Welcome to the Vince Coakley Radio program. Glad you are here. As we continue a couple of hours of conversation here. And during the course of the next couple of hours, any breaking news that develops will be the first to pass that along to you here on 107.9 FM, WBT Charlotte's FM News Talk. Of course, a lot of the conversation focused on what is taking place in the Middle East. Questions about whether this peace deal is actually the real deal, whether it's going to... lead to a more permanent arrangement and ultimately peace. That's the hope. We will get some perspective and walk through some of the issues that are going on as relates to Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz and some Israel, other things connected to this conversation. But first, I want to begin talking about a case that has also drawn national attention. And that's the case of Arina Zarutka. You know, I'm not saying anything profound to you about the idea that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We're in a place now where the focus of attention is on enforcement, on prosecution, and we've learned the unfortunate news that the man behind the murder of Ukrainian refugee, Arina Zerutska, she's that poor woman stabbed to death on a North Carolina train, has now been found incapable to proceed to trial. The Carlos Brown Jr., the man arrested, charged with first-degree murder, had undergone an evaluation at Central Regional Hospital. Brown was found to be incapable to proceed a report from December 29, 2025. This was several months ago. Brown's public defender asking the court to continue the case, which means delay it. The Meckler County District Attorney's Office agreed the case should be continued. In the court motion.

Brown's attorney claimed the court required capacity hearing cannot take place as long as Brown remains in federal custody. The attorney also argued the court can't order to restore Brown's capacity while he's in federal custody. So according to the court filing, the Mecklamour County DA's office agreed with the case being continued. So who knows how long it's going to be before this is revisited? We'll find out whether he... at any point is capable to proceed to trial. The Brown's also been ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination as part of his federal court case. However, court filings from March 6 indicate the examination isn't completed and the evaluation period has been extended. More evaluation needed. Now... Dealing with issues connected to this case, the broader issues of law enforcement, North Carolina lawmakers passed Irina's law, which aimed to eliminate cashless bail for some violent crimes, and this was signed into law in October by Governor Josh Stein. As you know, Brown was arrested. Earlier in 2025, he was released without bail. Brown's release came despite him having roughly 14 previously criminal charges on his rap sheet. And we're talking about, you know, minor stuff like armed robbery and felony larceny. Absolutely crazy. 14 previous criminal charges. Hmm.

He was also in prison for five years, stemming from a robbery and a deadly weapon charge. A number of people have taken to social media, pointing out if Brown was confident enough to target a woman and murder her, he was confident enough to stay in trial. Yeah. Alley Beth. Stucky in a post on X. If you're competent enough to target a woman and murder her, you're confident enough to stand trial, be found guilty, and receive the death penalty. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller writing in a post on X, the purpose of a system is what it does. I'm so sick of insanity being used as an excuse to let violent animals prey on innocent people, another person wrote. So fine, if you're legit this crazy, that's an admission you cannot be rehabilitated. You can never be trusted in public and you should be put down. Wow. Pretty strong language, isn't it? But I do think there's no question in my mind that this again rekindles thoughts about our justice system. and how we have people like this who were able to tie the system up in knots. And for the poor families, you know, justice is delayed. And you've heard that expression, justice delayed is justice denied. Here is what was broadcast yesterday on the Fox News channel. Will Kane commenting on this case. We're learning to Carlos Brown Jr. The felon charged with the murder of Arena Zarutka on a North Carolina light rail has been found incapable to proceed with trial. The decision comes after a mental health evaluation. So De Carlos Brown has a string of prior charges dating back more than a decade, including a felony, larceny, and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Brown's lawyers are now asking the court to push back a scheduled April 30th hearing for another six months. It's pretty unbelievable. How many times can this man continue to commit crimes and be judged incapable of being accountable? for his crimes. It's not just larceny. It's not just robbery. Now it's cold-blooded murder. Very good question. And this is the question that basically is in the minds of a lot of people. Matt Wash posting on our system in general. And I want to get your thoughts on this at 7045-70179. I'm totally radicalized on the issue of criminal justice. We should increase executions by like a thousand percent. Bring back hard labor. Bring back corporal punishment. Bring back public lashings. Toyota, let's go places. 21 minutes after the hour of 10 o'clock, we're talking about the condition of the Carlos Brown Jr. Over on the WBT text line driven by Liberty View GMC, Deborah writes in, as I recall when this crime first happened, John's mother begged him to keep him locked up. She knew he was dangerous. Jeff says it's interesting to Carlos Brown deemed to be competent enough for early release during the Cooper administration COVID prison break program. Wasn't that just wonderful?

This person raises the question, why does insanity usually manifest into homicide rather than suicide? Fair question. Fair question. To the post I shared with you from Matt Walsh, this person agreeing definitely hard labor. Not sure I agree with public hangings. Boy, that would be kind of over the top, wouldn't it? Kevin writes in, I think that's the correct call on Mr. Brown. He's clearly insane. And that's been for a long time. His family stated as much many times to authorities. He's a classic example of why mental institutions are a necessary evil to keep these types of people out of the general public. Who has failed both Zerutska and Mr. Brown are those that say mental institutions deprive dangerous individuals of their right to freedom. And this is a conversation that is necessary. And there's got to be some urgency about this. Let's go out to a call on the subject from Donna. Good morning and welcome, Donna. Hey. I basically agree. I think the man's name was Kevin that you read the comment from. I mean, I'm not defending this man. He needs to be locked up for the rest of his life, no chance for anything. He's obviously not rehabilitative, but, you know, looking at the crime, like I was telling the screener, he had, I mean, a sane person, even a stone evil, same person. They have a motive. I mean, from what I'm hearing, he didn't try to rob or rape. He didn't know her personally. He did it in a setting where even someone marginably intelligent would know, you're going to get caught. I mean, I don't see how anyone that was not completely psychotic, not that they wouldn't have done a crime like that, but in that manner. And by the way, there are a lot of insane people with mental illness do commit suicide. They don't always just do homicide, you know. What do we do about this issue overall? Because who knows, there may be others out there who are just like Carlos Brown Jr. What do we do in advance before? Yeah, what do we do? How do we stop this? These things won't keep happening. Yeah, how do we do this before, take care of them before we actually see a manifestation like this of a brutal murder? Yeah, well, they need better mental health screening, I guess. I don't know. You know, obviously, it's not what it should be because you have a lot of these things happening, you know. I hear what you're saying there, Donna. I very much appreciate your call. And, again, it's a reminder, just of, you know, every time there's some development in this case, it's very important to... understand our need to get these kinds of issues under control and what i the thing that's in my mind a lot is just this word urgency because most of the time i fail to see especially within the political system a strong sense of urgency about doing something and so we just drift along until the next thing happens

And then we'll express outrage about that. So appreciate the thoughts that you have communicated along the way. This text is saying, Vince, he knew exactly what he was doing. His words afterwards proved it. And, you know, I think, I'm sure I've said this along the way. And this does not excuse the human choices. I think this is another manifestation of something that goes into the lines of the demonic. There's no question about that for me. I think you can so surrender yourself to evil. and cooperate so much in your mind and in your heart that it really does become a demonic manifestation. You know, part of my explanation of that is the description of just how crazy this guy looked as he was committing this crime. And J.T. kind of touches on this because I think he's kind of along the same lines I am on this in his text. We need to clearly delineate mental health and evil. There's a lot of evil in the world, and evil typically just gets looped into the category of mental health. You can't treat or fix evil, J.T. says. And see, I think there is something to that. Rick would like to know what happened to the three strike rule. I don't know that we have that here in North Carolina. There are other communities where they do have three strike laws in place. And again, this is the kind of thing where we've got to come up with some resolution, especially on the mental health subject, because I'm not sure that we've done anything of significance for quite some time. I think it's probably been the 80s since there's been any action taken, not necessarily good in addressing the subject of mental health. I welcome your thoughts if you have additional perspectives on this. Coming up, of course, we'll talk about the ongoing situation between the United States and Iran, and for that matter, other parties, Lebanon, Israel, Where do we actually stand with this peace deal that was worked out to avert the destruction of Iranian civilization? Have we actually seen the beginning of a period of peace in a more long-term way? Or are the Iranians just screwing around with us and playing games? and they still will need to be shown a lesson. That's the question. We'll delve into that as we continue the broadcast on the Vince Coakley radio program.

1036, the Vince Coakley radio program on the text line. Why do the caller not state that he did have a motive? It was racism. He clearly stated, and got that white girl. So not like he wasn't motivated by hate and that does not prove insanity by any means, the texter says. Vince, I feel this is an example of mental health problems as well as crime. We need to do better with mental health care. His own family asked for help prior to this incident. And this, Greg says, in reference what you said about preventing these senseless murders, the accused man requested mental health treatment services from the police department was refused on more than one occasion. This was documented in the Charlotte Observer. Yeah. And we have this from Demi. Yes, it's been a problem for a long time. The Bible tells us right up front. Most people are bad. We're blessed. The world is not more chaotic. The thing is, we do not properly care for the mentally ill in society prescribing drugs without prescribing mandatory observation and counseling by a highly skilled professional is a recipe for disaster. It's a cheap fix instead of providing institutional care. After all the tax fraud is found, eliminated, we can do better for these fragile, vulnerable members of society who are certainly... may be attacked controlled by demons, but do not forget many drugs cause homicidal and suicidal ideation. Yeah, I was just listening to somebody talking about this the other day. All these medications, even for mental health issues, you know, very often you hear, well, they may cause suicidal ideation. Really? And this is supposed to be helpful. But somehow it causes someone to think about killing oneself. Go figure. Let's talk about what's going on with war. Dredge headlines on this ceasefire cracks. Crypto fees for Hormuz. Oil is back up. Iranians fly flags victory. Tehran's leaders emerge stronger. European leaders demand truce with Iran include Lebanon. Did Israel attack to spoil the ceasefire? And the Benjamin Netanyahu corruption trial resumes on Sunday. We've got some audio addressing different aspects of this peace deal. One of them, as you have seen, Israel and Hezbollah. That issue is still floating out there. And make no mistake about it. Hezbollah is Iran. Without support from Iran, Hezbollah is nothing. It's their creation. It's their monster. And they are wholly responsible for what happens there. Now, having said that, JD Vance is leaving the door open to the possibility that there could be some misunderstanding about the relationship that is there. between this peace deal and this conflict that is going on with Israel and Hezbollah. Here is JD Vance on the misunderstanding.

I think this comes from a legitimate misunderstanding. I think the Iranians thought that the ceasefire included Lebanon, and it just didn't. We never made that promise. We never indicated that was going to be the case. What we said is that the ceasefire would be focused on Iran and the ceasefire would be focused on America's allies, both Israel and the Gulf Arab states. Now, that said, the Israelis, as I understand it, again, I'm supposed to get a fuller report when I get on the plane, have actually offered to be, frankly, to... check themselves a little bit in Lebanon because they want to make sure that our negotiation is successful. That's not because that is part of the ceasefire. But look, if Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart in a conflict where they were getting hammered over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that's ultimately their choice. Their choice. Now, one of the other questions along the way, the Gulf, actually the Strait of Hormuz, what is going on there? Because from the beginning, what did we hear? That was supposed to be immediately open, immediately. There are indications that either it's not open or that the Iranians are attempting to charge people in order to get through, like a dollar, a barrel, to get through the strait. What we're hearing out of the White House is that there are a couple of things going on here. One of them that what is offered now by Iran is simply propaganda. They have actually followed through on their promise. And yet at the same time, they are trying to put out... Another piece of information contradicting that to show how tough they are and how defiant they are. Ultimately, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary saying Iran is lying. Well, with respect to the first reporting out of Iranian state media, the president was made aware of those reports before I came to the podium. That is completely unacceptable. And again, this is a case of what they're saying publicly is different privately. We have seen an uptick of traffic in the straight today. And I will reiterate the president's expectation and demand that the strait of her moose is reopened immediately, quickly and safely. That is his expectation. It has been relayed to him privately that that is what's taking place in the... These reports publicly are false. And a similar message echoed out of the vice president, JD Vance, who is communicating that there are signs that change is underway in the Strait of Hormuz. Here is JD Vance on those positive signs. Well, we've already seen an increase in traffic today. Hopefully we'll see an increase in traffic tomorrow. We actually think that we are seeing signs that the straits are starting to reopen. I think you guys have probably seen oil prices have come down. So I think the oil markets, the gas markets are seeing the same thing. But the president's very clear. The deal is a ceasefire, a negotiation. That's what we give. And what they give is that straits are going to be reopened. If we don't see that happening, the president is not going to abide by our terms if the Iranians are not abiding by their terms.

And over on that, WBT text lines driven by Liberty View of GMC. On the situation with DeC. Ray writes in, I can tell you from very personal experience, there is no such thing as a justice system. There is only a system. It's an interesting way to characterize it. On the Iran situation, Eric, Vince Trump didn't say Iran can't charge fees for the straight. He just said, open it. I'm sure the Iranians are the kinds of people who... are very good at finding loopholes, as you describe here. As you know, there's been a lot of debate, and I, at some point, maybe we'll get to this today, maybe not, wanted to address these really kind of civil war that's gone on within the Republican movement. The way I describe it, this is not a conservative movement. I don't even know where conservatives are anymore. That's another conversation for another day. So there have been, you know, you've seen two different groups of people in the camps on the so-called right. You've got the folks who are kind of looking at this judiciously, kind of day by day. They're not sure. They're just kind of weighing things to see what happens, how things play out. And then you've got your hardcore absolutely against war people who feel like Donald Trump has absolutely betrayed them. And then you have people who are the people I call and I've always called the Kool-A drinkers. It doesn't matter with Donald Trump. says or does he's always right never makes mistakes never makes a bad call and therefore if he made a call here his brilliance is ultimately going to be vindicated and they will defend to the very last breath that they offer i think the person i'm about to play audio from fits into that last camp

And it's interesting to me that the people who especially are the strongest cheerleaders, these are the people very often who have direct access to the presidents. They're going down to Mar-Lago and they have really prioritized their relationship with Donald Trump. And to be honest with you, I think what some of these folks, their objectivity is questionable at best. You know, I've already said my piece before about Sean Hannity. Cannot take it. I just can't. It's just so over the top. In fact, I didn't prepare today, but I may get to it. One of Donald Trump's new go-to people. Not really a new to him person, but his positions knew, a controversy brewing about something he had to say the other day. And, I mean, it's kind of along these lines. It's just, it's cringeworthy. The level of hero worship. Nonetheless, one thing that I'm glad at least I'm hearing out of some of these people is a sense of reality. And. You know, one of those people I mentioned who is very much in the Donald Trump camp and will be to the very end, he very much believes that only Donald Trump can execute this. And he's very concerned about what happens after this administration's over with. Because he's not sure, even if this plan is effective during the Trump presidency. Will there be a president strong enough coming behind him who's going to make sure that the conditions of this particular deal are met? I'm referring to talk show host Mark Levin, who I think very accurately describes what we're dealing with with Iran. And the fact these folks are not trustworthy at all. Here is Mark Levin's reality check. This enemy is still the enemy. They're still surviving. Their military may be destroyed, but the communist Chinese will still help them. The Russians will still help them to rebuild. And so this thing's not over. And it's not that I'm a war monger. It's that they're a war monger. It's not that I'm an interventionist. They're an interventionist. I agree with the president. We need to protect our country. We need to protect our homeland. And to pretend that this enemy hasn't killed American soldiers and American citizens is ridiculous. To pretend this enemy is executing its people left and right as we speak. This enemy is shooting missiles into not just Israel. I think some of the Arab countries tonight as well as we've entered into a two-week ceasefire. What is it exactly that we are going to be able to do, that the Europeans were unable to do, that the IAEA wasn't able to do, that prior administrations weren't able to do? Good question. And it's still an open question. Because, and from my perspective, this is not a reflection of Donald Trump or anybody else. This is a very different animal. And by that, I mean...

Most situations you see in the geopolitical framework are situations where people are fighting for survival. I don't see that with this particular brand of fanatics. It's really not even about survival. their survival it's about survival of their ideology and their war plan they are willing to be martyrs for all of the above that's what makes this very different so the rules that might apply to other countries and their desire for self-preservation it's a totally different game here and For that reason, I'm not sure how this one's going to end. You know, one of the most important things that goes on during war, it's information, the dissemination of information. And sometimes the dissemination of information is an act of war in and of itself. And one of the goals sometimes is to prevent the dissemination of information. That is important as well as there are concerns about information getting out. That should not get out. We'll talk about that as we continue the broadcast. Before we get there, our therapeutic Thursday. I guess we can talk about the word aspiration. And I say that as something that many of us, there are things we want to accomplish. And the goal kind of seems out of reach. Sometimes we need incentives along the way to inspire us to become people that we would like to be. In any number of forms, whether it's mentally, physically, spiritually, we have an idea in our heads, you know, this is what I'd like to be or this is what I like to become. This is what I like to look like. And these things can be in our minds. I want to give you another incentive today. I don't have the expectation. You're going to hear this. You're going to think, okay, I'm going to run out now, and I'm going to reach the goal and go after something I've wanted to do for a long time. I hope it's just another thing that kind of pushes you over the edge in a positive way. That this is another reason. to pursue something you probably want. And that's about physical fitness. Physical fitness. Time Investors has this post, Uncomfortable Truth. People respect you more when you are in shape. It's probably something we're not supposed to talk about. But it's true. Don't we, aren't we just naturally attracted to attractive people? That's just reality. And it's really kind of Pollyanna thinking that, oh, we just look at everybody and like and we look at the content of their character. Yeah, right. I mean, and I'm making a confession. I mean, us guys, I mean, let's be real here. We especially are very much driven by what we see. And given a choice, our eyes very often have an enormous effect on our judgment, for better or for worse.

Uncomfortable truth. People respect you more when you are in shape. So what's the further information on this that we need to digest? And I want to look at this more from the perspective of you to inspire you to perhaps make a change that puts you in a better position in how you are received by others. Research in psychology shows that humans form first impressions in seconds and physical fitness is often subconsciously associated with traits like self-control, resilience, consistency, and reliability. Not because muscles make you superior, but because they signal you can delay gratification and stick to hard things. Makes sense, doesn't it? You know, a person who is, has a good physique, didn't get there by staying in bed late every morning and overindulging. It's very true. Self-control, resilience, consistency, reliability, they're all associated with how people got to be that way. In behavioral science, this is linked to the halo effect when one visible trait influences how people perceive your entire character. Your body becomes evidence of your habits. Your habits become evidence of your standards. This isn't about vanity. It's about self-respect. Training your body is one of the most visible ways to prove to yourself that you can keep promises to yourself, stay consistent when motivation disappears, and choose long-term growth over short-term comfort. Does this resonate with you as I share it with you? How many times, I mean, I think of, and I'm just speaking to myself, the startup and stop, start up and stop sometimes as it relates to physical fitness. Oh, I'm going to do this. I'm going to, this is my plan. And you're okay, maybe week one. It's kind of like the, you know, we've discussed this before about New Year's resolutions and, you know, the running joke about New Year's and the gym. how the gym might be packed on the first day of January, and by the second week, those people start to drop off. That's what this is about. It's about keeping promises to yourself, staying consistent when motivation disappears. Well, I don't feel like it today, but you know what? I'm going to do it anyway. Do hard things. Choose long-term growth over short-term comfort. People notice that energy. Not because you look perfect, but because discipline is rare. Take care of your body. It's the only place your mind has to live. This is a, this is one of those. There are times I share items for the segments that I feel very good and confident and bold about because I...

I may be doing in my mind pretty well. This is one of those that continues to dog me. I remember way back in high school, I have a friend, a longtime friend, who worked out all the time. And he would tell me all the time he said, Vince, I really, I really wish I had your build. You've got a great frame to work with. If you ever worked out, You could really do a lot. And I don't have any reason to doubt what he told me. I mean, at the time, I wasn't that motivated. Plus, I was very busy. I think I was working a little bit later on. I was working two jobs. I was in college. I was in the middle of a dating relationship with someone who lived down 15 miles away. One of the workplaces, 30 miles. I mean, it was a crazy season. And I know somebody's listening to the excuses, excuses. But anyway, you get the idea. But as you know, that was years ago. That was in high school. That was in early college, too. All right, sir. Good. I just wanted to say regarding the war in Iran that Trump has already lost the war with Iran, no matter what happens from this point on, Trump and HECF and now JD Vance, they are begging Iran for a peace deal.

Despite claiming that we have won, they've been saying that we've totally devastated Iran, that we've won the war. But if we had actually won the war, wouldn't we be demanding an unconditional surrender from Iran? But no, we're saying what are your conditions for us ending this war? Iran is stronger now in a way than they were before the war even started. They've, you know, they've survived the worst that the United States could do militarily against them. Well, I would say I don't think we've given them the worst. I think there's much more than we could possibly do. But it's been measured and probably measured for a reason. I will say something about this, Greg, that I, you tell me what you think about this. I don't know this for sure. I have a weird suspicion that the United States put the Pakistanis up to pushing forward this deal at the last minute. I just have that feeling that was made to look like Pakistan pushed this when in reality we were the ones looking. for the exit ramp. That's what I'm saying, Vince. They're importing 250,000 barrels of Venezuelan oil to the U.S. every single day. Pretty amazing, huh? According to recent reports, Venezuela's monthly crude oil exports have once again surpassed 1 million barrels a day. The company importing the equivalent of a quarter of a million barrels of Venezuelan oil per day. The BBC detailed the crude oil tanker Minerva Gloria recently docked at a war from the Mississippi Sound with 400,000 barrels of crude oil.
