Hey there, it's Jill Schlesinger. I'm launching a brand new show. It's called Money Moves. Follow and listen wherever you get your podcasts. The WBEN All Local. A daily look at what's happening in Buffalo, Western New York, and the world. I'm Brian Maserowski. We begin taking a look at a new round of peace talks that could take place today in Pakistan. Not clear if Iranian officials plan to even show up, Trey Yinks says more from Tel Aviv. The ceasefire between the United States and Iran is set to end this week. Vice President JD Vance, along with the U.S. delegation, are expected to travel to Islamabad Pakistan later today for those direct talks, though state media has indicated the Iranian delegation has not yet departed for the conversation. Iran's parliament speaker posted to X overnight, saying Trump, by imposing a siege and violating the ceasefire, seeks to turn this negotiating table. in his own imagination into a table of surrender or to justify renewed war mongering. President Trump has indicated he's unlikely to extend this ceasefire. The president also posted a number of times to true social saying, in part, Israel never talked me into the war with Iran. Well, Energy Secretary Chris Wright telling reporters on Sunday gas prices could remain at more than $3 a gallon until next year as a consequence of the war, the president disputing that. But that's the latest from both Washington and the Middle East. Sabres are getting ready for game two against the Bruins tonight. Lindy Ruff talking about moving past Sunday night's win. You look at the game, how physical the game was, you know, how demanding it was late to come back and win the game that emotionally got to decompress. And then understandably so, probably players didn't sleep that well. You know, we're on such a high. And today we just chose to, you know, stay off ice. We'll skate as a team tomorrow and get as much rest as we can and be ready to go. I gotta get that rest. I don't know how you do it after that exciting game one. I'm gonna have to figure out of way. I'm a little worried about the stamina of the team. Well, actually, not the team on the ice, like us as a team in the crowd. How much more do you have left if you were there on Sunday night going back tonight to scream and shout and yell and all of that to bring the energy again? Hopefully a lot. The puck drops tonight at 7.30 will be interesting to see it and it'll be better weather outside if you plan on going down to the watch party at Canal side. Thousands did on Sunday. Could see even more tonight. Here's WBEN's Jim Fink. By all accounts, Sundays' watch parties both at Alumni Plaza and Canal Side were outstanding successes, attracting thousands into downtown Buffalo, and no major issues were reported. In fact, Governor Kathy Hogle hopes the success of the watch parties can serve as a template for attracting other high-profile watch parties and events to Canal Side. So I think this is a great showcase for the city of Buffalo.

Top of mind for the governor is not only more Sabres watch parties, but also ones that focus on this summer's World Cup games and maybe even a Bill's game or two. The point, Kathy Hochul says, when it comes to Canal Side, more is better, so bring it on. Jim, this is just the beginning. This is a new era of energy. And like Lionel Richie said, there's going to be a party tonight. Tonight's Alumni Plaza watch party begins at 4.30 and the Canal Side party begins at 5.30 p.m. This is Jim Fink for WBEN.com News. Remember, Canal Side is where the watch party is in Alumni Plaza. Everyone was gearing up before the game to head in. It's going to be a lot of fun. They kept showing the glimpses of the fans outside during the game. Very cool to see. And I won't forget leaving the game on Sunday night. You know, going out the back down on South Park, walking back toward where we parked, in the middle of the street, of course, because there's still all that construction equipment, you know, parked right there on the sidewalk. Everyone loved that. But you walk out the back, and normally, you know, you make that walk 40 times during the year, and it's all kind of the same. You hear the crowd from Canal side, you know, screaming and yelling and everything. Like there's so much action going on over there. It just sounded different in the playoffs. It was super cool to be there. Let's hope for the same scene. Same results would be nice later on tonight. Starting yesterday, some businesses were able to apply for... tariff refunds. Relief for businesses affected by tariffs could be on the way. Already, businesses have applied to claim more than two-thirds of that money. Last week, the Treasury Secretary was asked how the large payback could affect the U.S. economy. We'll have to see what comes out, and we'll have to see what the companies do with them. Just to be clear, just to be clear, thanks to the Supreme Court, some of this money is going back to China. The government, estimating it collected $166 billion before the tariffs were struck down. It's Armando Garcia with the report. President Trump's nominee to chair the Federal Reserve set to testify today before the Senate Banking Committee. Topping the list of questions from Democrats for Kevin Warsh, will he be an independent voice on policy or an extension of the Trump administration? RSM chief economist Joseph Brouselos. Is he going to be the head of an independent central bank that will set rates in the best interest of the economy? Or is he a member of the Trump administration? He simply can't be both. Christopher Cruz, CBS News, Washington. A Kevin Warsh, a former top official at the Fed, wealthy investor, Democrats on the committee already signaling they'll press him about what they argue is a lack of transparency about some of his financial holdings. Congress and the Trump administration beginning investigations into a group of scientists who were killed or went missing under mysterious circumstances. So at least 11 scientists have disappeared or been killed since June of 2022, including Melissa Casillas. She had a security clearance at Los Alamos National Laboratory and went missing last June and Jason Thomas, who led a chemical biology team. He was found dead this past March. And four of the 11 scientists were prominent researchers from here in L.A.

County, including Monica Riza, an aerospace engineer who vanished in the Angeles National Forest in June of last year. It's Christina Coleman in L.A., a very strange story that we're following here. And it is that time of year. Weather warms up. Start looking for ticks. WBEN's Tom Puckett is more on what we're expecting this season. Rebecca Roll of Lyme, Western New York says there are some misconceptions about deer ticks. She says it's not just warm weather that sends the alert out to her. Every season is tick season. Right now, what's happening is there is definitely an influx of ticks just due to the milder winters and warmer temperatures. So right now we're definitely seeing a pretty big increase of people complaining of attached ticks or finding ticks calling on themselves, their animals, or their children right now. Roll says that's not the only misconception. Another misconception is that this is a wooded area problem. You know, and that is 100% not the case. It's an everywhere problem. We always tell people it's a baseball field problem. It's a soccer complex problem. It's a playground problem. It's a backyard problem. It's a suburb problem. It's an urban problem. To protect yourself, she recommends using Picardin on your skin and permethrin on your gear daily. So really just spray before you play and always do a tech check. If you see a tick on you, Roll says don't throw it away, get it checked. Hear more advice online. Tom Puckett, WBEN.com News. All right, Tom, thank you, something everyone looks for around this time of year. And how about this, a major shakeup in the tech world, Apple CEO. Tim Cook stepping down in September. Undercook, Apple stock, is now with more than 20 times what it was back in 2011. And the company is the top seller of smartphones and tablets in the world. Now it's looking to dominate the laptop market, unveiling a $600 MacBook Neo. Behind that project, Apple's new CEO, John Turnus. It's all the things you want a Mac to be. Yeah, that's an amazing price point. The question now for Ternus is, can he step out of the shadows of the two giants who came before him? Your exclusive WBEN 7 weather forecast. A chilly start your day. We'll have partly sunny skies with highs in the mid-50s this afternoon. Tonight, mostly cloudy with a few rain showers, lows in the mid-40s. We start with clouds and with sunshine on Wednesday with highs back in the 60s. With your exclusive WBEN 7 weather forecast, I'm Chief Meteorologist Aramankowski. Joining us. on the Bison Automotive Liveline, Brian Coziel, who you can hear pre-post game during the intermissions on WGR during the Sabres broadcasts, every game, including that amazing game won. Brian, let's start there. I mean, from before the puck dropped to, of course, how that game ended. Just what a game, what an atmosphere. Good morning. Yeah, it really was. I mean, I think people's expectations and the excitement to build up, many people in the building, many people at CanalSide, many people watching around that, you know, hadn't experienced as they were playoff game before. We're trying to, you know, figure out what was this all about. I'm trying to tell my 16-year-old son, like, hey, this is going to be a unique experience for you to take in. And, boy, for a while there.

9:26

I mean, it lived up to it, but then for a while there, that frustration of, oh, come on here. Is this going to be one of those Buffalo sports things where the buildup is so high, and then the result doesn't deliver, not having a goal and not having a reason to really, really kick in the celebration mode within the building or wherever people were taking in the game. And then obviously all of a sudden it slipped. They figured out a way to get to Jeremy Swayman. The Boston defense got a little worn down there I thought in the third period. They did a really nice job of. keeping on that pressure, and then obviously the roof came off there with those three goals in that quick span to go from an O2 deficit to a 3-2 lead and eventually to win the game. That was really, really something special. One of the best periods to take in, I think, that we've seen in quite some time. It was absolutely incredible. And now, to me, it's the big question is, Game two. This team's proved they can win big games, they can win emotional games in the past, being able to pull that out. I don't think should surprise anybody in game one. To me, the question is, can you do it again? I mean, can you reach that level of intensity every single night you're having one of these big games? Yeah, I think, I mean, asking that to do that over a series is tough to do. And that's why I think, you know, winning in the playoff in the NHL is so difficult because you do have to ramp it up on another night. I think. really, I don't want to underestimate the energy that the crowd gives to the team. Every single player that spoke after the game, even Lindy Ruff said that the crowd is really, really energizing to them, and that it really, really keeps that intensity up. Obviously, they know what to take, so it's not as though that they're going to be giving any sort of left effort or slacking or anything, but man, that crowd can really, really keep that intensity going. They want it for the fans. They want it for each other. They want it for their head coach. I mean, there's so many reasons to them to be motivated right now, but there's so many of these guys that are experienced the playoffs for the first time. I thought what Paige Thompson said the other guy was really, really good. He talked about experience the game for the first time and, you know, facing adversity, facing pressure. And he's like, look, we've faced adversity for eight years of not being good. And that internal pressure of wondering, of not performing well, he said was getting to him. And he said, you know, I got plenty of motivation to play well. He's like, I don't want to have to go any part of going back to what that was. So I thought that was kind of interesting, too, that he took. the fact that he doesn't want to have any thought of returning to what it used to be like. And he's like, we want to stay here. So I thought that was an interesting comment from Thompson. And obviously he's experienced a lot of tough times here during his tenure in Buffalo. Yeah, I thought it was really nice to hear from him. And I mean, what about the game he had to kind of take it over? You want your best players to be your best players. And he proved it the other night to the first goal.

12:35

is just amazing work to be able to almost will that puck in from behind the net. Yeah, if you notice all these goals here too, all of a sudden it got back to Buffalo getting to the middle of the ice and around the net and winning battles around the net. Those are kind of where all those occurred. Obviously, the one you just mentioned is kind of how it all started with Thompson, him and Krebs behind the net, and then he comes away with it and does that quick wraparound. And man, you could see the sigh of relief from Thompson and from the entire team of, okay, we finally got through past this goaltender. I thought the Sabres were the better team. through the first 52 minutes, even though the scoreboard said two nothing, I know that probably would seem odd to say. But I thought, you know, if you look at the shots of the shot attempts and the possession time and even the high danger chances, all some of the statistics that we look at here to determine maybe who is the better team. And the Sabres had the better of play, I thought, in all those areas. But Jeremy Swainman was really, really good. But now all of a sudden, you know, they break through. And then the next goal, Alex Puck with some amazing work behind the net to allow Thompson to get that puck and get that look and he buries it. I mean, Thompson, obviously, his skill has a lot to do with that, too, the fact that he's able to have that quick shot and that quick release, and then it's on. And then Quinn makes a beautiful feed to Samuelson. I was even talking about this on post game the other night. I mean, Samuelson's a huge reason why the staviors are where they are, why they won the division. I mean, that's a play. Probably Matea Samuelson in previous season doesn't. make because his offensive confidence right now is such at a high. He might have just thought, hey, I'll stay back at the blue line. He sees the opening. He jumps in. Quinn finds him. And then, you know, his shot this year, it's been a thing of beauty. And he even said, I'm posting. He's like, look, I was looking in that top corner because I saw a little space and I tried to get it there. And obviously that's where it went. And so, I mean, he is thinking cute mentality. He is thinking I can score here in a big pressure moment. And This team has, as you said, is not backed down in these pressure spots. It is such a refreshing change from the last decade plus. And we've talked about this team not being able to handle pressure. Wilts in big moments, not handle intensity or, you know, make the wrong play or get beat when the pressure's on. Now it seems any time that there is like this moment where they need to step through, somebody's always doing it. It's amazing to watch. Anything different you're expecting today? What should we be looking out for? I think the energy is going to be just as good in the building because I think you're going to have a lot of people that are going to be there for the first time now. They have seen what the scene is like. So in terms of the energy in the building, I think it's going to be great because you're having a lot of people go to their first playoff game of this. In terms of what Buffalo does, I wouldn't change much in terms of the game plan. I think what eventually happened that allowed for that third period was that Buffalo really, really was physical. They got back on Boston's defense. And they wore them down and they got tired. If you look at all those goals, it was lower reacting Boston players against quicker reacting Buffalo players. And I would do the same thing. Get pucks in deep. Get on their defense.

15:38

Buffalo was so physical. Boston coach Marco Thurm talked about being bigger and stronger, and they were going to bring it. I mean, at the end of the night, Alex Huck has a career high, 10 hits, Mastien Samuelson had nine. I mean, I would continue that physical play. Get the puck in, use your speed, get in on the Boston defense, and win those battles that they had been winning. The only thing that I think they had to improve upon is there was a lot of maybe more perimeter shooting is get it more toward the middle, get those bodies more toward the middle, and I think that's really able to. to beat Twainman, but I got to think this team has been waiting forever to get into this spot. So I don't expect any sort of maybe let down tonight. You know, as far as Boston goes, I mean, they got to be a little deflated. They played about exactly as they wanted to, and their goaltender played outstanding. I mean, if Quayman is even just off at all a little in any capacity, I don't see any way that Boston to win. They need their goaltender to play amazing. And they did. He did for the other night. Eventually, Buffalo broke through. But I think Quayman's got to be excellent again for Boston to have a chance. All right. We can't wait for tonight. Puck drops at 730. Brian, thanks so much. You'll hear him pregame, post game, and the intermissions down the dial on WGR. That's the WBEN All Local.
