From the Queen City Podcast Network, this is CLT First. Charlotte's first daily news podcast and home of your five-second weather. CLT First is presented by Caregiving Corner, your advocate for aging well by supporting connection, well-being, and independence. Thank you, Caregiving Corner. I'm Stuart Watson. It's Monday, November 24th, 2025, sunny skies high, 65, low 44. North Carolina's Senator Thom Tillis may be empowered by his impending retirement. I actually spoke out against last week's Border Patrol assault on Charlotte and other cities around the state, some 400 people arrested. And there's still no verifiable word on just where they're being held. Thom Tillis blames. Wait for it, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Gary McFadden for the Border Patrol's activity, saying his sanctuary city policies force the Border Patrol's hand. However, Thom Tillis did say that Homeland Security owes Congress and the public a list identifying those detained and a clear explanation of where they are. In other words, the rule of law. Tell us the statement came during a Senate Judiciary hearing on Thursday and not during the session's main agenda. Meantime. WFAE reports the city of Charlotte has set aside $100,000 to offset losses for households affected by the raids, whether that be lost wages, lost income for a local business. Crisis Assistance Ministry is handling the applications and will distribute the funds. The Charlotte Center for Legal Aid, Outbridge for Kids, the Latin American Coalition and the Carolina Migrant Network, are also helping to identify families in need. The long-delayed arts grants approved by the city in 2024 have been distributed. The Charlotte Ledger reports our friends that Charlotte is Creative, administered, and distributed the grants to 106 local arts organizations and individual artists. 39%, almost 4 and 10 of the 272 applicants got some funding. which Charlotte's creatives Tim Minor says is more than we could have ever hoped for. Some 82 million Americans are expected to travel this Thanksgiving week by air, by land, by rail. Most, according to AAA and WFAE, by car. That means jammed up roads and probably some frustration unless you follow these simple tips from AAA. Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons are the absolute worst time to leave if you're driving. Leave before noon on Tuesday and before 11 on Wednesday to avoid backups in congested areas. If you're driving back after the holiday, your instinct may be to leave on Monday.

You're partially correct. AAA says leave after 8 p.m. on Monday. Everyone else had the same idea as you about the post- Thanksgiving drive home. And of course, if you're looking for someone to listen to while you travel, there are more than 6,000 episodes of all kinds of podcasts to catch up on just from the Queen City Podcast Network. Just a suggestion. In a moment, the end of the season for the Golden Bulls. My name is Jennifer Socky, and I'm the founder and CEO of Caregiving Corner. Caregiving Corner works with families who are taking care of aging relatives and need assistance navigating the long-term care system. The older adult is our primary client, but what we're really doing is assisting the entire family, helping them make empowered and informed decisions for their loved one. Because we are independent, we can work with people who are actively planning for their retirement and their aging years, and then we're able to work with people for the entire duration of their aging experience all the way to end of life. If you are a family member of an aging, loved one and you're starting to have questions. Our website is caregivingcorner.com and our phone number is 704-945 7170. Our office is located at 6135 Park South Drive in Charlotte. At Caregiving Corner, we want to ensure that families have the support and guidance that they need and that their loved ones are receiving the quality of care that we would want for our own family members.

The best ever season for Johnson C. Smith's football team came to an unceremonious inn on Saturday in their first ever appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs. The Golden Bulls fell to Frostburg State, 21 to 7 right here in Charlotte, ending their season with 10 wins and just two losses. Head coach Maurice Flowers told the Charlotte Post after the game they beat our butt. No doubt that hurts to say, but there's a lot to feel good about this season. Congratulations, Golden Bulls. A lot to build on next year. Are you sitting down? Your Carolina Panthers are tied for the lead in the NFC South after the Tampa Bay Bucks lost to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday evening. The Panthers can take a half-game lead over the Bucks with a win at San Francisco tonight on Monday night football. Great piece from Ken Garfield, and the Charlotte Ledger is today's smile. Ellie Rubin lives in a 55-and-over community in Charlotte and brags that she drives like a New Yorker. She's a little bit older than 55. Ellie is 102. Nita Moss lives in a 55 and over community, still drives short distances, and wore her best flapper dress and danced at her most recent birthday party, her 105th. Nita has four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and she lets nothing interfere with Bridge on Tuesdays. Ellie survived breast cancer and losing her husband and her daughter. She says she's a survivor. Ken's got a great piece. Check it out in the Charlotte Ledger. It's Thanksgiving week in case you haven't noticed. And with that in mind, we wanted to let you know that we are thankful for you, dear listener. We're approaching two years on CLT First and yet another milestone. We've got some good things coming in 2026. So as always, thank you. Thank you. We are grateful for you. Tell two friends about us. As for this week, we'll have two episodes, the one today and tomorrow, and then we're taking the rest of the week off to be with our families. All four of my kids in town. All four of my kids, plus a boyfriend, plus a husband, a son-in-law. After tomorrow, we'll see you again on Monday, December the 1st. Until then, happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Isn't it great?
