A little bit of traffic up north, I-25, including routes like I-76-2-70, but no slowdowns just yet. The east side looks good. Pena's 15 minutes to the airport from I-70, 2-25 wide open at 10 minutes through Aurora, and it's just got to look up in the high country, and roads are in pretty good shape there, too, especially I-70 up to the tunnels, and then beyond that point to veil. Jonathan Steele on KAA 850 a.m and 94.1 FM. 519 on Colorado's morning news. Well, Virginia is going to have a critical election this week, which could determine control of the House during the final two years of President Trump's second term. Democrats are pushing for a referendum, which would enable them to change congressional boundaries and add as many as four new seats. Joining us now on the Common Spirit Health Line is ABC News, political analyst Steve John Roberts. Steve, even if his vote doesn't go the way of the Democrats, how likely is it that they... win-back control of the House during this fall's midterms? Well, it is likely, Keenan, for several reasons. One is that there's a very clear historical trend here. In 50, I'm sorry, in 20 of the last 22 off your elections, the president's party has lost seats. 20 out of 22. So that's not a random number, right? And there are key reasons for that. And Trump is a very good example. A magnetic presidential candidate like Donald Trump or Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama. pull in a lot of marginal voters who get excited and get interested in politics. But during the off years without a big name at the top of the ticket, they don't show up. And so it's a very, very different electorate in off years than in presidential years. And the other problem, and we're seeing this very clearly with President Trump, is that all presidential candidates of both parties always make promises they can't keep. When Donald Trump promised, I'm going to bring prices down. Well, gas nationally is $4.4 this morning. He certainly has not brought prices down. He promised... to keep America out of wars. And now he's threatening, yet again, to blast the Iranian infrastructure if they don't come to the negotiating table. So this is a very clear pattern. And so the Democrats had the advantage going into this election term. And because of that, Trump initiated this. Civil War, really, over redistricting. It's been a very good traditional practice that you only change the boundaries of congressional districts every 10 years after the census and after you measure how people who've come into a state or left a state or moved around. And Trump just changed the whole system by encouraging Republicans in Texas to change the map. And they changed the map in such a way that could increase Republican seats by as many as five. Well, that triggered a backlash among Democrats. So in states like California, Democrats are hitting back, and they're changing the maps. And now Virginia, which has a newly elected Democratic governor and then Democrats in controlling both houses in the state legislature, they've now put on the ballot this referendum.

18:14

that if it passes and it gets through the courts, could give Democrats as many as foreign news seats in Virginia. And look, everybody, Keenan, knows this is a lousy idea that redistricting and gerrymandering have badly contributed to the polarization and partisanship in American politics. When voters in Colorado and everywhere else go to the polls in the fall, more than 90% of the voters. will be voting in congressional districts where the outcome is already settled because of the nature of the congressional boundaries. That is not healthy for democracy. Everybody knows it. But Trump created this war, and now Democrats are firing back. And the likely outcome tomorrow in Virginia is that Democrats will win this fight. But it's going to be close because there are a lot of Democrats who know it's such a terrible idea. Why has redistricting become such a political game? I mean, it seems like the two sides are constantly going back and forth. And you mentioned California and Texas over the past 15 months. We've seen that since the second Trump administration began. But now we're seeing it. Again, as we get deeper and closer to midterms, and it's not the first time this country has gone through that. No, I mean, gerrymandering is an ancient tradition. I mean, the phrase goes back to colonial America, right? People don't realize this. It was named for a governor of Massachusetts named Elbridge Jerry, and the state legislature created a district that looked like a salamander, and some newspaper wag created the term gerrymander, and that's where it comes from. So there's nothing new. This has been happening for 200 years in American politics. But it has gotten much more partisan, and also the tools, the computer tools now are so finely tuned that you can go almost block by block. in terms of creating new districts to favor one party or another. And, you know, it's interesting because both parties, Keenan, are using quotes from Barack Obama in their ads. And Obama has traditionally been a great foe of gerrymandering, and the Republicans are using a clip in their ads of Obama saying, you know, gerrymandering has contributed to partisanship, contributed to polarization.

20:39

He's right about that. And anybody who really thinks about politics knows that this trend is a really lousy idea. And you see it in Washington every day where the House of Representatives is so divided along partisan lines. It's just partisan warfare every day. And there are many reasons for that, including the nature of online information. But this is really, these new districts mean that. A large, large majority of Americans, when they go to the polls in the midterm elections next fall, they're already, in effect, disenfranchised. Their vote does not count because of these voting, because of these boundaries. And that is not a good idea for American democracy. That's ABC News, political analyst, Steve, Robert, Steve. Thanks for joining us. Let's take a look now at the Monday morning drive with Jonathan Steele and K-O-A Traffic Center. Yeah, it looks great. Just looked up in northern Colorado. Areas around Fort Susan Collins, Lublin Greeley looks good there. Here in town, of course, very quiet. We're starting to see a little slowing developing on 85 at 112th. That's ongoing construction. He was able to get refunds from Target stores, making around $34,000 back before he was caught. Augustine is linked with dozens of similar cases in at least four other states. Let's take a look now at the Monday morning commute with Jonathan Steele in the K-O-A traffic center. Yeah, we're starting to see a little bit of a delay with that ramp from southbound 25 to eastbound 270. It's kind of stacking up a little bit there. The ramp itself is jamming, although it's getting busy coming down out of Thornton anyway. So I might want to add a little bit of time there. I-76 westbound to southbound. That ramp also backing up a little bit. Other than that, we've got good buildup, just about anywhere else. Some slowing on I-70 eastbound getting on to Peña, but no delay to the airport at this hour. 225 is about a 10-minute commute through Aurora. Jonathan Steele. K-O-Aaped at D-A-M and 94-1 FM. 548 on Colorado's morning news. Well, the city of Loveland is getting a boost with a Danish company bringing its aerospace business to northern Colorado for expansion into the U.S. Multicut will bring with it new jobs, adding to the already established lineup of aerospace and defense companies choosing to work in Colorado. This is all happening during a challenging time for the state. Businesses leave Colorado under regulatory pressures. I talked with Loveland's economic development director, Marcy Willard, about how this can spur more economic growth for the region. We're really excited to welcome them to the city of Loveland, of course, honored to have them join our community. A great addition to our ecosystem around high tech and innovation. Of course, this is a super opportunity for not only quality jobs that comes with advanced manufacturing, but their private investment.

36:18

And so we see them as a fabulous addition to what we're doing, but also they serve as an asset for us to leverage our continued work in advanced manufacturing. And of course we have a targeted campaign and work right now around aerospace and aviation. So it all comes together to really provide a great. asset and great opportunities for continuing to grow our economy in the city. Exactly what does this do for the economy? How many jobs are created and how much does this actually spur the industry and that aerospace growth in the city of Loveland? Well, we anticipate upwards of 80 jobs. These are jobs that pay higher than the average county wage. We also find that jobs in advanced manufacturing have a great what we call a multiplier effect. So they support many other jobs within the communities. So that's really important. Again, the private investment is valuable to the city, but they also serve as an attraction mechanism for other similar companies, so other aerospace companies, see an ecosystem they can be a part of, but it also brings other supply chain partners. that can serve several of these companies as well. Why is it so important for the state of Colorado to continue to attract these aerospace companies? Obviously, we've seen the news about Space Command and that moving to Huntsville, but still the ability to... retain and attract more of these businesses here in Colorado? And why is this the place that they want to come? Well, we still feel like we have a very fertile environment for business in Colorado. We have one of the top workforce concentrations and level of education in Colorado. And so what we see in many cases is they need the... engineering and high tech and software development, materials development. And we certainly have an amazing ecosystem around workforce and education in Colorado. Obviously, people want to be part of a high tech system. They want to be part of an economy where they have others in their industry to be supported. That could be around ideas. That could be around innovation. materials, shared technologies, shared supply partners. And so once you have an established industry like we do in aerospace in Colorado, then again, that serves as a magnet. We've seen a number of companies leave the state of Colorado. Obviously, Palantir, the biggest name to do so this calendar year. The Colorado Chamber released a report showing, I believe, 98 companies since 2019. Some of these larger businesses taken about 13,000 jobs outside of the state of Colorado because of what they cited as regulation issues.

39:09

What gives you the confidence in the city of Leveland, but more broadly in the state of Colorado, to still have that pretty fertile business environment where the state can attract these companies, even with some of these regulatory issues? Certainly. And certainly it is a concern. We follow all of those issues at the state level. We have local organizations and regional organizations in our area that work to advocate and support. you know a fertile business environment and regulations and policies that support business i think we are starting to see some evidence that we need to pay attention to and we need to make sure that we continue to grow and continue to support our businesses because again we have an outstanding base and that's the best place to build from we don't want to lose that and so it's important that the private sector continues to drive this conversation. It can't just come from government and those of us operating in policy and concerns with our local economies. It needs to come from private stakeholders, and I think they are coming together, and I think their voices are heard. So I think it's promising what we're starting to see, and I think the state will listen because it is incredibly important with the future of the state in this area. As far as Loveland's concerned, we pride ourselves in really individual. support of our businesses and tailoring our tools and resources to what they need to be successful. This can be from workforce development, helping them set up shop as they navigate tenant finish or site development. We pair them with additional state and local resources like tax credits, foreign trade zones and things like that. So certainly we need to work holistically at the state level, but we really pride ourselves. in providing outstanding local resources and that specialized customer service to help the companies that locate in Loveland want to stay and grow within our community. That's City of Loveland Economic Director, Marcy Willard, talking about the new company coming to the city. 558 on Colorado's morning news 420 here and Jimmy Sangenberger filling in for Ross Kaminsky this morning. We asked you on social media this morning. It's 420. Are you celebrating the unofficial holiday? Only three votes coming in so far at KOA, Colorado on X. Let us know on the polls, but two of you saying, no, you're not one saying yes at Civic Center Park. An interesting holiday, obviously Civic Center Park, a big deal to have that whole event and a big concert today. It's the second year that they're charging people to get in $25, obviously 21 and older for that official celebration. Juicy Jerome Powell Wall, Mike Jay Jones will be there performing. And yeah, it should be interesting. Jimmy, anything on 420? Are you a, I guess? Have you ever celebrated 420? No, I have never done so. And now personally, I have no desire to do it. But, you know, it is that day. In fact, it didn't even click until you just said it, that it is the 420. And here we are. I will probably avoid downtown like the plague today. I think that's what's going to happen for me. Well, the traffic would be even worse there.

42:36

Well, there always is, and the stench that goes along with it is a little bit strong. I mean, you always smell it everywhere, but it is especially strong on a day like today downtown when so many people have said, you know what, I'm going to partake. So with that and the traffic altogether, good idea, I think, to avoid downtown if you can. Coming up, Ross on the news with Tina Kotek, Jimmy Sangenberg filling in, and Kenna Dixon filling in for Gina.
