U.S and China talks underway in Paris

This was sort of to set the table and lay the groundwork for a bigger meeting between the Chinese President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump. Jonathan Savage, Fox News, what do we have? What's the latest on this? Yeah, when the leaders of the world... two biggest economies get together, it's going to be important. And that's why they spend a lot of time laying the groundwork, trying to set the agenda, trying to figure out what the positions are going to be in advance so that the leaders don't end up empty-handed. So we wrapped up a couple of days of talks in Paris described as constructive with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the Chinese Vice Premier Helifeng talking about trade and tariffs, investment rules, sanctions and economics. And now, while, yes, these were described as constructive and candid, there is a problem, and that problem is the war in Iran, which President Trump says will stop him from traveling to China as planned, either at the end of this month or beginning of April. He wants to push things back about a month. I was going to ask about the backdrop of the war in Iran. President Trump has asked China for its help in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz. Where does that stand? Yes, he has kind of linked the delay to China helping in the Strait of Hormuz at times, but at the same time people also say, no, this is purely to manage the war. China is in a bit of an odd position here. They buy a lot of Iranian oil. They're able still to get some oil out of Iran, one of the few countries which can. And China has also been a critic of American military action. And yes, President Trump would like Chinese help. to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, but I think China probably is unlikely to do so. So perhaps if these talks are pushed back a month, they can remove that specter of the war in Iran from the talks on the assumption that things have wrapped up by that. So what has China agreed to at this point as far as agricultural purchases? Oh, yeah, I mean, this is important, isn't it? Talk about what they're actually wanting to do. So China has signaled that they are open to buying more agricultural goods from the United States, like beef and poultry and crops. The United States are talking about changing their tariff strategy. Obviously, there are some legal setbacks to that, but the US perhaps is willing to make changes to their...

if they can get a good deal from China. And then they've also talked about putting together a US-China Board of Trade, a parallel investment mechanism so that the money can go both ways successfully. So, you know, what we could see as a result of these talks is a managed competition between the United States and China, which I think for both countries in various administrations has been the goal. Jonathan, what's the status on tariffs right now between the US and China? Yeah, the tariff situation between the US and China is, it's kind of changed a lot, hasn't it, over the last year? We've seen President Trump with one level of tariffs and another level of tariffs. At the moment, the tariffs are in place, and they are not actually having a massive impact on trade. Chinese exports have gone up earlier this year, about 20% in January and February. heavily export-dependent country. So they're growing their exports in places like Europe and Southeast Asia, but they are falling in trade to the United States. So the tariffs and the other measures are having an impact.
