21 segmentsWell, good evening now at 6. It is a first alert weather day. South Central, heavy snow winds, a wintry mix as we head into the weekend. An avalanche along Haynes Highway near Click 1 has been reported, as well as Tane Road and Juneau, closing amid avalanche hazards. Anchorage Police also urging people to use caution on the seward and Glen Highways. All right, this was the scene right here. You're looking at it not too long ago on the Glen Highway, showing backups all the way to Merrill Field. Since midnight, Anchorage Police have reported 46 crashes without injury, 20 others with injury. Also, 23 vehicles in distress. Right now, we want to get right over to Chief Meteorologist, Melissa Pry, for the latest on this storm. Yeah, some pretty rough road conditions out there. We're also hearing impacts to Minnesota, which you saw at the beginning of that video and Seward Highway as well. So just keep it safe out there tonight. It's a lot of snow that's already accumulating, making for slick road conditions, but visibility also really being impacted. This is the view right now from Midtown Anchorage. And with that snow falling, again, it just reduces how far you can see into the distance. Temperatures right now in 28 degrees, and we are beginning to see those winds increasing, which will continue for the next several hours. He should be prepared for gust between 20 and 40 miles per hour in town. That is going to cause blowing snow and also further limit that visibility. So that first alert weather day, in effect, because of these impacts from the southwest into south central tonight and tomorrow, we will see heavy rain in southeast today, but that will transition to snow for you heading into tomorrow afternoon. We also have snow continuing into the interior tonight and tomorrow and then wind ramping up. in southeast. This one storm really packing a punch, bringing those impacts from the southwest corner of the state through south central to the interior and beginning to ramp up in southeast. The center of the storm right now about Prince William Sound is on the back edge of that, though, that we're seeing the wind increasing and the snow increasing in Anchorage. Those winter weather advisories and warnings widespread across the state and high wind warnings now in effect for much of southeast where wind gas will climb between 50 and 60. miles per hour tomorrow. As for that heavier snow in Anchorage and the valley, it will taper off early tomorrow morning, and then we'll see just chances for light snow showers into the afternoon. That's also true for Fairbanks, but in southeast, again, seeing that transition from rain back to snow in the second half of the day tomorrow. And I'll have a closer look at those details here in a few minutes. All right, Melissa, thanks for tracking all of that. Lots to pay attention to out there. But now let's get to an update out of the Denali Borough. More families are able to... to leave their homes after weeks of heavy snowfall, there's more roads that were able to be plowed up there. And numerous families essentially trapped by snow for about a month with paths to the main roads virtually impossible to navigate. Through the weeks, we're told that neighbors have been helping each other dig with the use of equipment like tractors. Now that more residents are able to travel, they say they're grateful for simple things. It's a little, you know, not shocking, but it's like, oh, I'm not used to this. I'm not used to being able to go down and go with my mom and everybody to go actually go get shopping done. Many people like Heather Magrorty are out getting the essentials like gas and food. Donali Borough Mayor Chris Knoll urges people to call the nonprofit neighbor to neighbor if you need help with supplies.
In developing tonight, a Wasilla man linked to the 2023 homicide case of an Anchorage teen has been arrested by Alaska State Troopers, their SWAT team. 22-year-old Ian Miller was apprehended while he was driving on Nick Goose Bay Road on an active warrant. He was taken to the Matsu pretrial facility. State Troopers say Miller was indicted yesterday on second-degree murder, manslaughter, and tampering with evidence charges. in the death of Atea Banks. Banks was initially reported missing in November, 2023. Her remains were found in September of last year near Moose Meadows Road in Wasilla. We'll continue to follow this story on air and on our website. Well, Anchorage police are investigating a death in the 9,500 block of Brayton Drive. Officers say they responded to the scene just before 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon. That's where they found a woman in a vehicle who had been shot in her upper body. She did die at the scene. Now, we are working to get more information. We will bring that to you as soon as we learn more. Well, fighting across the Middle East did continue today. President Donald Trump calling for unconditional surrender by Iran. Augusta, you spoke one-on-one with our senior senator here. Alaska's Lisa Murkowski. A little update on the conflict. Yeah, John Xi Jinping, we had an interesting conversation. We sat down today to talk shortly after the president made those comments. And although Senator Lisa Murkowski voted with the GOP majority in the Senate earlier this week to strike down a war powers resolution that would have withheld U.S. troops from further hostilities in Iran, she does continue to call. for Congress to engage with the White House to define the scope of what many are referring to as war. Senator Lisa Murkowski expressed support last Saturday for those initial strikes that were said to be intended to degrade Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities. Now she's saying in response to growing escalations and signals that this conflict will not be ending soon. She wants clarity from the Trump administration on what to expect and for Congress to engage on spending and oversight. We have the power of that purse. So we've been told to expect a supplemental request to fund our military. It should be up to Congress towards the end of the month, I'm told. But if what happens is just... I've used the term loosely, but an invoice laid down saying this is how much we need, whether it's $20 billion or $50. and just kind of a take it or leave it, we expect you to do it. That's not the way to engage Congress either. Now, in your conversation, did she tell you when she may expect to hear more information about Iran? Yeah, she did mention the first oversight hearing for the Defense Appropriations Committee is scheduled for next week. And in that meeting, she's hoping to get some clarity. I'll have more on this interview tonight on the late edition.
The Alaska Special Olympics Winter Games are finally here. And to get the athletes pumped up and ready to go, the opening ceremony is taking place tonight. Joe All Good is live at Betty Davis, East Anchorage High School. Joe, things getting ready to go here in just a few minutes. I'm here at East High School where the Special Olympics Winter Games opening ceremony is about to get underway, and I'm joined by President and CEO of Special Olympics Alaska, Sarah Arts. Sarah, can you tell us just a bit about what sports are going to be played this weekend across Anchorage? Yeah, so we have floor hockey taking place over at Clark Middle School. We've got alpine skiing and snowboarding, which they'll have plenty of snow out at hilltop, and then we've got cross-country skiing and snowshoeing here at East High. Yeah, I'm glad you brought up the extra snow we're getting. It's coming down pretty hard right now. Can you tell us how that's going to impact the games for the athletes? The athletes are so excited. They've been doing their snow dances. We had to cancel cross-country skiing snowshoe last year, so they are pumped, and we just can't wait to get started. Yeah, it's completely different from last year where there was almost none this time of year. And then I always like to ask, if you, I know it's hard to choose, but if you had to pick, do you have any favorite games or events that are going to be going on this weekend? You know, it is so hard to pick a favorite because I just love watching our athletes compete. So I'm going to be going to everything. All right. Well, you know, it's like picking your favorite child or, you know, it's just very hard.
