No holds bar. joins us right here on K-O-A and later on Mayor Mike Johnston and so much to talk about beginning with a controversial bill that look I really think there has been an unfortunate lack of information about what the Save America Act would actually do. There is discussion from folks on the right that say, well, voter ID is like an 80-20 issue. It polls so well. Everybody wants photo ID, except for a smaller cohort of mostly Democrats. And that is largely true.

The polling data shows that the vast majority of Americans want and support photo ID, and the arguments against it are, in my opinion, at least, spurious at best. But the Save America Act is far from just about photo ID and what's required and when it's required to show photo ID or to present proof of citizenship. What does it entail? Well, we'll get into it in just a moment. First, the update is from foxnews.com. A cohort of Senate Republicans joined Democrats to sink a late-night attempt to attach a version of voter ID and citizenship verification legislation to the GOP's bill funding federal immigration enforcement. Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky all voted against the modified version of the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility America Act early Thursday morning. Their deflection came during the Senate's Marathon Vote Arama. where lawmakers could force votes on any number of amendments, regardless of whether they mesh with the underlying budget blueprint. Now, keep in mind, the Republicans have stalled this. This is not moved forward in legislation for the Save America Act full on. This is an alternative. This is what was a, let's include this as part of a much bigger bill. The amendment's 48 to 50 failure crystallized what several Republicans had warned for weeks before launching a quasi-floor takeover to debate the Save America Act last month. It didn't have the support among the GOP to pass. It appears the proposal was doomed even if Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota launched an oral filibuster to advance the measure with a simple 50 majority vote. Still, Senator John Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of Louisiana pushed his version of the Save America Act after threatening to hold up the process until Thursday. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledging that his effort may not comport with the strict Senate rules that guide the reconciliation process, known as the bird rule, but countered the critics of his move can't predict the future. Now, had his bill been successful, or his bid here to get this part of a bigger bill. Been successful, it could have instructed the Senate Rules Committee to craft legislation that would require voter ID to register and cast ballots in federal elections. Limit voting to election day only and require that ballots be counted within 36 hours of an election. Now, that would directly impact Colorado if limiting voting to election day entails forbidding early voting. There's no way you can do mail-in voting. Now, if voting is defined as the counting of votes giving more latitude, that's a different story. And I'm not sure what exactly he had in mind, but I would suspect it is you vote on election day. Election day is election day, and that's it. And then it has a requirement that ballots be counted within 36 hours of an election. Now, that also begs the question about,

When you have Yuacava votes, which basically are overseas voters, so for example, military men and women, serving overseas, they get an additional, I think, eight days for their ballot to be received and counted. Would they be disenfranchised? Would that law that Colorado has protecting them be forbidden to be counted under John Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s provision? Those are a few of the hangups that put a little more into the, I guess, add a little bit of an understanding of the wrinkles, so to speak, that come from some of these bills. The Save America Act in and itself would, for example, ban mail and online voter registration in almost all circumstances. The vast, vast majority of Colorado voters, they either are automatically registered to vote. when you get your driver's license, or you register or re-register online. The vast majority of Coloradoans vote online. 43 states allow online voter registration. We are talking far more paperwork, in-person traffic, long lines to register to vote, things like that. There's also the complication about a private right to action. to sue election officials, which frankly in this environment, you could see all kinds of frivolous lawsuits be filed. And for honest mistakes, someone could end up in trouble because they made an actual just plain old honest mistake. Now, there are reasons to have more security in our elections. We need to have voter ID, photo ID, absolutely sensible. And should be required. Colorado, we do not have that. But having the all-knowing, all-powerful federal government come in and say, we are going to micromanage all these aspects of elections. And we're just going to talk about the voter ID part is disingenuous. There is a rationale behind why these Republicans would say, wait a second, this isn't such a good idea to micromanage elections in this way. We're doing more than photo ID here. Unfortunately, that level of honesty and completeness is not part of the completeness is not part of the discussion. We'll see where things go moving forward, but I think the Save America Act is probably done for. And that if they had done photo ID specifically, maybe some citizenship stuff, it would have been a different story. I'm Jimmy Sangenberger, filling in for Ross Kaminsky. Kenny Wayne Shepard is a platinum selling six-time Grammy-nominated guitarist with numerous records who travels all around the world with invigorating live performances, including the Blues from the Top Festival that happens every summer in Winter Park put on by the Grand County Blues Society. It is my favorite music festival to go to, and Kenny Wayne Shepard will be returning the last weekend of June on the 27th to that festival. His new album, Ledbetter Heights, again, a re-record with some more fun as part of that, as we'll talk about, coming out on May 8th. I caught up with Kenny Wayne Shepard yesterday. Here is the first part of that interview. Kenny Wayne Shepard, welcome back, man. Good to talk with you. Hey, man. Thanks for having me. So let's talk first about this album. It is Ledbetter Heights, 1995. You are a teenager wearing your fender strap and playing with that around town in Shreveport, Louisiana. You get your first record there and you're redoing it. Talk to us about this project. Well, you know, so this record, I mean, the new version, it's called the 30th anniversary sessions. And this is, basically, it's our opportunity to not recreate the original record, but not reinvented at the same time. So we basically just brought it into... 26. The biggest change being that on the original first Ledbetter Heights record from 1995, I had a different lead singer in my band. I sang one song on my debut record. And the main reason for that was that when I played guitar, everybody agreed that I played beyond my age. But when I would open my mouth to sing, I sounded like a kid. And that was not the voice that I heard from my music. So that's why it basically took me until my fourth album to really start singing lead vocal. in my band. So we had a different singer on the first record, and after that tour, we parted ways. That's when we met Noah Hunt, who joined my band on the second record, and is still with us today 29 years later. This is the one record in my catalog that Noah was not a part of. And a lot of fans over the years have often wondered, well, what would Ledbetter Heights have sounded like if Noah had been in the band? And so now they're going to get to hear this. And it also simultaneously gave us the opportunity, because we were in the studio re-recording all of these songs. It helped us to get reacquainted with them and all the parts that we needed to relearn in order to do this tour because we're playing every song from the Ledbetter Heights album live in concert for the first time. this year. Even when the record was brand new, we did not play every song from that record. So anyways, it's all cool. It's a great version. There's some little changes here and there, some different guitar solos, maybe a different ending on a song here and there and stuff. But mainly it's just like, hey, this is the Kenny Wayne Shepard band in 2026 doing this record.

How exciting and fun was it to do this record with Noah Hunt, who you've been with for so long throughout most of your professional career, and especially because it is his voice that is most iconic for your band. And increasingly with your old singing, now that you don't sound like a kid anymore, but Noah really has a distinction with you and the work that you do and is just such amazing, an amazing, talented singer. Well, yeah, like I said, I think it's appropriate. I think it helps, like, it closes a gap in the catalog in regards to his voice. And some people will, you know, there's people that love Corey's voice on the original version, and there's a lot of people that love Noah. And Noah has saying, like, deja voodoo, which was the first single, then born with the broken heart, which was the second single. Aberdeen to varying degrees over the years when he first joined the band. We were doing, I'm Leaving You from the Ledbetter Heights album. So there's some of these songs that Noah has performed with us. longer than Corey ever performed them with us, you know. But there's also several that, you know, he never actually performed because they just weren't in the set list. So it was fun. I mean, some of them, you know, he just knocked them right out because he was familiar with them. Other ones took a little bit more of an interesting approach and figuring out how to make these his own. But the end result, like I said, I think it's a great version of the record. And it'll be a new listening experience for those you that are already familiar with this record it's not like listening to the same thing again last year when you were at the paramount theater here in denver you performed a handful of those songs and talked about how you would be doing this led better heights re-record and there was something very exciting about the new fresher take that you have on some of those songs and it kind of is something you've also done as well with your trouble is twenty five re-release a few years years ago where you re-recorded all of the songs. Of course, Noah Hunt was the singer on those. So a little different kind of experience, but what is it for you, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, going back and whether it's in the Trouble Is album or now with Ledbetter Heights, recreating some of these tunes and thinking, oh, you know, maybe we should do this tweak or make that difference to these songs now that you're, in this case, 30 years hence. Well, so the trouble is 25th anniversary record was a slightly different situation. When we started that, I realized, like, we had the whole team back together. You know, the only person that wasn't there was Tommy Shannon on bass from Stevie Ray Vaughn's band because he's been retired from music now from several years. But otherwise, we had every single one of the original players on that record and the producer and everything. So it's like... Wow, we have all the same elements here. We could actually recreate this thing, you know, and show people that we can rock just as hard 25 years later as we did when we were 25 years younger. And so that record, the approach for that one was more of a recreation of the original.

This album from the get-go, it was not going to be the same singer. The only two people on this new version of Ledbetter Heights that were also on the original is myself and Chris Layton on drums from Stevie's band. So we didn't have all the same people involved. So there was never going to be an attempt to recreate the original. So that kind of freed us up to, you know, reinterpret some things a little differently. And so... It's always, but this is my second time I've done an anniversary album. And it's an interesting experience because it puts you in this reflective mode, you know, where you can't help kind of look back over like what's happened over the past 30 years. And it brings up a lot of memories from like the original recording and what that was like when I was 17 years old and making my debut record and a lot of first time experiences that were happening, you know. So it's pretty cool. very proud to live long enough and still be doing this to the point that we can celebrate a 30 year anniversary. Yeah. Six-time nominated Grammy guitarist. And here's the rest of my interview with Kenny Wayne Shepard. One of the things that's always so exciting is when you... have a new album, a new release, and you're sharing it with audiences, it really is one of those experiences that is personal and professional meeting together because you're in that creative process for you. As a musician, as a songwriter, as a performer, what do you most enjoy about the music that you bring and the experiences that audiences enjoy, whether at home listening to the record or seeing you live? Well, I think as a performer, as a songwriter, as a producer, as a guitarist, I mean, all of those things, like, you know, 30 years of doing this now has, I mean, you got 30 years worth of experience and 30 years worth of trial and error to see what works, what connects with people. So I think that in all areas, I feel like I'm a better person. I'm a better musician, entertainer, guitarist, songwriter, producer, all of those things, just if for no other reason from having all the experience that I have doing it. And then still playing live. And when it comes to writing songs and making new records and playing concerts, it's still kind of a trial and error basis, you know, because you go out and you have a set list and you have arrangements and then you think they're going to connect in a certain way. And then you have to wait and see if they actually do. And then maybe you have to make some adjustments originally, like initially in the tour. Or you write a song and you think, you know, everybody's going to love this song. And then you find out that it's actually a different song that they really love more. And so, you know, there's still a discovery process, which is what's so great about creating art and being a musician is that there's always more to learn. Yeah. Kenny Wayne Shepherd, our guest, a few minutes left with you. And I want to ask you about some of your musical influences. It's always fascinating. I had a lot of fun. In February, I interviewed Joe Bonamasa. In March, Warren Haynes, now in April, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, can't do better than that. And all of you have some similar influences on your playing and who got you inspired. Who are the guys that you most point to and say, okay. These are players that you can maybe hear in my playing or that got me going when I first found the guitar.

I mean, I feel like my influences you can hear without a doubt, like you hear Stevie Rayvon, you hear Jimmy Hendricks, you hear BB King, Albert King, Bloody Guy, Albert Susan Collins. I mean, those are like, you know, the fundamentals, like immediately, I believe, recognizable and for good reason, you know, because the way I learned how to play is like I would learn songs by my heroes and I would learn their solos and then I go, okay, well, how do I take that now? alter it a little bit so that I can try and make it my own, you know? And that's kind of the path, I think, for all of us guitarists and musicians. And we're all inspired by other artists. And then it's just trying to figure out, well, how do you take what you learn from them and do it in your own way to help hopefully create your own sound? Now, one thing I want to ask you about, too, you mentioned Chris Layton and you've had the chance in the past to play with Tommy Shannon before he retired. What is it for you, like, playing with such legends, rock and roll hall of famers. I know for Joe Bonamassa, especially at Reese Winans and his band who just retired from touring. But to play with these guys who were with one of your icons in Steve Ray Vaughn, who you did know back when you were younger, what is that experience like, especially to call Chris Layton part of your band on the drums, man? Well, Chris goes all the way back to my first record. So Chris has been on every album except my fourth record. And he's been in my touring band for over 20 years now. And even on the second album, Trouble is we had the whole double trouble. Like we had Tommy and Chris and Reese on the second and third records. And then Reese, he's played with me on and off over the years as well. I mean, it's just been one of those things where... As a kid, when I go back to the kid that was learning how to play guitar in my living room, like, it's still mind-blowing that I see myself in the same room with these guys, making music together, much less, you know, and then calling them my friends and, you know, it's just pretty incredible. I would have never thought that this would happen. The new album out May 8th, Ledbetter Heights. You've got also your return to Colorado at the Blues from the top festival in Winter Park on the 27th of June, and you have played there a number of times. I think I've seen you two or three times there already. Talk to me about playing in the mountains, the Rocky Mountains of Colorado like that. I love it, man. It's so beautiful, and the audience is so receptive. You know, we've done it. I don't even know how many times over the years, but it's one of the things that when I see it on the tour schedule, I'm very much looking forward to it. So when folks go to see a Kenny Wayne Shepherd show, when someone goes and sees you play in concert live, what can they expect? Well, I mean, they can expect, you know, a killer night of blues and rock and roll, basically. You know, it's guitar heavy music. It's 100% American. And there's a lot of different genres that we kind of throw in. I'm from Louisiana. It's like a gumbo, you know. We just throw a little bit of everything in there. And, uh, but blues is the foundation of it all for me. And, um, you know, it's a high energy, exciting evening of blues and rock and roll is basically the best way to sum it up. And finally, with blues as the call.

What is it about the blues that since childhood onto today has really inspired you, driven you, and provided a core basis for your playing on the guitar? And you're singing, too. Yeah, I think it's the emotion that's put into the music, you know, and it's the feeling. And it's guitar-centric music. I mean, generally in blues bands, there's always a featured guitar player. But there's just something about it. You know, because the biggest requirement to play blues authentically is to be able to play it from your heart. And you've got to put that heart and soul into your playing. And so I just think there's something about that that everyone can connect with. Yeah, without a doubt. Virginia's vote is a warning to Colorado. That is the headline of my regular Friday column for the Denver Gazette, naturally discussing a topic we've covered the past couple of days, this vote in Virginia to dramatically gerrymander the state's congressional map going from six Democrat. members of Congress to five Republican making a switch from that to what is most likely going to be 10 Democrats and just one Republican. And it barely passed fewer than 90,000 votes at what I last saw as the count. And with 51.5% of the vote, which is pretty... aligned with the 51% of the voter base in Virginia that are registered Democrats, but it disenfranchises dramatically. Republicans who are the second largest voting group with 30-something percent and unaffiliated voters or independents who, largely speaking, they don't like either party. So they probably don't like a map that is dramatically rigged in favor of one side. Now, this is very relevant to Colorado because we will likely have a ballot measure that is going to be on November's ballot. saying let's do the same thing here in Colorado and effectively have only one Republican member of Congress from Colorado and seven Democrats. That one would very likely be Lauren Boebert. Now, this is largely funded by out-of-state efforts, spearheaded by former Obama Attorney General, Eric Holder, and wannabe speaker of the House, the House minority leader, Hakeem Jeffries, who said the following just yesterday. Our message to Florida Republicans is F around and find out. I should clarify, Florida's next up for consideration in the tit-for-tat war across the country that began with Texas doing mid-decade redistricting and now next Florida as a Republican state. Our message to Florida Republicans is F around and find out. If they go down the road of a dissentish dummymander. The Florida Republicans are going to find themselves in the same situation as Texas Republicans who are on the run right now. And under no circumstances are Texas Republicans picking up five seats. They'll be fortunate if they get two or three. While in California.

We are going to get all five. The Republicans are dummymandering their way into the minority before a single voter's cast because they started this war and we're going to finish it. So if you're so confident that Republicans are only going to get two to three in Texas, but you're getting all five in California. Meaning you'll get that inherent advantage. Why was it such a big deal to have this dramatic switch up where you pick up four seats in Virginia and leave Republicans with just one? And that one district is like 600,000 people and the rest of the state is locked in essentially for Democrats. It doesn't make much sense. Dummymander. I don't know that that is the word, except perhaps for all of the states, for the entire tit for tat. The whole thing is absurd. It never should have started in Texas with the Republicans. And it shouldn't have gotten to this dramatic point next level in Virginia. Colorado needs to stay away. I said 30 or 51% of Virginia voters are registered Democrats. Next is Republican with another 30. percent, essentially, and about 18 percent unaffiliated or independent. Well, in Colorado is different. Over 50 percent of Colorado voters, in fact, just shy of 53 percent are unaffiliated with 25 percent Democrat, 22 and a half percent Republican. This is a state that's very different that does not like either political party. This is a state that like Virginia has. an independent redistricting commission that is supposed to handle redistricting and cut out the partisanship. But this state gives even more, gives even more reason why it's such a terrible idea when we have so many voters that say to hell with both political parties, I don't want to entrench either of them. And yet if this passes, that's what will happen. In Colorado, though, it would be starting in 2028 and Virginia in 26 is one key difference too. Not a good idea. Now, there's always a catch. Now, not the catch with the price. It actually is 30 bucks. I also know because I have bought a couple this morning. But. When you look at the lineup, make sure you're looking at Denver because they say all these artists are on sale and all these big headliners. But they're usually shows that are struggling to sell. So it's usually those shows that they're just trying to add some more people to the mix. I bought yellow card at the junkyard with plain white teas. I bought The Sacred Souls, which is a great artist, but they're a little lower on the list. And then, Dragon, I was thinking baby metal.

Last week when we had our next guest, Denver mayor, Mike Johnston on the program he revealed his first concert at 10 years old was born in the USA with the man himself, Bruce Springsteen. I believe Mr. Mayor, welcome back. That was at Red Rocks. Is that my memory serving me correct? That one was actually a mile high. That was mile high. My memory filled me there. But hey, there you go. You still got the bumper, right? It was great. I was singing along all the way through it. There you go. It's got to be great memories that it brings up every time you hear that song, I bet. So I want to start off with this week's question, which came up earlier in conversation. And I asked Gina and Dragon, and I was surprised by their answer. When you go on an airplane, when you are picking your seat, what is your first choice, your go-to position? And then if that's not available, what's your second option? I'm the window is my first choice. When you don't have folks trying to get up and get out through all the time, you can just be in your own little hole in the corner and no one bothers you. Now, is it middle or aisle for your second choice? If you can't do it. I'll for a second. I avoid middle at all cost. That's why you have children for us to go in the middle. I knew that was going to be the answer. I knew the children would be in the mix for the middle for sure. I said similarly, aisle was my second choice, but Gina, I dragged it surprised it said middle. Middle. Window middle aisle in that order. Apparently would choose middle? If the window seat wasn't available, I will take the middle over the aisle. I don't like people just hitting me, bumping me every time they're walking back and forth and the stewardess and flight attendants. So nope, middle. That is true. Your feet are always at risk of being switched. Exactly. All right, Mr. Mayor, last week you sat in on a panel discussion. They were giving some recommendations for the future of the Denver Pavilion's property. They even recommended demolition, building to residential structures, and even a public plaza as an opportunity. What would you like to see really take place with the Denver Pavilions? We can all admit that something needs to be done with a lot of the vacancies that we see with those storefronts. But what would you like to see it look like? And is a public park realistic for that space? I think it can't be. I think what was most exciting is for folks didn't follow it, this was a group of some of the leading urban designers and architects from around the country who come to Denver because they were so excited by this project as one that could transform the city, and they all said great decision by the city and the Denver Authority to pick up this property. And what's so unique is that we've acquired not just the pavilions, but actually those parking lots behind the pavilions. You know, the backside is just that stark ground wall with the parking lots attached.

That allows us to be able to do things on that backside the rest of the pavilions. I think they have, which I think is great as apartments, to add more actually residential units that would be right there behind the pavilions. And then, you know, you could come out, and then the retail could actually attack to those apartments. So you think about where the second or the third floor of your apartment building now is a retail mall, almost like when you're in a hotel in Vegas, and the second and third floor are all retail shops. And so I like that that could activate. the mall from the backside and could also provide a lot more housing. So we like that idea. And I think their vision was made, say, a singular public space in upper downtown, the way that we have at Union Station and lower downtown, right? The Union Station has great stores, but it also has that wonderful outdoor patio, the fountains, places to hang out. I think their arguments we need a real place like that. And the strange design of pavilions is it's kind of closed in. It feels a little cavernous. And so... The idea was to open it up and have a park in some in the middle, but still have retail and residential. So I think that's one great idea. It's the start of the conversation, but it was an exciting start. Obviously, Mr. Mayor, there's been a revitalization of now 16th Street, formerly 16th Street Mall. And when you look at the pavilions, and let's say hypothetically there's a park or some kind of open space like you're talking about, there has been a perception for folks. And I think this was a... Well earned for at least several years personally, but that downtown is problematic, or at least it was, that you had a lot of crime, you had the homeless encampments and so forth. And so especially people who are outside of Denver who might otherwise come into the city and go downtown, there's been more reservations. Do I really want to go down there? Is it safe? What would you say to... Colorans and Denverites who may be a little resistant to say if there's a park or some open space to coming down to that area, how would you encourage that? And what are you doing proactively in crime or other areas to help encourage and foster more participation down in those areas? Yeah, I would say I understand their frustration because that was true. You know, five years ago when I worked downtown, that was the experience. The key is it is dramatically different now. There are no encampments left in downtown. There are no tents in downtown. Civic Center Park is clear of tents or encampments or homeless activation. And the other public parks we have downtown, we've really clean active. We have a soccer, many soccer field down there. And I think what we've seen is you really can keep those spaces activated. But the safest space of all is a busy space, right? What we want is more people downtown more regularly. And so I'd really invite people to come down and see for themselves. You don't have to take my word for it, come down and see. I think you'll find that downtown looks great. And that's why we're, you know, we're back to 99% of pre-COVID foot traffic for the first time. But one of the suggestions in this report was also that this park could actually be privately managed. It wouldn't have to be a public park. And actually in the same way that Union Station is. Union Station is currently privately managed that space. And so we're open to partnerships where sometimes it's the business's opportunity or responsibility to keep that site active. And we think they often do a good job. So we'd be open to both. But we think if you'll come down town, you will see a massively different story we saw five years ago. Mr. Mayor, another story in the news earlier this week. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling that Denver must now pay $14 million.

for violating the civil rights of a group of protesters who are injured by police during the 2020 George Floyd protests. Your overall reaction to the decision because I know Denver appealed this case and really pushed back and the next steps. I mean, looking at it now, do you feel that Denver inadequately trained its officers at the time or what has changed with police enforcement today from 2020? Yeah, the first thing I would say is we've made massive changes. That was a different administration, a different police chief, different strategies and policies. We've changed all those things. Training. And our officers are doing a fantastic job. If you just look at the proof and the pudding of the last two years, you know, we've had protests almost every single week of the last two and a half years since I've been trained now in how they help keep protesters safe. They support them. Their job is to be there as a support function, not as an intervention. And I haven't had, you know, a single police abuse case from a protest that might. The most important thing is we took that feedback, we made changes. We've, I think, done a great job of keeping the city safe. And, you know, we think these penalties are excessive, I think, to make taxpayers pay $14 or $15 million of taxpayer money for what we think were certainly decisions could have been made better. But I don't think it helps the city in County Dundra to have folks pay $15 million to individuals who were there and may have been exposed to tear gas. So we'll see what our options are going forward. Most important things we've made the changes. Our police are well trained. I think we have the best police department in the country, and we think that they keep the city very safe. But we'll see what our options are going forward. One little follow up on that, Mr. Mayor. Where does this money come from when you award the protesters with the 14 million? It comes from taxpayer dollars out of the general. So we would have to not do something else in the city to pay that settlement. And so we have to figure out what the tradeoffs are and how we would manage that. And that's why. We think we were open to there being a consequence. We think this is excessive. Real quick, Mayor Mike Johnston, I would agree that this is excessive. Do you worry at all, though, that this sends any sort of message to, not the average protester, people who go out to protest, they are doing it for good reasons, the vast, vast majority. But for those who may have more self-interested, intense, shall we say, do you worry that this sends any message to them that, oh, it might be possible that... that if you rabble rouse, you could get a benefit from the police in the sense of a payout like this from the court and the legal proceeding and also any message that this might send it adversely to law enforcement officers.

Yeah, I mean, I think our first obligation is to make sure we could regret training and provide support. We've done that. We've made those changes. I think that's what a well-intentioned lawsuit would have wanted us to do is change the policy to keep people safe. We've done that. I think to take excessive amounts of tax dollars to help add to that remedy, I think it is a bad message to. to the city, to the police force, and I think to other future plaintiffs that if you want to be able to get a big payday, your obligation is just to sue the city. We think what you should do is want to improve this. That's what we've done, and I think that's what we've delivered. Can't let you go yet, Mr. Mayor, without giving your draft pick for the Broncos tonight. Is there anybody your eyeballing that said, if we pick them as our 62nd, as our first pick, 60 second overall, is there anybody you're looking at? I mean, I have to say, I was very happy with our pre-draft pick of Waddle from the Dolphins. I thought we needed a great receiver to add to the receiver core. That was a huge pickup, proven entity who's going to be a huge impact for us. So I think, you know, the draft is always a little bit hit or miss. And so I like the idea that Broncos moving early to get an unknown quantity. It's going to be transformational. But I'd... I'd love to see a tight end. I'd love to still see a big third down running back. But I trust the decisions they made. I'm excited to see what happens tonight. It is very exciting. And I said the only right way to eat an Oreo is not one Oreo. You have to take two Oreos, take off the tops of them. So it's just the cookie part. Eat both of those first. Take the Scott Bottoms that have the filling. Put those two together. Make yourself your own double stuffed Oreo. It is also acceptable to do it if it is already a double stuffed Oreo because the stuffing of the Oreo is the best part and then eat the combined Oreo that way. A quadruple stuffed Oreo. I like that idea. I've done that before with the regular sized Oreos. I don't know if I have with double stuffed. If I haven't, I'm making a big mistake with my life. It gets a little excessive if you don't really like the filling of the Oreo. That's my favorite part. And no dunking in and milk. I'm not a huge milk person. I don't know. Just as is. I will usually do the first part.

Take off the top, eat that. Then I'll scrape off and enjoy the cream and then eat the rest of it. Oh, so you deconstruct all pieces of it. Essentially, I do. All right. Yes. Sometimes I'll eat the bottom part on its own, but just it boosts the cream when you don't have the second part of the cookie. But we need to find out what Dragon thinks. Well, first off, since he's not here and I have to throw him out to the bust, or Ross Kaminsky, he's kind of a commie. He does not like Oreos. He hates the stuff. And if he has to eat an Oreo, he will pretty much only eat the cookie portion. We have to go then 56690, K-O-A common spirit health text line. Keep them common. Listener text. Jimmy and Gina. The cream filling in an Oreo is nothing but industrial waste. I wouldn't touch them. Sounds like a Rossonian when it comes to. Right, Ross may be listening on the plane and texting in with that one right there. Check that number. But for myself, I'm a double stuff guy. Yeah. And I dunk it in milk. I hold it down to the bubble stop. And then I eat. Hold one bite. Delicious. Oh, okay. Now, I don't dip it in milk, but I rarely ever eat cookies without milk. I mean, to me, they go hand in hand as like, first of all, the perfect after school snack, certainly a habit as a kid, but also milk just makes it better. A fresh chocolate chip cookie right out of the oven is probably the only time I will ever drink a glass of milk. Really? That's it. Period. Yeah. You're not, I'm a, we're heavy milk drinkers. Uh-uh. Mm-mm. That's about it. Wow. How about you, Dragon? Yeah, with cookies. Yeah, not so much anymore. All right. I always, I like glass of milk with dinner. Like, it's a regular drink that I just find soothing with almost any meal. Since we're going crazy here, you got whole milk, 1%, 2%, fat three, what is it? You know what? It is, it is, my preference is 1%, but, you know, oftentimes we'll go with 2%. Never any of that skim stuff. Oh, I just, I can't do that. Skim milk is just a milk colored water. Yeah, exactly. Who in the world buys skim milk and waste their money? Might as well just get a glass of water and have like a half gallon of whole milk, pour a little bit of whole milk in the glass, mix it together and boom, you're good. Okay, here's another one. Oreos dipped in coffee. What? 56690. I don't think I could do that one. And last I heard, the cream filling is lard and sugar. Aren't you a vegetarian? Oh, yikes. Don't tell me that. Don't tell me that. I should have done a second. I started reading it out loud and then I was like, isn't she a vegetarian? I think the Oreos are vegetarian and or they may even be vegan. That's what I thought. I'm pretty sure they're not.

There's no large. You can tell me anything. I'm still going to eat them. I think you're in the clear, Gina. You know, don't worry about it. Now, here's the one final text, at least now. Harold with his groovy tune, a little taste. Gotta love it. So I was just looking up and on TV is this ad for Michael Bennett, who's finally starting to really crank out campaign ads. I've been seeing all these wiser ones for Phil Weiser in the gubernatorial primary for the Democrats. And I see Michael Bennett's. And he's got all these clips, including just fresh from this week, as if it was intentional. When Robert F. Kennedy Jr.., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, testified before the U.S. Senate. I believe that was earlier this week. And Bennett challenged him, and it was very forceful. And you see it. In fact, on mute, you can see the forcefulness in his face. They showed some of the times he's on the floor of the U.S. Senate and he's very emphatic. I remember one time several years back before he ran for president in 2020. And he was emphatic on the floor of the Senate about something Ted Cruz did. And I always see these moments and they flash and there's a purpose when they happen. It is always to a T before running for president, before while you're running for governor and you're in the home stretch or what have you. He has these splashes. Otherwise, he's a fairly dry speaker. I've always called him teasingly boring Bennett. But then there he go. And then he gets impassioned and emphatic.

And I always know there's a purpose for that. And you can see it in the ad. It plays well in the ads because normally people don't hear too much about Michael Bennett, but there's a purpose there. And I just found it really interesting. Worth noting, indeed. We'll be fascinating, by the way, to see who ends up winning the Democratic primary. Ergo winning the governorship because whoever wins the Democratic primary will inevitably end up winning the governorship for Colorado. It'll be fascinating to see what happens. Today's editorial in the Denver Gazette and Colorado Springs Gazette, a judge who gets it on illegal immigration. Now, This piece talks about Colorado Native and chief U.S. district judge, Dan Domenico, who has upended the conventional wisdom of plenty of his peers on the federal bench by upholding the continued federal detention of illegal immigrants. Something he's done. In more than one case recently, ruling against detainees' release. As the Gazette editorializes, you'd think it's a given that someone who had entered the country illegally if caught would be held in custody pending deportation. But you'd be wrong. After the new presidential administration took office last year and began its promise crackdown on illegal immigration, activist attorneys inundated Colorado's federal court system with habeas corpus cases demanding the release of those who were detained. The habeas corpus filings challenged the federal government's authority to hold illegal immigrants in confinement without releasing them on bond while their removal proceedings unfold. Now, a lot of these federal judges in Colorado and across the country have obliged that idea, buying into the petitioner's argument that their clients aren't subject to federal authorities' mandatory detention policy. for illegal immigrants, quote, and here's the key term, seeking admission to the country because they are already here. Oh, how clever. Yes, really. Thus, they are eligible for hearings to consider their release as well as for release itself while their federal immigration cases slowly make their way through the courts. So the idea has been from these judges that. seeking admission an illegal immigrant who's here is not seeking admission to the country because they're already here. I don't know. That sounds like somebody breaks into eulches or to Disney World and they get caught. And they say, you can't do anything here. I've already been admitted into the park. And they say, well, you didn't come in here properly. You didn't get your ticket. You got to go. No, but I've already been admitted.

But you didn't do it right? No, but I've been admitted. Well, you might have been seeking admission, but you need to get a ticket to actually be admitted, so you're gone. Sorry, you're out of the park. Maybe expelled from the park permanently. But at the very least, they're not going to consider you admitted to the park just because you're there. You didn't do it right. You didn't do it properly. Similar situation here. You were still seeking admission to actually be here properly. The fact that you admitted yourself illegally by crossing the southern border or overstaying your visa does not change that reality. And as the Gazette editorial points out, the system for adjudicating... deportation cases had been becoming a revolving door over the years. You'd often, especially with the deluge coming in, but oftentimes you would see. And a legal immigrant sent out, released and told, here's your hearing date or here's the next thing that's going to happen and you've got to show up. And they don't oftentimes.

In fact, there is a legal labyrinth that does keep him here, a system that the open borders crowd, this according to the Gazette, knows how to navigate confounding attempts at deportation in many cases. And when judges go along embracing hair-splitting legal pretexts, it further confounds law enforcement. Now, Domenico... He isn't just the only judge saying this and saying we're going to uphold federal law enforcement's authority to detain illegal immigrants even after they've already been here and settled in the United States. The Gazette had reported that New Orleans-based Fifth Circuit and the St. Louis-based Eighth Circuit also recently rejected the predominant view that illegal immigrants should be eligible to walk free. Now, here's the thing. Judge Dan Domenico is a fantastic jurist, really thoughtful. He was the judge last year, and I covered this extensively and talked about it here on K-O-A, who ruled against Denver public schools when they challenged the Trump administration's policies on illegal immigration in protected zones and pointed out, you haven't pointed to it. Any example where there has been a raid on school grounds. And the example you cite isn't relevant and wouldn't have been different under the Biden era policy. And he really broke it down in a bench rolling. This is a judge who knows what he's doing, who's on point, who's sharp, and who's considering the law honestly and with integrity. And I think looking at this case with seeking admission in the right way. And I think Colorado is fortunate to have a jurist of the caliber of Dan Domenico. And not because he is the sole Trump administration appointee. The rest have been appointed by Democrats or by Bush. But because he is a jurist who looks at the law the way that he does.
