paying. Companies must submit declarations listing the goods on which they collectively put billions of dollars toward the import taxes that the court subsequently struck down. If CBP approves a claim, it'll take 60 to 90 days for a refund to be issued. The agency said the government expecting the process refunds in phases, however, focusing first on more recent tariff payments, any number of technical factors and procedural issues could delay an importer's application. And this is going to be difficult. I mean, how do you suss out with a number of importers that have had to pay tariffs? How do you suss out what's what and what needs to go back and how much and all of these things? And then what does that do? Of course, President Trump had been making the claim. Oh, look at all the tariff money that we brought in.

We have all this money and we're going to be able to do X, Y, and Z with it, and you can't do didly squat with it because the Supreme Court struck it down, which means the money has to go back to the importers that paid the tariffs. And keep in mind, it is the importers that paid the tariffs. Not a Chinese manufacturer sending a product to the United States, the American importer. And those companies try to eat as much of the cost as possible, but there's only so much that they can do before they have to pass on costs to the consumer. Of course, this followed the six to three decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on February 20th that found that President Trump had usurped Congress's tax-setting role. when he set new import tax rates last April on products from almost every other country, citing the U.S. trade deficit as a national emergency that warranted is invoking of a 1977 emergency powers law. That was, I say, frequently, fragrantly. I can't talk the word. Flagrantly unconstitutional, but the Supreme Court didn't argue so much on the constitutionality as they did on the law that President Trump took authority from and said, this is where I'm getting it from. Now, of course, President Trump has been putting additional tariffs, new tariffs in place using different legal authority that's being challenged in court. But the tariffs that have already been gathered are being refunded. And that's significant from the past couple of years. Now, year and a half. Now moving ahead, we can see what happens. And if President Trump's tariffs are then again challenged in court as they are being and struck down, then that will be another refund. And you keep having this back and forth, back and forth. Now, who knows what will happen? He's using different authority, and that different authority may be justified in the minds of the courts. We'll find out at a later point. But this is certainly a telltale sign that if the legal authority is not actually there, then the tariffs are going to be gone back to those who paid them, that revenue. And I think that's a wonderful thing. Very encouraging. to see this actually happening. Because there were a lot of questions. We're like, what happens? Trump lost this. What's going to happen with all of that tariff revenue? And now we know. Meanwhile, this is just a really interesting tidbit locally. This from the Denver Gazette. Jeffco Task Force arrests two dozen fugitives in two weeks. The U.S. Marshal Service, along with Jefferson County Law Enforcement agencies, arrested nearly 30 people avoiding violent arrest warrants in the area. District of Colorado U.S. Marshal Kirk Taylor announced Tuesday that the Colorado Violent Offender Task Force's two-week Operation Gateway Sweep led to the arrest of 24 fugitives in just 10.

days. We work for the victims, Taylor said during a news conference. The victims have a right to have their case adjudicated. What this does is activates their case again. By the way, the operation started with the task force reaching out to the Arvada, Lakewood, Wheatridge, and Golden Police Departments to put together a list of the 30 most wanted suspects in the area. This is wonderful news. We don't hear a lot of these stories, but here you got a two-week time period where the feds reached out to local communities and said, hey. Police departments in Golden and Lakewood, Arvada, these other places in Jefferson County, we need your cooperation. What can we do? What target should we be looking for as far as fugitives? Let's make it happen. And they have. Wonderful news coming out of law enforcement. Courageous men and women in blue at the federal level, at the state, county municipal level, doing yeoman's work. And here's a prime example of the kind of thing that they're doing that yields great results. Let's keep it going. Get more of those fugitives that deserve to be in court. to have their say, but most importantly, the victims to have the opportunity to speak out and to see justice be done. I'm Jimmy Sangenberger and for Ross Kaminsky on the news with Tina Kotek as we are rolling ahead. And I think when we see these issues, there's so much to think about in regards to law enforcement and how. Day in and day out, I think I really want to iterate this day in and day out, they're going through the ringer, providing better safety for our communities, putting their lives on the line for ourselves and making so many sacrifices for their own family, which is why when I see the Aurora City Council. Rejecting a memorandum of understanding, outlining guidelines for Aurora police officers, report responding to the geoimmigration and customs enforcement facility in Aurora. An agreement that according to the chief of police there, Todd Chamberlain, was intended to lay out more, quote, clear, lawful, organized guidelines. I go, what are you doing here? You're attacking law enforcement and you're making it more strenuous for local officers to know what the lay of the land is for cooperating with ICE. And for ICE officials to know what are the rules of the game that we're going to abide by. These are agreements meant to protect communities, meant to protect officers, meant to protect.

The rule of law and the Aurora City Council Monday night rejecting this MOU. It's absurd to me and I think very risky. Now, hopefully they'll get something done soon that will pass muster and ideally won't restrict much more than already is the case. But this isn't some grandiose thing. This is a facility that's been there for decades. And they need to have ground rules. And those ground rules are provided in an MOU. And they're playing politics in the Aurora City Council. Jimmy, the most value concerning tariffs is the renegotiated trade deals going forward that are far improved over the past. Refunds are not the most important point. I would ask you to. actually provide me with a single example of one of the trade deals that President Trump has secured that is actually better than anything we had before. I don't agree with or accept the premise that tariffs are a tool for negotiation. Nor do I accept the premise that the trade deals that we've gotten under Trump are better. In fact, I think NAFTA was superior to the USMCA, but that's a whole other discussion. Provide me some examples, please. Specifics. We hear all this talk about, oh, this is better trade deal, but what? What's the trade deal that actually is superior to where things were before? I haven't seen it. I like this idea of a thematic drone show focused on a major franchise. It's just going to be fun. I think the biggest takeaway I have from these drone shows is that I'm surprised at took until now to really monetize on it. Like I feel like this is, we're seeing more and more drone shows around 4th of July. Denver always does the mile high drone shows November, like pretty much every single night from November through New Year's Eve. They're launching all these drones as celebration of Colorado's 150th. America's 250. And now we're starting to see, okay, a Harry Potter drone show. Will we see a Disney drone show? Will we see more people be like?

We can actually take this because this sounds like an actual touring show, not something that's just taking place in Denver. There's other cities that are going to see this Harry Potter drone show too. So I think we might see some more thematic ideas of drone shows in the future because they realize it's a great way to monetize on it. I want a Star Wars drone show next year. Dragon, we got to get to somehow we got to get this to Denver. To celebrate 50 years of the Star Wars franchise, we need to have that drone to come with the explosions. Perfect for the sky. It's like the Death Star shows up and then boom, it blows up. And then you see the Thai fighters and like, you can have an epic space battle in the sky. And you don't have to be a big Star Wars fan or have seen Gina, any of the Star Wars movies in order to enjoy the drone show. And I think the reason why maybe we haven't seen more of them is because. It's a drone show. It's up in the sky. Yeah. So they're trying to do this Harry Potter drone show with a live electric violinist on the Tibalee quad of the Rary campus. So you can enjoy it that way. But you could be a couple steps off the typically quad and still likely see the drone show pretty well. So it's probably one of those things that they're like, okay, how are we going to try to monetize? When we want people to come in, I don't know, they'll probably have butter beer and all the other Harry Potter festivities there. But it's more of one of those things that you can see them anywhere when they're kind of in the sky above you. You find any of the... rooftops around Denver or any of the places where you like to eat and drink and enjoy it that way. And that's one of the cool things about it because you can go for the full experience or you can be farther off. Look up in the sky and see what's happening. God willing, next year, see a space battle up in the sky for the first time, which would be, I'm all for that. I'll go, I'll perform. You know what? If we can find some way to bring the Jimmy Jr. Blues band to play along with Star Wars, a Star Wars spectacle, I'm all for, now how blues would fit in? We heard a little bit of what's going on today from Gina, but when you look at the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ for the past five years, we are at records, meaning we are at records, period, beating everything for five years. And in the midst of what's happening with Iran and oil and economic uncertainty, We still have that and the Dow Jay Jones Industrial Average nearing its peak as well. Yesterday on CNBC, President Trump had this to say about the markets. The numbers are what they were when we started this whole thing. I thought they'd be down 20% or down a very substantial amount. Even when it was down more a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised. I thought it would be down much more and I thought the oil would be much higher. And I'm very happy to say that it wasn't. Yeah. And he has a lot to be able to chime in positively about in that regard. It is a pleasant surprise. Also writing on this with a view from vacation from Europe, our own Roskiminski saying on his substack, the American stock market has recovered essentially all losses from the war, which is truly remarkable to watch, especially with oil prices and interest rates still elevated. It's difficult to reconcile the stock market's confidence in a relatively quick, favorable outcome of the war with the obvious challenges to that happening in the fact that Iran is now more convinced than ever that they can leverage the world by closing the strait of Hormuz. As far as the divisions within Iranian leadership, it seems likely that the IRGC has increased its power, which also is a net negative for the United States.

General Doug Slocum earlier in the program about this. I'm more optimistic, especially based on that conversation than what Ross is expressing here. But in terms of the stock market, it is very surprising that folks are thinking, oh my gosh, you know, investors looking at this and saying, let's keep going. We're a little bit more confident. We're looking at the prospect for... wrapping this thing up or at least having some sort of stability that we can work on. I mean, having a U.S. presence for a while in the condition of a ceasefire and reaching a state of affairs where the strait of Hormuz can be opened and the flow of oil and fertilizer components and so forth can be resuscitated. At the very least, that would be a good economic outcome, even if the United States has a bit more of a presence in the Strait, in the Middle East than we did before, at least in that part of the Middle East, as General Slocum pointed out for decades. The United States is at an active military presence in the Middle East. But we're talking here about the naval possibility. And I think markets would be okay with that. the notion of a stepped up U.S. presence there in the Middle East, particularly straight to Formos, in a naval context if the goal is to keep the flow going. The divisions, as we talked about with General Slocum, among the, between the civilian and military leadership in Iran, though, that is the biggest concern because the question is what's going to happen. Who's going to end up calling the shots here? And maybe there's some form of stability that will come about will have to see. Meanwhile, chaos in Congress. As another U.S. representative resigns. Representative Sheila. Sheriffillis McCormick of Florida resigning yesterday moments before the start of a hearing that could have led to a recommendation that she be expelled from Congress, this from the AAP. Scherfellis McCormick was the subject of a more than two-year investigation by the House Ethics Committee, which had determined recently that she violated multiple federal laws and House rules. And support from her own party was increasingly in doubt. While I'm looking here right now, There are four active vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives that have yet to be filled, including one when the previous U.S. representative died and three vacancies when they resigned, including this new instance. But as of April 21st yesterday, according to Ballotpedia, a total of 16 vacancies, four in the U.S. Senate and 12 in the U.S. House have occurred during the 119th Congress, including... three in the U.S. Senate. Now there are questions, of course, with four open seats about the balance of power, the impact on the House and where things go. From here, certainly when you have elections to fill vacancies, that gives an advantage to the winner going into a general election, but not so much because you have just a handful of months.

until the November election. So it's kind of like you're doubling up in that regard. But it's fascinating to see these vacancies, how many are going. It's almost like Colorado. You think about the number of vacancies we've had in the state legislature, multiple in the current legislative crop. And it's frustrating, too, because of how they're replaced and so forth. The frequency is something else. But that's what happens sometimes. There are vacancies. In this case, multiple resignations, Eric Swalwell, just in the last couple weeks as well from California. By the way, Jimmy Vaughn. will be performing at the Blues from the Top Festival in Winter Park the last weekend of June. I think it is that Saturday. Jimmy Vaughn will be the penultimate performance, followed by Kenny Wayne Shepard, who I'm going to be interviewing tomorrow for Friday's show here on K-O-A. So lots to come up with regards to music, and that shows a lot of... fun. And one of those things that's so fun is when you get to travel and go on vacation for a few days, like our own Tina Kotek just did heading back to Jacksonville. And Gina, we don't have much time, but I want you to recap. Quickly, what happened on the plane when you came back? Because we did get listeners sharing and answering your question about whether or not they would say something in a circumstance like this. And I was actually shocked by some of the listener texts that were almost in support of saying something in this situation. But we were kind of asking like, do you speak up when there's a child that's screaming or crying on a plane or someone who's kicking your seat or anything that's bothering you? Do you say something to another passenger? while you're flying. And all this came from my flight from Orlando to Denver when a lady literally spoke up and told this lady whose child was just screaming the entire flight. Toddler screaming the entire flight. And she went, you ruined this flight for everyone. as we were landing. And I was like, why did she even, why speak up now? And a bystander actually got into her, like got into her face and said, this is rude, you're rude. You can't tell this mother, you know, like she's doing everything she can to try to help her toddler in the situation. And I was actually surprised by some of the, I'm the person that I'm like, I wouldn't say anything at all. But some folks said they would. Put my headphones on, stay quiet, try to get through the flight. And we had some people who said, I'm with the lady who complained on this one. If your child or other than a baby, if your toddler can't handle flying, then don't take them on a plane until they can. Which I thought was pretty interesting. Now, in fairness, to the mother in this situation, you don't know. Maybe this is the first time the toddler has flown on the plane since being a toddler and not a baby that, you know, is just going to do normal crying. You don't know necessarily. Yeah, so like going off of that one, Jimmy, it's like this person said, I flew from Barcelona with our eight children, the three youngest, one, two, and three years old on a flight where they got complimented by the passengers on the cruise saying that we didn't know that we had that many kids because they were so well behaved on the way back.

Then she said, go back 18 months ago, they were crying the whole flight. We spent the entire flight in the rear of the bathroom trying to, with a stewardess, like constantly checking up on them and stuff like that. So that's one of those incidents where you're like, okay, you finally got past the crying phase of a newborn. Now you have toddlers that are well behaved on a flight. You never know. You don't know what it's going to be like. You really don't. And you don't know what that mother might be going through or their child or what have you. I'm with you. I probably would not speak up in that circumstance. It's maybe if someone was kicking the seat over and over or something like that, I might at a certain point say something. I don't know, but generally speaking. I'm going to stay away from the conflict. Especially if you can't change the situation, I don't know. That mother knows her child as being a nuisance. And she's probably just as embarrassed and just as frustrated with the situation, but you can only do so much. But I get it. Sometimes you're in those tight quarters and you're just, I mean, I don't know. Not something I would do. Well, I'm glad you made it back safe and sound here with us now. They can pull over the flight to kick her off. So that's good. That's the biggest thing, right? So that way you're able to be here too. not having any sort of delays or anything either.
