Part of the big news story was the gerrymandering in Virginia. This vote 51%, 51.5% by fewer than 90,000 votes. Taking away from Republicans congressional seats, leaving them with one, going from six to five with five Republican seats to 10 to one with, well, one single Republican seat. By the way, exactly what could happen here in Colorado if a proposal is passed to adjust our lines in this state. But then yesterday. Something happened that made things a little more questionable as to what might happen in Virginia.
This from CNBC. A Virginia circuit court judge on Wednesday issued an order blocking the results of a congressional redistricting referendum that could net Democrats, as I said, four extra seats in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026. Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones in a statement vowed to fight the order. issued by Tazewell County Circuit Court Judge Jack Hurley, a Republican appointee, a day after Tuesday's referendum approved the newly drawn districts. My office will immediately file an appeal in the Court of Appeals, Jay Jones said. As I said last night, Virginia voters have spoken. And an activist judge should not have veto power over the people's vote, the attorney general said. We look forward to defending the outcome of last night's election in court. I love how he makes this all about the people's vote when you're essentially depriving people of Virginia of their ability to have representation with at the minimum competitive districts. It's the people's vote, you see. 90,000 votes more, and you are essentially taking away the ability for Virginians. who differ from Democrats, taking them away from the, that you're taking away from them, the opportunity to really have a say. Oh, you've got two somewhat competitive districts. They'll lean Democrat. One solid Republican district. That is rigging the table completely. It's like here in Colorado. We have eight. Congressional seats. Four are honestly, essentially solid Democrat. Two are solid Republican, although even then there are questions as to how well secured both Lauren Boebert and I would say especially Jeff Crank are in their position. But you have two seats that are. Absolutely competitive. Gabe Evans in the 8th Congressional District was just elected in 2024, defeating Edira Caraveo, his predecessor who was the first person elected to represent the new 8th district. And she was a Democrat. So that already flipped. Now it could flip Democrat again. Competitive seat. Third congressional district with Jeff Hurd, also competitive. It has increasingly become less and less solid red over time. Absolutely is one of those seats that the Democrats nationally are looking at and saying, hey, let's go here. Let's target Jeff Hurd and replace him. So that to me is pretty good for a state that leans. Democrat, where you have four solid Democrat seats, okay. Then you've got some competitive seats and you've got some seats that are pretty strongly Republican. That's not bad, especially for a state that has a redistricting commission responsible for this.
That's like Virginia, a redistricting commission responsible for this. Now, I just can't understand the logic that is being presented by advocates of this harsh gerrymandering. I get that it's following Texas, yada, yada, yada. But this is next level. You're leaving one Republican and 10 Democrats. And you're saying, oh, well, the rest of the country is this way, so therefore it's okay for this state to be rigged like this. Here's Abigail Spanberger, the governor of Virginia. Do you worry that states, districts all over the country now will just go tit for tat trying to do this, not every 10 years, but whenever they feel the need? I certainly think that that is a fair concern, which is why absolutely when Democrats take a majority in the House of Representatives, my hope and expectation will be that there will be serious conversations about redistricting reforms and the process by which all 50 states will take on redistricting efforts. But I think essential to the conversation, as I mentioned in Virginia, was our commitment to our bipartisan commission. And so I think it's important that every step along the way, way. We weren't saying, okay, this is the new normal. This isn't the new normal. Well, here's the thing. If you read the opinion from the judge in this case, he says, look, you were misleading to voters in your language that was actually used in passing this proposal. What did the measure actually say? It talked about restoring fairness. It did not say anything in any way, shape, or form about what the reality of the situation actually is, how it would skew the map. And one of the points from the judge here was saying, look, you guys did this wrong and misled the voters of the state of Virginia in going about this, along with several other concerns. I think that this will probably, I don't know, but just my non-legal opinion. So take it for a grain of salt. But. I feel like there's a really good chance, though, that this will, at least in the state of Virginia, be upheld. And then maybe when it gets to the U.S. Supreme Court, it might be undone. We'll have to see what happens. But there's a lot of problems with this Virginia referendum, and they aren't just that there's partisan, hyper-partisan activity, which, by the way, in August the 2025 Abigail Spanberger, we just heard, said, I have no plans to redistrict. Then, lo and behold, here we are months later. Jimmy Saganberger just getting started in for us, Kaminsky on the news with Tina Kotek. Two more days today and tomorrow for Ross KMinsky as he continues to gallivant around Europe. And we are here on K-O-A. Robin Peter to pay Paul. Well, here's the headline of yesterday's editorial for the Gazette, robbing Tabor to pay polls, not pollists, polls as in politicians. Talking about the taxpayers' bill of rights and the significant check that that has been on government growth and spending growth. Politicians and special interests, though, have toiled tirelessly for decades to outflank taper, sometimes cleverly, other times clumsily, in their never-ending attempts to dig deeper into taxpayers' pockets. This year, they're trying something a bit different, outright theft, perpetrated by our own legislature. As reported by the Gazette, state lawmakers have concealed the rip-off in the pending $46.8 billion state budget for 2026-27. At the direction of Governor Jared Polis, they are canceling refunds of $306 million in surplus state tax revenue that Tabor requires the state to return to taxpayers this year and next. And their staffers have advised them against it because it's illegal. But as the editorial rights, and naturally, lawmakers have decided to carry out their heist anyway. They insist their cause is just. Using the extra cash to help cover a huge budget deficit that they had created on their years long spending spending, make no mistake they did. There was a $3.6 billion surplus just a few years ago. They've squandered that to get into these fiscal straits. And they're falling back on the Polish administration's rationale that they're just offsetting the overpayment of previous years, Tabor refunds as the editorial goes on to expose. That is nonsense. But here's the problem. The courts are never in favor of Tabor. They will never, they will always let the legislature slide on in and do their thing.
On fees, we've seen it time and time again. And on this case, if someone were to bring a lawsuit and say, this money belongs in the taxpayer's pockets, I guarantee you. The state courts, getting the state Supreme Court will say, yeah, it's okay. This is a viable, except they'll find some excuse like they always do when it comes to fees. In that case, for the legislature not going to a vote of the people on things that clearly aren't just fees like pay for service. But our taxes disguised as fees to get around taper. The whole thing is a mess. It's a political game and don't fall for it. Now on the other side, what if the Rockies continued to perform well? What if they really did great? What if they rocked? How would that impact? The economy here in Colorado. We're going to talk with DJ Summers of the Common Sense Institute on the other side about that exact question with a new study that they had out. I think last week as we roll along on K-O-A. Hey, everybody, Lady Luck here, and we're celebrating America's 250th birthday. Gosh, if we could just take it easy when, you know, the games that we watch are playing on TV and we think, yeah, they're going to rock. The Rockies are going to rock. So far, though, this season, the Colorado Rockies performing better than last season is in terms of wins, which is very encouraging. But what about the... hypothetical scenario in which the Rockies really rocked where the momentum continues and at some point we're rolling along and seeing win after win. Well, the Common Sense Institute has a fascinating new report. That examines that exact scenario. If the Rockies rocked, what Colorado would gain from a top-ranked baseball franchise? DJ Summers is Director of Communications and Research Operations at the Common Sense Institute and joins us now to talk about this fascinating report. Good morning, DJ. Welcome back to K-OA. Jimmy, good morning. Always good to be here. Always good to have you, sir. So let's start sort of big picture. Why examine this question? And is there something that gets you going? You know what? I feel optimistic about the Rockies. Let's consider the prospect of what if it continues? Why did we examine? A couple of reasons. I mean, right off the back, we are an economics research team and being a bunch of economics nerds that we are. Sports generally is a very fertile territory for us to examine. We do have arguments about stats. We do have arguments about records. We do have arguments about whatever it is shot on goal, average of stuff like that. It's kind of hard to keep a bunch of data analysts away from talking about sports in those terms. So right off the bat, we're kind of just drawn to it anyway. But more than that, This is just a really important time for the Rockies. You know, last year we had a historically losing season, and this year, the Penners Sports Group got minority ownership in the Rockies, and there's a lot of speculation right now. There's a ton of speculation about what this could yield, what might change, how might the Rockies improve on last season's performance. And we wanted to address that. We wanted to just answer the question, well, what if? What if we were a top-ranked team? What if the Rockies used their new position and bounced back from last season and just became one of the best teams in the MLB? What would that mean for Colorado? We're always trying to answer the question. What would X mean for Colorado's economy?
And one of the questions that you guys examine at DJ Summers, that's pretty basic, I think, but important to understand is, okay, so let's say the Rockies have a winning streak. They've got a rocking season. What would that do to attendance numbers at Corsefield? So if the Rockies were at top rank and just assuming that we have a top performing season, about 95 wins, that would generate like an estimated 44% increase in attendance. Rockies fans are loyal. They're going to attend more games if we're on a winning streak. It would mean something along the lines of 1.1 million more visitors. Two course field over the course of a season. Wow. Hey, DJ, it's Gina. So we're looking at a Rockies record right now of 10 and 15. And I'll be honest, I already went to one game this season. I went to the game because I bought a ticket for $8.88 in the lower level. Nice. I can't get a sandwich for that much. I know. Literally my ice cream sandwich was literally more than my ticket at Coarse Fields. But I mean, looking around, it was still fewer and fewer people. It really felt like we're starting to see not the, okay, well, people come, people travel, out-of-towners are excited regardless. They come to the stadium because they love it. It's more we're seeing. just not as many fans attending. So I'm curious about you talk about what we could see with the top ranked and the increase in attendance. Are we going to generate more just the ripple effect of the economy when it comes to hotels, restaurants, everything that we usually see with the traffic around ball arena and the playoffs with the abs and the nuggets that we could see around Coors Field if we have that winning record? Yeah, that's basically exactly our assumption. That's the underlying assumption here. You got to assume that... visitors will come in and watch games at Coorsfield if there is a winning record. Now, generally, anywhere between we just estimated 5 to 25% of fans going to Rockies games for any given game are from outside Colorado. That's an important number because that's new money for Colorado. If somebody travels from Douglas County up to Coorsfield for the night, That's not new money for Colorado. It's just getting shuffled around. It's money that would have gone to one place in the Colorado economy. Now it's just going to another place. So we focused on what that new money is going to generate, that new money from visitors to games. And it would be substantial that the 120,600,000 annual visitors.
That would be coming in and would bring something like $185 million in new direct spending into Colorado's economy during the regular season. That's exactly like you mentioned. That's hotel, that's travel, that's restaurant, drinks, hospitality. Maybe they go do their own personal nightly double-header. They go see a show afterwards somewhere else. But that's... The new economic activity that we're talking about here, people coming in from out of state, visiting Coorsfield, and generating new spend here with money that they brought from their own state of residence. And you likely see a lot of that new spending in and around Coorsfield in the downtown area. But DJ, do we see anything in this report that talks about maybe some of the indirect spending, maybe a growth in jobs or things that we might see that just overall just build up our statewide economy? Oh, yeah. The direct spending numbers are even kind of small potatoes just compared to the impact, the ripple effect that all of this money circulating through the Colorado economy would generate. We include indirect and induced effects. Just from out-of-state visitors, we would have, if we had a first place Rocky's team, something like a boost between 1,7,300 jobs could be up to 815 million more for the state's GDP. That's half a billion dollars worth of personal income more for the state of Colorado. So we're really talking about massive gains here just because we're capturing so much more out-of-state spending that's going to work its way through the economy, generate more jobs, and increase the bottom line all around. Let's get really optimistic here for a moment, DJ Summers of the Common Sense Institute. Let's say the Rockies are really rocking and rolling, having a great season, and then get into the playoffs. How could that impact Colorado's economy? What gains would we see in that scenario? If we got the playoffs, if we did a first place finish, and that would mean up to 11 home playoffs games. That would be an estimated $33 million to $77 million in annual visitor spending. So the direct spending alone would be up to $262 million more just from those home playoffs games. And you've got to assume that playoffs games are probably going to be a bigger draw anyway. We'll probably get a higher share of attendance be from out-of-state visitors. Obviously, we're in early season right now that... $8 game at Gina attended the other day. That's just going to be more sparsely attended. We're at the beginning of the year. But if we were a top-ranked team and we were in one of those early playoffs rounds, not only would it be a packed house at Coorsfield, it would more likely than not just have a greater share of out-of-town people. And they would be bringing more money with them, willing to spend a little bit more. So I...
would estimate that it would be on the upper end of that range, that direct spending range, 70 million to 262 million, probably be on the upper range there. Wow, just 20 seconds, DJ, if you were to encapsulate them, what this report tells us about the economic impact of a team like the Rockies and especially how they perform well, when they perform well, how would you put it in a nutshell? In a nutshell, performance matters. If you do better, people are going to attend more games out-of-state visitors are going to take more of an interest, and that is going to mean big wins for the Colorado economy at large. There you go. Fascinating report. What a fun one, too. DJ Summers Common Sense Institute. Always great to talk with you, sir. Thanks for joining us. Always great to be on. Thank you guys. I saw something fascinating. Well, you sent it to me, and that's how I found out about it. For the Denver Business Journal, that there is a proposal for the pavilions mall downtown to demolish part of it, build a park, and tear down some of the parking lots and replace them with two residential towers. at a massive construction impact in the hundreds of millions of dollars. What the heck are we talking about here? Yeah, so we've been talking about the Denver Pavilions for quite some time. The building of maybe taking those two parking lots and building residential housing is nothing new. The park was the one that really sparked my interest in this business journal report. But so the Denver Pavilions is, if you don't know, it's that area of 16th streets. It's kind of between Glenarm and Tremont. the shops, restaurants, parking. It's got the regal cinema there. And it's struggling. And it's been struggling for quite some time. I mean, I love going to the movies there because they do good movie deals on Tuesdays. But when you look, it's like storefront closed after storefront closed. All of these shops just can't keep going in this like outdoor mall area of the of the pavilions. So they've been talking a lot of just trying to figure out what. can be done. How can revitalize it? What are we looking for with it? And obviously we saw the revitalization of 16th Street Mall, now called 16th Street and some of the improvements they did there. So now there's a discussion of seeing, well, first off, the amount of repairs. They put the price tag at about $5 million in what they would need and just the parking garage repairs and the roof repairs. And I believe if I'm reading this correctly, that's not including what they would want to do of maybe possibly building a public park or demolishing part of it and making way for the two residential towers that are in that parking structure or the parking lots behind the Denver pavilions. But a panel. from outside of the city recommended that the west side of the mall be demolished, make way for actually a green space, some type of public park, and build those residential towers. There's a lot of legal hoops. There's a lot of talk. There's a lot of trying to figure out what can happen next. Everyone knows something needs to be done, but the price tag and the timeline and who is willing to do it and what can be done to do it. I mean, here, Mayor Mike Johnson actually talked a little bit about just the city's need for the space. This was about a year ago. We need this site to be a magnet for Upper Downtown, and we worried without this kind of investment and redevelopment, you could get the opposite. And right now it's not. It certainly is not. It's an area that there's just, I feel like there's more empty spots than there are actual active businesses in the Denver pavilions. So what could happen next? I mean, a park would be pretty cool in the downtown area, but I just don't know if it's something that's really feasible with the deconstruct, like the demolition that they would have to do in order to build that. One of the things that would.
Well, that I wonder about a park in downtown area like that is while there have been improvements to public safety, while we have seen 16th Street Mall become 16th Street and become a nicer area once again in Denver, how safe will people feel and going to a park downtown in that area? Anytime in the next handful of years when there's still, first of all, there's still a stigma for a lot of folks who are outside of Denver proper who don't want to go downtown, who avoid downtown like the plague. Right. Is this going to draw them there or is this going to disincentivize them because they're like, well, maybe there's going to be a tent city there. Right. Maybe there's going to be this or that. Whether that's the goals of the city or not, it's still something folks will consider. I knew that was exactly where you were going with it before you even said it because Ed. That is a big question. I mean, I do want to give listeners maybe just if you haven't been to 16th Street. Maybe just give it a chance if you have event in years, you know, because it is better. It is better. It is significantly better. But yeah, I mean, a public park, are you just asking for an area for a bunch of tents to be set up? You see them right around that RTD area. They have to monitor Civic Center parks so often to make sure people aren't loitering in that area. And they won't because it's the city and county building, the capital right there. They make sure that area is well maintained. But what could it be like if we saw a park in that area? I don't know. I just do know that a lot needs to be done with the Denver pavilions because right now it is just an empty storefront after empty store. No, I agree. I mean, I remember even a decade ago, it was much more vital and vibrant than it is today. And it's a shame to see. But that's sort of what the last several years have brought about. So could something like this revitalize the area? Probably, but to what extent? What would that take? That's what the question really is. And hopefully 734 tomorrow. If all goes well, Mayor Mike Johnson will join us. We can ask him a little bit more about it. Yes, indeed. And we will pick up the conversation on the other side as well here on K-O-A. Gina is round two of the NFL draft, and that means the Broncos will be up. On the clock. Yeah, so the Broncos will be gearing up for the NFL draft. It all gets underway today with our KOA coverage at 6. But for the most part, you won't see much when it comes to the Broncos. We won't really be on that board until tomorrow with that 60 second selection. And KOA's Connor, you've had the opportunity to chat with Broncos insider Benjamin Netanyahu Albright should really put in all caps insider, especially when we're dealing with the NFL draft. You'll hear at the end of this conversation is the expectations of Denver as we're looking to build depth. in the roster. So this is a draft defined by its limited picks. Do you have any insight as to what you think the approach might be? Well, first I'll say that the Broncos have experience with this. I think George Payton's well prepared for it. They've obviously traded first round picks for Russell Wilson. They traded for Sean Payton. Now they've traded for Jaylon Waddle. So they have experience not... drafting guys in that first round. They're prepared for that. As far as the rest of the plan goes, I think it's to be adaptive. You've got a handful of guys you're looking at. You hope that they fall your way, and you kind of watch and hope that that kind of falls your way, and you have multiple picks that you're ready to take your position. If those guys start going off the board, maybe you've got to move up and try and get a guy, that kind of thing. So we'll see. But George Payton certainly plenty of practice with us. And he didn't rule out the possibility in his press conference last week about moving around. How much do you think we'll see that? I do believe they'll move around. He didn't rule out the possibility moving in the first round, although I've been told privately they're not going to get back into the first round. It's just cost prohibitive. in terms of what they'd have to give up. I do believe they'll move around. I could see them moving up in the second round, specifically if two or three players out of this kind of half dozen that they have come off the board, then you've got to make sure you get your guy. So, you know, that's moving around is something I think is very, very possible. And this is a positive thing, right? The Broncos roster is a pretty strong one. What position group rooms do you think they can really make the biggest impact in? And what do you think the approach to those rooms might be? On paper, they might have the strongest roster in the league. Top to bottom, there's not really a weak area per se. There are some things you'd like to have more of. You'd like a little more towel in the tight-end room. You'd like a little bit more stability or reliability, I guess I should say, in the running back room with J.K. Dobbins, having an injury history. And then inside backer, you're a little thin on the depth there to the point where they're going to give Jonah Ellis some snaps at that. I would be very shocked if they did not come away with all three in this draft. Now, that may not be right away, but I do believe they'll come away with an inside lineback or running back at a tight end. And I believe they'll come away with the defensive lineman, and they may come away with the receiver. And then we know how George Payton loves his secondary players, so he probably won't be able to help himself and grab a secondary player as well. It sounded in the press conference like maybe they didn't see a true tight end.
Yeah, and these days there's not a lot of that. Any more you have, you use tackles, you use offensive tackles that are a little light as kind of blocking guys, and you take guys that are just a little too big to be a receiver and kind of make them that off the line, why, which is what Evan Ingram really plays. Evan Ingram was the least in line tight end of any tight in the league last year. And so they just, they used to do that. They looked at Eli Scholar's out of Vanderbilt. He's kind of in the mold of Evan Ingram. But I will say this. They brought Stowers in on a top 30 visit. You get 30 visits per year. George Payton's a general manager for five years, which means they brought 150 players in over the course of his, they've drafted three of them. So typically guys they bring in are not necessarily guys who are looking at drafting. As you talked about, it's kind of hard to project when you get out into the second round and beyond. But are there any particular players that kind of excite you that might be more in the mid-round scheme of things? Yeah. You know, if Jacob Rodriguez somehow falls, the linebacker, inside landmatter at Texas State, somehow falls at mid-second. You sprint to the podium and throw the card with his name on it, the commissioner, as fast as you can. There's some other guys in that range. I think they like Judarian Price if he gets there. It's a running back out of Notre Dame, backed up Jeremiah Love. I think that some of the running backs, be Mike Washington or Arkansas, maybe Nicholas Singleton out of Penn State, another running back. You'd have your eye on there. There's guys out there that I think that you can get value on in those mid-rounds. What specifically are you going to look at, whether it's just a little bit more league-wide outside of this Broncos team or if it's in division? out of this draft. I pay attention to the division. I want to know what the division. And specifically with the Chargers. I feel like they're an ascending team. They revamp their offensive defense. They got the head coaching job in Baltimore. Their offensive coordinator, they let go. They brought in Mike McDaniel, who was the head coach of Miami Dolphins. They also brought in Adam Bill Gates. So a lot of ties there, and I'm kind of interested to see how they remake that offense. So I'll be keeping a real close eye on the Chargers. The Raiders are the Chiefs as well, but really a close eye on the Chargers is watching what they're doing since them in the Bronx. because they're kind of ascendant right now. Give me some insight as to what you're doing. What does your day look like during the draft? Oh, I'm tied to my phone. It's pretty comical. I know our good friends, Ryan Edwards, Dave Logan, they all make fun of me. They call me Diet Schaefter and all this because I'm juggling cell phone. I've got more than one cell phone. I'm juggling, texting people. I pay somebody to be there at the card turn in when they turn the picks in so that I can get the information ahead of everybody else on Twitter and kind of be able to adjust as far as that kind of stuff goes. I'm texting with different. contacts in front offices trying to get ahead of it. You know, one year we sort of helped, I don't want to say we helped facilitate, but we may have given the Broncos some intel, the guy that allowed them to get up and get Javante Williams ahead of another team that wanted him. Well, more of that. Have fun. Or try. That's Broncos insider, Benjamin Netanyahu Albright with K-OA's Connor Shreve. Benjamin Netanyahu is on top of the NFL draft. You don't have to be here. Always. Gina, there's a story that we've been following this week. I find really interesting the discussion is we see students over using cell phones in their classrooms. It's a... Big distraction. And Denver Public Schools is the latest to consider what to do in terms of cell phones. I think there's a state policy in place that says you have to have a policy in your school district for cell phones. And a committee. In DPS, that includes school board members, Marlene De La Rosa, and Kimberly Sia as chairs of the committee, has now backed a bell-to-bell cell phone ban. In other words, you can't have a cell phone in class that you're using from when the bell rings in the morning to when it rings at the end of the day. Of course, the devil's in the details still yet to be determined exactly.
how they'd go about this. And we spoke about it with Mayor Mike Johnston last week, who was a former teacher, former principal. He had all to support in the world about it. He said, I think we do need some type of cell phone ban. But like you mentioned, how you prevent those cell phones from being in the hands of students during the class time is the part that I think a lot of schools are still trying to figure out. I know Ross and I spoke with. Karen, who's a teacher at Aurora Central High School, she works at a school that has a no cell phone use policy in the classrooms. So no phone can be in the classroom at any time. And she had a lot of praise for it. She said parents love it. Teachers love it, obviously. Students are actually abiding by it. But it's that. questioning of, well, what a case of emergency? What if a parent wants to be in contact with their student? What if they just want that access or that opportunity to just have their phone on standby? That's generally why parents give students phones. So it's like, how we decide or how they decide where they're going to put the phones in the situation of a phone policy, that's the question. Yeah, and there's one way you can do it. I know schools do this as STEM Highlands Ranch is one example. Will they'll put something on the wall with like 30 pockets and you're required to put, you have a number and you're required to put your cell phone into that pocket at the start of class and you're not allowed to go grab the cell phone until the end. What I like about that is it gets rid of the phone from the student during the classroom period, but that's still accessible in case of emergencies, which STEM certainly knows very well with what happened in 2019 and the heroism of Kendrick Castillo. And that instance is an example of when a parent would want to know, okay, what's, can I hear anything from my student to know it they're okay or what have you? I think there's sort of a balance there and the eventuality of an emergency, then you have access to the phone. But during class as a general rule, it's set aside and it's not like you're putting it in your backpack. And I think with the DPS policy, teachers, at least with Aurora Central High School, where Karen worked, she said that teachers had the option of deciding what type of cell phone ban, I don't know. tool they want to use in order to make sure that the phones stay away. So you have the option to do the pockets. You have the option of just keeping it in your backpack, keeping in a pencil case, keeping it in your locker. The teachers made the rules. But then I wonder, does that get even more confusing of, okay, I'm going into this classroom. I have to put it in a pocket, or I can keep it on me, or how do you really decide? I know it's just that ongoing back and forth of just like more and more students have these cell phones on. them. This wasn't something they were discussing a decade ago. Now it's something that parents want to make sure that they can contact their student when needed. Without a doubt, of course there's always this alternative 56690 K-OA common spirit health text line. Maybe we go back to pagers. Perfect. Okay, if you want to. I don't know about that. Kids will look at it and go, wait, what? What's this? How does this work?

That song by the Holley's literally spoofing off of credence. I always love the story of that song as we continue on the program. So there's a lot of speculation in question. Questions running around about the 28 Democratic primary, including the possibility that Kamala Harris might run for president again. Here is Mark Cuban, a past guest of mine here on K-O-A, talking about that possibility asked at an event in the last day or two. Would you like to see her run for president again? No. Tell me why not. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. To me again, I don't. I don't care at this point in time. Right now, you know, we've got until 2028. I don't care who the candidates are. I'm not trying to pick a candidate. I'm not trying to promote a candidate. I'm trying to change how f***ed up this health care industry is right now. It's all I'm going about. But you didn't say, when I said if you want to see her run for president again, you didn't say, maybe, I don't know, you said no, right? Because. There's time for someone new or? There's time for a lot of new shit right now, right? And he goes on not to really give a concrete answer, but I think there's a little bit of a feeling from a lot of folks that they're like already, first of all, we're talking about presidential candidates for 2028, but then Kamala Harris running again. Let's talk about this and more, including. the messaging surrounding Iran with our next guest here on KOA. Roshini Rajkumar, she's a crisis specialist, C-suite advisor, mainstage speaker, and podcaster who hosts the Crisis Files podcast, and also has some big anniversaries coming up this year as well that we'll talk about in a bit. She's a longtime guest of mine going back some 12 years and returns here on KOA. Good morning, Roshini. How are you? Good morning, Jimmy. Yes, we go way back. You were just, you know, you were barely out of diapers. He started having me on your shows. Close enough, that's for sure. Rashidi, let me just ask you. We heard a little bit of Mark Cuban there. What about this talk of Kamala Harris 2.0 in 2028? Well, as I say to my clients, no is a complete sentence, and Mark Cuban got it right. It would be the worst thing for the Democrats. It would be the worst thing for the country. And, you know, in my work as an executive advisor, it's really important that executives and, you know, anyone who wants to run for president, you should consider yourself an executive, has to have self-awareness. And when you don't have self-awareness,
That's the beginning of the end. And it's really unusual for me to see that we're even talking about this right now. Not completely stunning, but there's no self-awareness if she thinks that this is in the cards for her or if the Democrats think this is a good idea. For starters, we didn't see her succeed in any level in the primary in 2020. And then in 2024, she didn't. bypassed the primary and was just essentially picked. And that isn't really very good preparation for what is probably going to be a pretty highly contested run among a number of Democrats for 2028, let alone Republicans in their primary. Yeah, House 2 was elected or chosen as the presidential candidate in 2024 was definitely not constitutional in my book. When we look at the history, not only of our Constitution, but the history of electoral politics, conventions, and just common sense, it really went against everything we as Americans and voters should believe in. So to have another round of that. And the other thing, Jimmy, regardless of whether a Republican, Democrat, Independent, there is something to be said about fresh blood. It doesn't have to even be young blood, but fresh blood. And the old guard, I don't care which party we're talking about, needs to exit stage left. I mean, they really brought down the way we look at this amazing system that is the American government. Speaking of the old guard, Rishini Raj Kumar, we have this massive debate going on across the country over redistricting of congressional districts, including most especially gerrymandering. Of course, on Tuesday, we had this vote in Virginia for the state to set aside independent redistricting commission that they have in place and go to a map that is totally jerry-rigged in favor of Democrats from six to five with a one district. advantage for the Democrats to now having it be 10 to 1 with Republicans having only one seat. There's a similar effort here in Colorado. Of course, we've seen Texas on the Republican side and others with these mid-decade redistricting. And among the old guard advocating for some of these efforts that are really, I think, the hyper-partisan is... James Carville, former Clinton advisor, who said the following the other day. If the Democrats were in the presidency and both houses of Congress, I think on day one, they should make Puerto Rico, D.C. estate, and it should expand the Supreme Court to 13. F. It, eat our dust. Expand the Supreme Court to 13 and go ahead and make Puerto Rico and D.C. states. And he goes on to say, don't even run on it. Just don't talk about it and then go ahead and do it. What do you make of this hyper-partisan moment with ideas like that being tossed about in addition to the gerrymandering?
This is very troubling, and we should all find it troubling. Look, I have a lot of respect for James Carville. Way back in my TV career, I interviewed him during one of the 2000 presidential campaign when he was in Iowa for the Iowa caucuses. And, I mean, definitely a brilliant political strategist and political mind. So this really shows that someone like this, who is married to a Republican, by the way, and can actually just speak the truth, usually. This is so hyper-partisan, and it's so anti-American to me. I mean, why are we allowing as voters as citizens? We can't sit back and allow the strategists as well as the politicians to basically destroy our system here in the United States and just measured and reasonable. The system was set up to not be political, and it has become so political. It's really disheartening. And it's disheartened the young people. You know, it's really the fact that civics aren't really taught properly in elementary high school or even college. It is very disheartening, Jimmy. Rashini Raj Kumar, our guest, we'll be going to news here in just a second. But before that, in terms of the hyper-partisan moment, I mean, is there a breaking point here or a point where we correct? Because it just seems like one thing's piling on another, even with the gerrymandering, you have this situation where the state, your different states are saying, oh, well, let's add on, let's add on, just fight fire with fire seemingly with no end in sight. Here's the challenge I'll put out as a crisis strategist to all the politicians, all the leaders out there, people who call themselves leaders. This is not the time to just side with your party for the sake of siding with your party. This is the time to be courageous. and honest, and in some cases creative, and be the voice of reason. That is going to be the voice that wins. In the end, I believe honesty and ethics do win out. So if you can be the candidate or you can be the leader that stands for integrity and against nonsense, I think the American people or the voters of any given state will get behind you. Yeah, I'd certainly like to think that is true. And I tend to believe that. It's just sometimes so discouraging. Roshini Rajkumar, our guest, host of the Crisis Files podcast. We'll pick up the conversation in a moment. I'm Jimmy Sangenberger in for us, Kaminsky on the news with Gina Gondon. Hanging out at the pool is great. Great. She is the host of the Crisis Files podcast, which Roshini, before we get back to topics, I want to talk for a moment because you've got such a fascinating podcast in the Crisis Files, thecrisis Files.com on all the apps, but most especially, of course, the IHeart Radio app. Be sure to listen there. And you've got almost 200 episodes there. And you've also been. In the business of being a crisis specialist, speaker, advisor of C-suite folks, talk to us for a moment about what milestones you have right now. Because one thing that's pretty cool is you have these events, these celebratory events at the Mall of America and Minnesota where you are. Well, last year we recorded the second annual live event at Mall of America in the Rotunda of the Crisis Files, yes, and it was so fun. We did some actual recordings. We also had about 25 past guests who came back and did quick little two-minute talks with me on stage, and it was quite the production. This month, in fact, a week from today, I have the 20-200 party. Jimmy, you know you were invited to it.
Jimmy can't make it. It is not a public event, but there were quite a few people invited. We're expecting a little over 300 from around the country. Amazing. And once again, we'll be at the Mall of America, which is not in the Rotunda, but we'll be in a private space there. And I'm really excited to celebrate 20 years of my business, growing the executive advisory and the crisis strategy. And really, the crisis files, which is now almost four years old, as a podcast, a lot of the content and the inspiration for it. comes from the work I do as a crisis strategist and preventing or helping my clients manage crisis foreseeing issues, kind of trying to fill gaps and avoid risk. But we also have so many current events that, I mean, every day is a crisis waiting to happen in the United States right now. So we're never lost for content. And I'm so excited to share with the world today that Jimmy's going to be back on, and he is going to be our 200th episode, which will drop. in mid-June. So, Jimmy, can't wait to record that with you and have you on for that and showcase you once again on the crisis. Well, I appreciate it. I'm excited and honored to be in that 200th episode. And congratulations. Not only is it 200, but it's been such a wildly successful podcast, and folks can certainly find out why. And I think they get a good taste when we have you on for conversations. And going back to being a... crisis strategist. I mean, there are a few crises as significant as the decision to go to war, to strike another country. I believe with good reason in terms of President Trump striking Iran, but it does seem to be, as we are now heading into a second full, completing a second full month soon of the war in Iran, that... The American people are sort of uncertain as to exactly what's going on to some extent. And that's understandable to a point. But how do you look at how the Trump administration has been managing the messaging here? The messaging has not been managed well. First of all, we're in an era, far unlike 10, 20, 30 years ago, when the U.S. is involved in any kind of war. I mean, we have the insta pictures of it, the insta video of it. And the sad part of that, I mean, there's a lot of good in that, but the hard part of that is there's not a lot of discernment and sometimes context. setting doesn't happen. So you see these images, you see these visuals, and you don't really have all the facts as you take them in over here in the States or even in Europe or Africa or wherever that is keeping an eye on what's happening in Iran for the U.S. So first of all, I would advise, if I were advising the president, to not always be telling us some kind of timeline because he's obviously missed all of his deadline so far that I'm aware of. You can't predict exactly when it's going to end. What you can keep the American people appraised of is when negotiations are happening, if they worked, if they didn't. I don't even know that we need a ton of details about those until you really have something to tell us. So the problem is President Trump seems to need to either post or talk about this on nearly a daily basis. I would highly advise he stopped doing that and that his own administration stops doing that. Let the military leaders.
do their thing, let the negotiators do their thing, and hopefully we'll have some sort of successful resolution. There's not always going to be a win, win, win, win. Iran's never going to love us as a country, and we're never going to love the leadership in Iran, or it's going to be surprising if that happens in my lifetime. But we can't just keep on hearing from the administration that, yep, you know, we've done in two weeks. We've done at the end of the week. That's just nonsense. There's just no way to predict that. Yeah, certainly. And it gives the impression that this is dragging on more and more. Just like 30 seconds for Shini Raj Kumar. One of the things that I do believe the Trump administration has done well is sending out, well, Pete Hegseth at this, Secretary of Defense, a war. But in particular, sending out general... Dan Raisin-Kane, who is the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who does a fantastic job. Let him do the messaging and handle that. I think that would be a great crisis strategy from the messaging standpoint. Absolutely. If you can actually have someone who's a credible general out there, retired or current, that's actually speaking, then you can let the Secretary of War slash Defense, which, by the way, really do think they should go back to Secretary of Defense. Me too. And Pete Hegseth doesn't also need to be doing press conferences all the time. I mean, it's just, the brand ambassadors on this are failing. and we should let the military people do their thing and the most savvy of them. That's one of the signs of a good leader. You know who does the messaging. And not only that. And to have a chairman of the joint chiefs in General Kane, who's as effective as he is, is exactly. That just underscores the reason why that is the right approach. Rosh Kumar, thecrisisphiles.com, and check out the podcast on the Iheart Radio app. Congrats on 20 and 200. And I'm looking forward to being there for the 200th episode of the Crisis Files. Thanks for joining us today. Thank you, Jimmy. Roshkimer joining us. In for the vacationing, Ross Kaminsky, who returns on Monday. By the way, We haven't done yet, Dragon, so I need you on standby here because there's one place to go to reach out to yours truly, 24-7-365 to follow my columns. When the Jimmy Jr. Blues Band is performing, we've got a lot of gigs coming up this summer and more. There's one place to go. It's jimbinger.com. Keep in mind, there's no AI or you in Sangenberger. It's all ease. all the time. Once you know that, Sangenberger is easy. It is easy indeed. A lot of times I'll make a call. Like, hey, I need to reschedule this appointment or whatever. And I go to spell the last name, but they still put in like S-A-N-G with an A. And then they can't find it. And then it takes an extra couple of minutes to get, no, no, it's this spelling. All ease all the time, folks. It is, in fact, easy.
You know what shouldn't be easy is a bailout of a major company, or even more than that, government ownership of a company. Yet here is the headline from Bloomberg yesterday. US could own up to 90% of Spirit Airlines as part of $500 million rescue. The Trump administration is nearing a rescue package for Spirit Airlines. that could give the U.S. government the option to own as much as 90% of the carrier once it emerges from bankruptcy, according to people familiar with the matter. The agreement, which has not been finalized, would offer as much as $500 million in financing in exchange for warrants to purchase up to 90% of the new entity, said the people who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the deal before it's announced. The talks are still fluid and an agreement might not still be reached. It's also unclear what the U.S. stake might ultimately end up being. More from the Wall Street Journal on this, as we see the U.S. government has been acquiring additional stakes in supposedly critical industries. For example, the federal government last year became Intel's largest shareholder, acquiring nearly 10% of the semiconductor manufacturer's shares by converting $8.9 billion. of 2022 Chips Act grants, so that was passed during Biden, into equity. In other words, kind of like these warrants that we're talking about for the spirit bailout, the Chips Act authorized this, and they had all this money that, or the grants that the federal government had, they decided to convert it into equity, ending up with 10% ownership. These are all government-owned stakes in companies that are considered strategically important. Again, the way the journal summarizes what could happen with this agreement if it moves forward with Spirit Airlines is that the U.S. government would loan the embattled discount carrier as much as $500 million receiving in return warrants to take a potential significant stake in spirit, as Bloomberg said, up to 90%. The investment could help keep spirit afloat as it seeks to emerge from its second recent bankruptcy filing. There are two problems with this. The first one is the notion of a major private sector bailout. Now it's the airlines. Back in the 1970s.
It was the auto manufacturers. And there was this auto manufacturer called Chrysler. And at that time, the great late economist, Milton Friedman, on the Phil Donahue show, made this case about bailouts. The government should help save Chrysler. We need three auto companies. The government has been helping to kill Chrysler, but it should not help to save Chrysler. Of course not. This is a private enterprise system. It's often described as a profit system, but that's a misleading label. It's a profit and loss system. And the loss part is even more important than the profit, because it's what gets rid of badly managed, poorly operated companies. What does? Losses. When Chrysler loses money, when Chrysler loses money, it's got to do something. When Amtrak loses money, it goes to Congress and gets a bigger appropriation. The question at issue is, should the people in this country... bail out Chrysler by taking money out of their pockets, not to buy cars which they want to buy, but to pay for whatever has been the cause of the losses at Chrysler. He makes that distinction between Chrysler at the time and what they have to do, the changes they have to make when they're in trouble. And Amtrak, going to Congress and getting a larger appropriation. Well, if the federal government, in its infinite wisdom... Or to gain 90% stake potentially in the company. That's the circumstance. You have a socialized company at that point. That is not just majority. That is almost full ownership of the company. Now, that's not a guarantee from this deal, but it is a possibility that could happen. So you're going next level and then it's, oh, Congress, please help us. But back to the bailout portion. Milton Friedman is exactly right. If a company is struggling and failing, let it go away. Let it die. You might not want to lose that company, but there are a number of other airlines. There are other solutions that you can do. I know there might be an adverse adversity to or opposition to some kind of a merger. But you do have Frontier and Southwest as two other companies that are those lower budget airfares. And to some extent, these are hassles too. Because while you get the benefit of lower price tickets, it's astronomical when you want to check some luggage. That goes for spirit. It's their own fault. They're going through a second bankruptcy. And then here comes President Trump. Here comes the all-knowing, all-powerful federal government saying, we're going to save the day and not allow the market to do its thing. There is something, a concept from Joseph Schumpeter called creative destruction of capitalism. A company will fail and something better will come in
The aftermath. And that's not going to be allowed here. Now we have a number of more airlines than we did auto manufacturers back then. There's Phil Donahue. We should have three auto manufacturers, shouldn't we? How many airlines do we need? Look, we want to have a number of airlines and American airlines. And I don't mean the company American Airlines, though we want them around. I mean American companies that are airlines. But to do so, at the consequence of taxpayer bailouts, oh, it's a loan. Well, you never know what's going to happen. How are they going to make good on that loan? Are we going to have the feds take it over, which brings us to the second big problem? And that is the notion of the federal government controlling the means of production, controlling a company. We are already doing that too much. And it's because the president deems these strategically important industries. What industries is the next Democrat going to say are strategically important and conclude these are significant? These are important. So we're going to take ownership in this company. Where does it end? This is nonsense. Let spirit go into the ether if that's what's going to happen. The federal government should not be doing a bailout, much less taking any potential ownership, let alone 90% ownership, potentially, of the company, any company. This is not a Marxist country. This is free market supposedly, United States of America, with a Republican president who's supposed to care about the private sector in a genuine way. The government's swooping in as the hero, but it is allowing the market to work. If this deal happens, it will be shameful and it will be a low point for this presidency of Donald Trump. And where does he get off doing this unilaterally without Congress? I don't know if he's got some legal authority, but like Ted Cruz said, this is an absolutely terrible idea. We saw the bailouts in the past, like auto bailouts. We saw the bailouts in 2008. This is just worse and worse. Oh my gosh. Now I'm on my high horse. Now I'm all fired up. But it's so frustrating. Jimmy Sangenberger here for Ross Kaminsky, along with Gina Gondack, and fitting for our spirit conversation, listener text coming in, texts coming in via the K-OA Common Spirit Health Text Line 56699 on this possibility through a $500 million loan that may be given to Spirit Airlines that the all-knowing, all-powerful federal government could end up with a 90% stake. And this was a great reminder. JetBlue tried to buy spirit and the government blocked it. The government needs to stay away. which is exactly right, the answer to the question that a listener texted as well saying, didn't the FTC, Federal Trade Commission, stand in the way of a merger that might have prevented this? Yes, JetBlue had a solid deal and the government blocked it. And now here comes swooping in the government that screwed up in the first place, refused to let that happen. And then they're going to come in and say, oh, well, we're going to save the day and we're going to take ownership. And this point from another text really gets at it. Jimmy, the Spirit airline bailout is a bad idea. Spirit is a bad airline model and there is more than enough, there are more than enough good airlines to take advantage of their roots and actually stay in business. Airline tickets like electronics have given better service for less price for better service for years. Yeah, I mean, it's a bad model and the government's going to stand it up. Mark, nonsense. This is why limited government is the way to go. Come on, people. All right, shifting gears. Gina, you've been talking about this. There's this Asian jumping worm, aggressive, invasive species, and it is here in Colorado now, and it gets me going, wow. A little bit of the hebi-jeebies. Yeah, I mean, calling it a jumping worm is terrifying to start. And then adding to the list of just drought conditions and low snowpack and everything. Oh, now you have to worry about a worm in your gardens on top of it all. Water restrictions, you name it. So apparently this originates from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, and it's been threatening local plants. displaces the native earthworm species and degrades the soil quality. It thrashes around. I don't think it jumps, but they say that it makes like these snake-like movements that start to hurt the soil. And then it also eats a lot of the leaf glitter, a lot of the organic matter, so that impacts the soil even more. So I'm going to get a video posted after the show on our K-OA Instagram page of a photo of it, and so you can identify it a little bit more. I don't know how many people are really digging around their garden and identifying worms. But when you have something invasive, maybe you do want to check it out. This is actually the difference between our earthworm and this Asian jumping worm is that thicker band that you see around an earthworm. Usually it's a brown color. But for the Asian jumping worm, it's like a white milky color, that's thicker band around it. So that's how you can tell.
The cherry on top is there's no good method to eradicating them. They have no idea how they're really going to try to get them out of our area now since they're here. They do say that some ways that you could help out is if you put like a clear plastic bag around your soil before you plant to kind of let the sun bake on the soil. That could kill any of the worms, any of the eggs, any of the cocoons, anything that they have or literally just if you identify them, pick them up and. Kill them, which all sounds just... Yeah, especially with the drought conditions that already make planting and everything else more difficult. Now to have this jumping worm. And I had a text or ask, like, oh, how does it impact the soil? And it's because, I guess, the way that it thrashes around and does those little snake-like movements and all the impacts that it has to the soil, then hurts your plants in the long run. Okay. Wow. Beware. The Asian jumping worm. Jimmy Sangenberger, Tina Kotek, we'll pick it up on the other side with former Federal Reserve of Dallas official, Danielle D. We got news this week that sales at retailers posted the biggest gain in March in three years, but the increase was reportedly exaggerated by higher gasoline prices in rising inflation as retail receipts jumped 1.7% last month. After factoring in seasonal patterns in sales, the largest increase since the beginning of 2023. But is there more to that story than meets the eye? In addition, Kevin Warsh is President Trump's nominee to be the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. What might he bring to the Fed, particularly when it comes to two key questions, independence and interest rates? Let's talk about this with Danielle DeMarch. She is the CEO and chief strategist for QI research and the author of the book, Fed Up and Insiders take on why the Federal Reserve is bad for America, having spent nine years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas as an advisor to President Richard W. Fisher, and she's all over the different financial TV outlets and more. Danielle returns to K-O-A. Good morning. Welcome back, Danielle. Good morning, and thank you for having me again. Always good to get your take. Let's start with the retail piece. We saw that massive gains for retailers, but there's also this question about we hear inflation adjusted. We hear nominal when it comes to retail sales. And sometimes those numbers don't seem to make sense. There's a discrepancy between us. Clear this up for us. What's going on in your view with retail sales? So, you know, unlike a lot of economic data that is reported in quote unquote real terms, inflation adjusted terms, GDP, gross domestic product, the largest economic indicator in existence, that is reported in real terms. Retail sales, however, are reported in nominal terms. So retail sales tell us how much money was spent, but they don't adjust that data for inflation. When you do look at, when you do deflate retail sales by the consumer price index for goods, we find out that instead of that great big 1.7% increase, we actually saw. Retail sales fall 0.1% month over month in March. And that is just up 0.1% since last August. So that tells you that we've been flatlining for a very long time because of higher prices. And even when you look at the one prism into services, which is restaurant spending, it's the only aspect of services that's reported in the retail sales report, we find out that it is now 1.4% below in real inflation adjusted terms, its peak from last November.
So in that regard, is it sort of go to the point of what Mark Twain, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics that oftentimes in economics, we see these data points, these numbers. And a politician, for example, can point to it and say, oh, my gosh, look at how wonderful this statistic is or look at how terrible this statistic is. But when you look under the hood a little deeper, a different picture can emerge. Absolutely. And that is exactly the case that we have when it comes to retail sales. It wasn't, but last week that we were saying, oh my gosh, look at the consumer price index. Look at how much it increased by great amounts because of gasoline prices. Well, you know what? That needs to be deflated into the retail sales figures in order to have an apples to apples comparison. Again, Daniel D. Martino Booth, our guest, you have extensive experience with the Federal Reserve. And as a Fed watcher this week, Kevin Warsh has been testifying before Congress, the U.S. Senate for his confirmation as President Trump seeks to appoint him as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. What do you make? of the Kevin Warsh pick. And in part, the big question, and this came up a lot during the hearings the other day, of the Fed's independence from political machinations. Well, obviously, the Fed's independence has been very much under attack. I don't... We've never seen criminal charges placed against a sitting fed chair. And that's exactly what we have. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has effectively been blocking Kevin Warsh's nomination, Kevin Warsh's ability to be to be voted on in the Senate Banking Committee in order for him to progress to a full Senate vote for confirmation. We're looking at, I mean, there are. The Republicans are looking for ways to end this standoff, to end this blockade so that we can get worse into the position because the labor market is very much deteriorating, and that is part of the Fed's mandate, right? They have an inflation mandate, minimize inflation, but they're also supposed to maximize employment. And in any other world, when the Fed was not being... When its independence was not under the attack that it is right now, we would be seeing interest rates being lowered. And so that is why it's so critical to get Kevin Warsh, who is very popular. He did great in his in his confirmation hearing. He was very articulate. He's liked across the aisle, Democrats, Republicans, both. It looks like he would get a very strong confirmation vote on the full Senate floor. But we've got to get past this blockade first. of Thom Tillis allowing his nomination to proceed. So if, let's say, Kevin Warsh does in fact become the next chair of the Federal Reserve, do you expect that he would take that move to reduce interest rates and do you think that is the right move? Yes and yes.
But I also fully respect Kevin Warsh's philosophy that zero interest rate policy, that taking interest rates all the way down to what we call the zero bound has proven to be a mistake. It's stoked speculation in the financial markets. And I think that Worse should be measured in taking interest rates down and stop at a much higher floor. Call it 2% compared to where we are today, which is north of 3%. So I do think we would see easing in monetary policy, but I don't think that we would see kind of the Ben Bernanke, Janet Yellen, let's leave interest rates at the zero bound for a very long time, which ends up benefiting really just the top 1%. Finally, Danielle DiMartino Booth, before we let you go on this question of Kevin Warsh and independence of the Federal Reserve, if President Trump gets his appointee for the last two plus years of his administration on that board. Do you think that that will help to set a better tone for the independence discussion that it would pull back? Because Jerome Powell won't be there, but also because it would be Trump's guy. So even if, let's say, Kevin Warsh is in favor of one or two interest rate cuts and President Trump exerts some pressure and says, hey, I want you to keep reducing, that maybe Worse will be the guy to hold the line on going, for example, below that two percentage point basis that you're talking about. That is certainly what Kevin Warsh said. The word sock puppet came up in his hearings, and he was referencing the fact that he was not going to be a lackey. He was not going to be taking orders from the White House and that he would indeed work to maintain and strengthen Fed Independence. And boy, we've got a lot of people cheering for him to do just that. So we can hope that he's able to hold that line and keep a... a dark line in between Fed independence and any kind of influence via the Treasury Department or the White House. Yeah, I think that's very succinctly and well put. Danielle DeMartino Booth, CEO and Chief Strategist for QI Research, follow her on X at Demartino Booth. Thanks for joining us, as always, on K-O-A. And thank you for having me. We'll wrap up the conversation on the other side. Jimmy Sangenberger in for Ross Kaminsky, along with Tina Kotek on K-W. What's going on, everyone? And we should also... hopefully be having Mayor Mike Johnston on the program. Gina, you were just talking about the possibility of a new Buckees. We already went through the rigamarole with the Larkspur possibility that ended up not coming to fruition. How likely is this one to come about? Do we have any idea? I feel like it's too early to tell. It's either they're doing a really good job hiding what could be happening in El Paso County or it truly is just in such an early phase that. El Paso County gave a statement when they were talking about that land sale that I mentioned in the newscast saying, well, this is a private property transaction between the landowners, private property owners have the right to buy, sell, transfer their property. These private transactions are separate from the county's land use and development process. So Buckees has not submitted an application to El Paso County for development, nor any development application has been submitted for the reference property. However, like you mentioned, Bucky's has been a pretty hot topic in a lot of areas. We already have one on your way, I-25 North heading to Fort Susan Collins. But it's one that a lot of people are concerned about when you're working and building just places that have dozens and dozens of gas stations. on land that is usually for farmers and rural lands and land that they like to keep pretty and not have a giant convenience store in the area. So I don't know what could happen next. I think this Bucky's battle is something that will continue for a while. And then Buckees has its fans and not just folks from Texas. Have you been to a Bucky's? Yes, I have. What's your thoughts? My sister and my fiancee both absolutely love. It's really cool place. It's a quirky place for sure. It is a lot of fun. But having another one, certainly there are a lot of implications for folks in those areas, just as you were saying. There's a lot of cities that are like, bring them in. We'd love to have a buckies in our area. And then other places are like, absolutely not. Don't bring that eyesore to our area. So. It's going to be something that will continue to be talked about for sure. By the way, I love this text coming in. 5-690. Jimmy and Gina, Blues and News. Nice. That's not bad. That is not bad.
