The WBEN All Local. A daily look at what's happening in Buffalo, Western New York, and the world. I'm Susan Rose. I'm Brian Maserowski. And we are getting brushed by that powerful nor'easter that's crippling travel across the northeast. Heather Kenyon at the National Weather Service is tracking the snow that most of us will be getting. We're going to see periods of light to moderate snow through tonight across Western New York. Really, we're looking at minor accumulations, mainly two to four inches for most parts across Western New York. However, some of the higher terrain could see up to six inches and even localized up to... a foot across the Chautauqua Ridge. However, Interstate 90 looks to see more like two to four inches. And there's yet another disturbance that will be bringing more snow tomorrow night and Wednesday to Western New York. Okay, we'll be watching that, watching it this morning to the message board at the airport full of canceled flights. Places like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, D.C., all areas where flights are just not going this morning. A handful of delays as well. If you're flying, make sure you're checking your app and your ticket for updated flight times. Parts of Mexico are reeling after military forces launched a... daring operation to capture the country's most powerful drug lord known as El Mentiono and ended up killing him. Cartel members unleashed violence in response in at least 20 Mexican states. The 59-year-old El Mentiono was also wanted by the U.S. a Pentagon official telling ABC news that Northcom, a newly established U.S. task force, provided information for the raid. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on X, saying El Mentiona was a top target for the Mexican and United States government as one of the top traffickers of fentanyl into our homeland. All right. It's become a travel. chaotic travel scene for Americans who have been vacationing in parts of Mexico, many are being told right now to shelter in place. Well, two individuals have been identified who may be responsible for the graffiti at the new Highmark Stadium that led to the job being shut down for nearly a week. While construction managers Gilbane Turner say there have been identifications made, no charges have been filed. Meanwhile, WBEN's Jim Fink tells us about the ripple effects. The construction shutdown has had. Construction workers were not the only ones to take a financial hit during last week's four-day pause at the new Highmark Stadium site. Surrounding bars and restaurants also reported a dip in sales during the four-day pause, which came as investigators probed a wave of vandalism at the stadium construction site.
To Kristen Snyder, O'Neill Stadium Inn Manager, said her family's Greg Abbott Road restaurant lost about 20% of its normal weekday business. Snyder said she was very happy to see that the pause was only short-lived. Right, yeah. We were counting on the day of time to be back. We kept asking everyone. Danny South's owner, Mark Ebling, said his restaurant felt the impact. the most on February 16th because that's when the eatery's weekly 10 cent wing night happens. We did see an impact on traffic, that's for sure. Overall by Friday, February 20th, when the work site reopened, business returned to its normal pace. This is Jim Fink for WBEN.com News. Sunday when a man with a gas cannon shotgun drove into the secure perimeter of his Florida estate and was shot and killed by the Secret Service. Fortunately, nobody was in jeopardy inside because of the quick action that was taken by the... deputies and the Secret Service. Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw. Dead is 21-year-old Austin Tucker Carlson Martin from North Carolina. His family reported him missing a few days ago. A relative says the family are supporters of the president. Wayne Cabot, ABC News. While the Bisons announcing yesterday, former president of rich baseball operations, John Dandies, has died Dandies, oversaw the Bisons for nearly two decades. It was also instrumental in the design and construction of the ballpark downtown. As a member of the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame, also held leadership roles all across the city, including at the Exploremore Children's Museum, Shays, the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, ECMC, and visit Buffalo Niagara Dandies. was 72 years old. Next to Milan and women and men in hockey, both bringing home gold medals. And yesterday there was an emotional tribute to hockey player Johnny Goodrow after the U.S. beat Canada to win gold at the Olympics for the first time since 1980. Goudreau, you may remember, was killed along with his brother in a drunk driving crash in New Jersey two years ago. Johnny Goudreau was on a path to be on that Olympic team this year. Team members. brought out his jersey and his kids onto the ice after that big win. His family has been a big part of the national team since his passing. They've hung his jersey in the locker room during national team tournaments. Most importantly for me, Zach Worensky, who was his teammate on the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League, he made the key play and the big pass to Jack Hughes for that overtime game winner, which I thought was a nice bit of poetry and a nice tribute in a way for Johnny Goodrow in that moment. All right. It was just a...
huge moment after the game tears were flowing just about everywhere as people were watching this and johnny goodrose family was in the stands also to be there for it as well i mean great moment capping off One of the best games. Yes, ever. Maybe you've ever seen back and forth, Connor Hullabuck stealing the show, playing great. Right. You have to remind the Canadians, so the goalie's part of the team, too. You know, they keep saying, oh, we were the better team, we were the better team. I don't know. Our goalie was amazing, and he is on the team. So I think we were the better team. And we won the game. Right. Great to, I've been waiting for this for so long. Because really, when you think about it, I mean, you can go back to 2014, the last time the NHL was in the Olympics, and we played Canada. We lost to them in the semifinals. I don't know. There's something about that. I mean, we're all up for it. I remember being out early in the morning again on a weekday, watching the game with a whole bunch of people. But it's really 2010, that gold medal game, Ryan Miller and that. You lose that game. In overtime, again, that... really has stuck with us for so long. It has. And Ryan Miller was standing on his head in that game. You know, it just... Now you're able to get that one more save and able to bring home the gold. And it's going to be quite a scene when Tage Thompson brings it home. Can't believe we have to wait a week. It's a week from tomorrow. The savers are home for their next home game. But that reunion... between fans and the team is going to be amazing. I can't wait for it. Can't wait for it. And new sales numbers are yet more evidence that vinyl records are not a fad. Sales are up for the 19th straight year, up 9% last year, says the research firm Luminate. Maybe not a surprise to Taylor Swift's life of a showgirl dominated, followed by Sabrina Carpenter and Kendrick Lamar. Thriller had a top 10 year last year. No, it's not. Rumors was number six. Even with Apple, Spotify, and YouTube, 15% of rock listening was done on vinyl. And it's not all boomer nostalgia. Millennials had the biggest increase in vinyl purchases last year. Wayne Cabot, ABC News. Thriller in the top 10 last year. Isn't that funny? Still, you know, after all these years, still there. I wonder if that includes. They're talking about vinyl record sales. I'm guessing that's only new. Not all the ones that are in bins all across, record stores everywhere. Yeah, I think you're right. Well, how about this? Doctor who operated on the wrong foot back in 2017. We're learning now, did it again. He can't tell his right foot from his left. Christopher Cruz says details about the second botched surgery. recently disclosed in a report. In 2017, Maine Dr. Adam Darcy amputated a patient's big toe on their left foot instead of the one on their right foot. The State Department of Licensure of Podiatric Medicine reprimanded Darcy, put him on an 18-month probation, and required him to complete six hours of continuing education. But he was still allowed to operate. In 2024, Darcy performed surgery to repair a patient's Achilles tendon, again on the wrong foot. The Portland Press Herald reports the licensure
board recently revoked Darcy's surgical license permanently, but is letting him practice non-surgical medicine. Christopher Cruz, CBS News. I would have pulled the whole thing. Are you kidding? Of the 12 complaints that this board investigated in the last 20 years, two of them involved this doctor. So that's not great. No. I wonder what the six-hour continuing education course is six hours of just trying to learn, you're right from your left. That's got to be tough. Oh, my gosh. I can't blame them, though. My kids do it all the time, putting the right boot on the left foot and vice versa. I mean, they're not out of kindergarten yet, but. Look at the ages here, okay? We're weird to go to medical school. That's what we got now. That is crazy. My friend just had foot surgery. I hope she's listening. On the right one? Yes, she did. Or the left one. Actually, you know what? She actually had foot surgery on both feet just so that she didn't have to do it twice. Oh, well, so did this person, but they didn't want it.

Elizabeth Carey with the AAA of Western and Central New York is with us on the Bison Automotive Liveline this morning. Elizabeth, it seems like a travel nightmare is kind of out there today because of this East Coast blizzard and it's really impacting Buffalo among other cities. Yeah, there's a lot of things going on with travel right now. And the biggest one closest to us is that nor'easter hitting, you know, popular areas like New York City, Boston, places that people travel to regularly from the Buffalo area. So that always puts a snag in travel plans. So if you are set to travel, make sure you're checking over all of your information for your flights. This is when it's such a good idea to have flight updates. sent to you via text from your airline so you can find out exactly what's happening with your individual flight. Well, not just popular to travel to, but I'm guessing, you know, outside of what Atlanta and Chicago, most connections have to run through one of those areas, don't they?
Yeah, a lot of the flights travel, go right through Philly and New York City airports, Boston airports are extremely popular for connections as well. So it definitely is going to disrupt the flights and what happens. But the airline industry is a lot of times there's that domino effect. So you might be going somewhere else, but the flight you're supposed to take didn't get to where it was supposed to be. So a lot of times we're seeing that throughout the industry when something like this happens. Yeah, and even if the storm kind of tapers out later today, these problems could last for days because... Planes just aren't where they should be, right? Right, and that's why the airlines will offer waivers to traveler. So if they have any flexibility, the waivers are out there, they'll say, hey, do you want to move your flight? Do you want to switch to a different time? So travelers should consider that and figure out what's best for their individual travel. You know, we're also wondering with what's happening in Mexico right now, and this really happened at the tail end of a busy getaway week for a lot of people over the February break. If that's having an impact and what you're seeing there, what are you watching for because it is a popular travel destination? It is, and we were seeing record travel for February break, so the kids are going back to school today, but a lot of families were traveling last week to popular places like Puerto Vallarta that's affected by this violence in Mexico. So the civil unrest is creating a lot of issues with the airlines, so they're also issuing flight waivers for different areas in Mexico. And even places like Cancun that weren't impacted directly by the violence, a lot of travelers are being warned to shelter in place. So the State Department has... updated information on their website with a map of Mexico and the different warning levels for different areas. But they're reminding everyone just to avoid areas that have a lot of law enforcement activity and to be aware of your surroundings and seek shelter if you're one of those areas where they're telling people to avoid going out, you know, staying at the resort, whatever that might be, until you can find out what's happening with your flight. If you're scheduled to fly out today or if you were scheduled to fly out yesterday, there were a lot of cancellations. Oh, it's got to be a mess. I mean, if you were hoping to get home, you really have no choice. You just have to stay where you are. You do, and it's a good idea if you're traveling internationally anywhere. to register with the State Department. And you can do that right at the State Department's website because then you can register with the government. So they'll know your location. So if anything did happen, at least they know the whereabouts and the Americans and where they're located. So that's always a good rule of thumb when you're traveling internationally. How often do people do that? Especially I'm thinking if you're going to a resort in Mexico, you're probably not thinking of that. It's a little bit different than, you know, backpacking around a country or something like that.
Right, right, but it never can't hurt, especially when something like this comes up. So it might be something that people don't consider, but it's something that AAA definitely recommends. And following the rules for, you know, whatever the individual area is, whether it's exercising, like, increased caution, but some areas are I do not travel or are different warnings. You have to really take all that into consideration. Well, in either case here, whether you're stuck in Mexico or you can't get out because, you know, you're trying to get to an East Coast city, what is the obligation of the airline to a customer who has a ticket? So there's been a lot of controversy with the airlines recently. So they tried under the Biden administration to get more rights for travelers and to crack down on airlines. But that's kind of changed a little bit. When it's something like weather, that's considered an act of God. So the airlines really aren't required to give you vouchers for, say, a hotel stay or something like that. So you have to consider the individual situations and what's covered. What's a great idea is to have travel insurance, especially if you have travel insurance that's canceled for any reason. That's always going to help you out if you do need to cancel a trip so you don't lose all the money that you put into it. So if you do have travel insurance, sometimes you can buy it right when you're just booking an airline on their website. We have to read through the fine print and see what's covered there. You know, there was this back and forth over the weekend. I guess TSA Precheck is back on now, but it was suspended. The global entry still. suspended as of this morning. When these express lanes go down, how does that impact, you know, maybe in Buffalo, not so much, but getting back or around the country, how does that impact the experience you have just getting through security at the airport? Well, this is why you need to get there early. So AAA is keeping an eye on global entry as well. So everyone, all travelers, whether you're traveling domestically or internationally, get to the airport extra early, that's just going to make sure that you can get through security and get to the gate. So you don't want to be the one that's held up and then you can't get to your gate and the light leaves without you. With the partial government shutdown, there are going to be delays at TSA checkpoint. So people should get to the airport extra early. And especially when you're considering more things like these weather cancellations and everything else, that's when you want to make sure you're plugged in with your airline.
