And we are following that breaking news overseas. President Trump addressing Israeli parliament after all living hostages were freed. We'll have more on what he has to say coming up. Back here at home, we're following two breaking news stories in our area. On the left, the medical examiners on the scene of a person who has found dead after fire. That's on the right, actually. And a road is shut down in Ronald for a water main break. That's on the left side of your screen. We're gathering new information from the WRL breaking news tracker. And finally, our weekend nor'easter is moving eastward away from North Carolina. I'll show you how that impacts the rest of your Monday coming up. And Tar Hill turmoil. As UNC football prepares for its upcoming game against California Bears, we'll break down the questions that Bill Belichick and the rest of coaching staff are facing today. Yeah, a lot of people have been talking about this and we'll finally get some answers, hopefully. Thanks for staying with us here on WRL News. I'm Laura Levine. And I'm Ken Smith. Let's go ahead and get right back to meet. I'll just Chris Michaels in the WS severe weather center because you're tracking the big picture and the tropics as well. Yeah, the tropics waking up a little bit this morning at 5 o'clock. We learned that there is a new trial. storm, but it has absolutely zero effect on our weather. Just want to let you know that Lorenzo is out there and will be a tropical storm throughout the week. From the tropics to our doorstep, nothing to worry about, really. The radar is quieter now than it was. four or five hours ago when we had a few showers out there. It's just overcast now over Apex. One of those mornings that it's tough to get going because of the gloominess. Carrie is at 59. So is Durham Rocky Mount Garner's at 58, Goldsboro, at 61, all of us under the clouds. But eventually as we head deeper in the afternoon, we'll start to notice a little bit of a thinning in the cloud cover and high temperatures near 70 degrees. We'll track another cold front ahead of the state fair. What that means for the first few days coming up, Ken. we're tracking that breaking news, that water main break behind Crabtree Valley Mall shutting down part of Blue Ridge Road between Homewood Banks Drive and Crabtree Valley Avenue. That's where we find W.A.O.'s Ali Cadleap, part of the Breaking News tracker. And Michael joined her this morning. And it's still an active scene behind you, Allie.
Within the past 30 minutes, Ken, I've seen a few drivers attempt to go down the street here, and they returned away. This is still very active. Crews are still trying to make repairs, and you can see that behind me. We just saw a truck dump tons of dirt or material, and as you can see, the heavy machinery picking that up to further fill that hole. That hole was several feet deep in order for crews to fix and replace that water main break. Now, we know that a 12-inch pipe broke Saturday night. So crews have been working around the clock to make these repairs. We know the earliest that they said that this would all be fixed and reopened was the 2 p.m. today. And they said it could be even later. So Ken, we know some morning commuters, they're looking for some detours. What can you tell them? Yeah, you've got a handful of detours. And detours are posted, by the way. Homewood Bank Drive is actually an alternate route right there. Depending on where you're headed, Edwards Middle Road, Creedmoor Road, a couple of other options to avoid Blue Ridge Road all together this morning. We do have a crash on I-40 westbound near South Sounders Street. We're not seeing any delays in the air because take a look at our live cam network. You can see traffic flowing nicely in the east end westbound lanes near the south side of the street exit. So likely that crashes off to the shoulder of the road, not causing any slowdowns whatsoever. In terms of coming into the Capitol... City, things are really beginning to pick up for our loyal viewers up there in Wake Forest. You're heading into the car right now. You're looking at a four-minute delay. Things have gotten a lot better. If you're coming in from Nightdale, you're just looking at a one-minute delay if you're coming in from Nightdale this morning. Over in Durham, very little to no delays. Highway 98 continues to be a troubled spot for you. If you're coming in from Wake Forest to Durham on Highway 98, you're looking at an eight-minute delay. You're getting ready to head into the car. Tunis Center on the radio, 101.5, HD3. Now to breaking news in the last 10 minutes, we have learned a person is dead after a fire in Wendell this morning. You're looking at video from the WRL breaking news tracker of that scene. This happened on industrial drive off Wendell Boulevard. Crews found a camper fully engulfed when they responded just after 315 this morning. Audio from Broadcastify describes what they found when they arrived.
I'll just confirm when you said one fatality. That's correct. The medical examiner was on the scene this morning and police say this is an active investigation. Well, right now, more than 2,000 homes and businesses are without power in Durham. The outage is related to the winds last night, it appears. Now, Duke Energy says the power may not be restored until after 11 this morning. Part of UNC's campus is also in the dark this morning after a falling tree knocked down power lines in Chapel Hill. This is along West Cameron Avenue between Bass Night Lane and Keenan Street. The town says drivers can use West Franklin Street as a detour. About 600 homes in business. are without power. Duke Energy estimates power restoration around 7.30 this morning. And breaking overnight, police have a driver in custody after a chase that spanned nearly 70 miles. This is a look at that scene from the WRL breaking news tracker near Pool Road and Heritage Manor Drive in Raleigh. The chase started in Warsaw. Officers say the chase ended around 1.30 this morning after the driver ran out of gas. We're still trying to learn more information about the suspect and any possible charges. And happening right now in the WRA Live Center following some breaking news from overseas. President Trump addressing Israeli parliament right now. He's been speaking for about an hour. This all comes after 20 of these surviving hostages in Gaza have now been released. A first group of seven has returned to Israel while 13 others are on their way back to Israel after being released from Gaza. Earlier Trump expressed how happy he was and the significance of this release. We gather on a day of profound joy of soaring hope. After two harrowing years in darkness and captivity, 20 courageous hostages are returning to the glorious embrace of their families, and it is glorious. 28 more precious loved ones are coming home at last to rest in this sacred soil for all of time. And the president adding that long and painful nightmare is finally over. We will continue to monitor what he else he has to say here in the live center. And here at no home happening today, U.N.C. football coach Bill Belchick speaking to the media today. This will be the first time we hear from him since questions about dysfunction and toxicity in the locker room. Let's get to W.R. Kelsey coffee live at Chapel Hill this morning. Kelsey, what can we expect from him today? Ken, what we're really expecting is that Coach Bill Belichick will be really trying to keep the focus on the field during a news conference that's scheduled for later this morning. This morning will be the first time that we hear from him since we've learned all of this new information about what's happening inside the UNC football program.
A Washington Post sports reporter posted this photo on X of Belichick on Friday at an Our Lady of Good Counsel High School game in Maryland. He was there recruiting. Belichick's visit happening less than a week after W.R.L.'s reporting that tensions on the team are leading to a toxic culture. We spoke with the head coach at that high school, Andy Stefanelli on the phone. He said media reports about the state of the program did come up in his pregame meeting with one of Belichick's assistants. He did bring it up, said Stefanelli, a don't believe what you're hearing type of thing. They're kind of dealing with that internally in terms of talking to us and talking to recruits about, hey, things are fine, we're going to be all right. This week, UNC denied reports suggesting the school was exploring an exit strategy for Belichick. And we'll be sure to keep you updated on what's happening next as the tar heels are scheduled to play again on Friday night against California. You could watch the news conference that's scheduled for this morning at 1130 live anywhere you watch WRL on your TV or streaming device. Kelsey Coffey, WRL News, live in Chapel Hill. And of course, our WRA team will be covering all angles of today's press conference. We'll have live team coverage starting at noon. And, of course, tune into our early evening newscast starting at 4 p.m. for more coverage on Coach Bill Belichick and the UNC football program. The Raleigh community is remembering the lives lost in a deadly mass shooting. Today marks three years since a teenage gunman opened fire in the Heddingham neighborhood in East Raleigh. He killed five people and injured two others. So happening today, there will be an end-of-watch wreath laying ceremony to honor the memory of Raleigh Police Officer Gabriel Torres. He was on his way to work when he was shot and killed in the Heddingham neighborhood on October 13th, 2022. The ceremony is at the law enforcement training. Center on Law Enforcement Drive. That ceremony will get started at noon and it is open to the public. Meanwhile, a trial for the suspect, Austin Thompson, is set for February 2nd of next year. Thompson was 15 at the time of the shooting. He will stand trial as an adult on five counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and other charges. Thompson will not face a death sentence if convicted, and that's because federal law prohibits execution for those who were younger than 18 at the time of their crimes. We are tracking conditions all along the coast early this morning as the nor'easter bought high winds and flooding. several communities and is threatening more homes along the Outer Banks. Take a look at this video from Buxton this morning on Hatteras Island yesterday afternoon. Eight homes collapsed in Buxton more than a week ago. Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials say even more houses are on the brink of collapsing on the shores of the Outer Banks. Researchers say this is an environmental health issue with long-term effects. Deer County plans to begin a $45 million beach and re-nourishment program just next spring to rebuild the dune system and buff.
Highway 12. We have so much news to come here now, a deadly mass shooting. At least four people are dead after gunfire broke out at a bar in South Carolina. We have the latest on the search for the suspects and what we know so far about the investigation. And this morning as we're looking ahead to your exercise outlook, feeling pretty good out there, but I'll show you when you need to trade the lighter jacket for something a little thicker that's coming up in less than 10 minutes. Coming up on 814 and we continue to highlight some of the peak fall foliage and some of the higher elevations, especially around the Linco Viaduct, thanks to Rick Williamson for that great shot. And then our own Ali Cadillabar took advantage of the weekend and visited Grandfather Mountain as well. And it's always so cool to see the colors up against the overcast. I lived in the mountains for about 10 years and it just, it doesn't get old. Let's bring it back home and actually take you to the coast where our nor'easter is moving offshore and in its way. We'll be breezy at times today, but not quite like yesterday. A lot of the showers we had earlier this morning, moving out. Still breezy, but not as gusty as Sunday. And then cloud cover, we'll gradually see that clearing as we head from morning to afternoon. Then another cold front clears the area just ahead of the state fair. I'll show you how that affects the first few days. Ken. Hi, Chris. We have Raleigh Police working a crash this morning. And here's on the entrance ramp to Brittwood Road right near the belt line. We're seeing a little bit of slow. on that entrance ramp there on Brentwood and also a little bit of a slow down on that northern loop of the Beltline as well. That southern loop is what you're looking at now. Now I-40 Lake Wheatel Road, those are the westbound lanes moving away from us and moving a rather nice pace this morning. You see very little to no delays. No delays also if you're coming in from Garner and Johnson County between Highway 36 and the Beltline this morning. All right, Ken, thank you. Well, investigation is underway after a deadly mass shooting in South Carolina over the weekend. Now at least four people are dead and 20 others are injured after a shooting at a crowded bar on St. Helena Island. Investigators say a high school reunion was happening at the time of the shooting. The owner says he believes he heard what he thought was machine gunfire. But he says he saw no signs of trouble leading up to the shooting. Yeah, I just, I can't really comprehend, you know, just. why any human would take another human's life. You know, it's senseless. I mean, I just, I really, I just, I just, I just can't cover anything. Senseless, so authorities say they have identified persons of interest, but it's unclear if anyone is in custody. Right now, we're trying to learn more about a deadly crash in Southern Pines. This happened on Camp Easter Road just before seven last night. The one SUV involved in the crash overturned. The driver was killed. We're working to find out we'll let up to that crash and who the driver was. A 29-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot in Goldsboro this weekend. The shooting happened on Sherard Court late Saturday night. Deshawn Webb was taken to ECU Health Medical Center. Police are still investigating and have not announced any arrest at this time. A federal report says North Carolina has fallen short of federal special education standards yet again. WRO's Education Insider found the report faltered North Carolina schools for not meeting some deadlines and for not properly preparing students for life after high school. Schools took more than three months to decide whether over 12,000 students were eligible for special education. Schools took longer than a year to resolve findings of noncompliance more than 200 times. The State Department of Public Instruction
in part blames teacher turnover for not meeting federal requirements to serve children with disabilities. You can find out more about the report on WRL.com. The biggest open source conference on the East Coast is underway this week at the Raleigh Convention Center. Open source is software with code that anyone can inspect, change, and distribute usually for free. The conference has more than 4,000 registered attendees with about 500 companies represented. There are also more than 100 exhibitors and 200 sessions. A big draw for tech workers, the chance to network. So it's very rare that you have 100 of the largest, most influential tech companies in the world gathered in one place at one time. A lot of people maybe have been laid off or they're just getting started, their early career. So you can come here, you can meet people that are hiring. Really cool, so the All Things Open Conference runs through Tuesday. Rolley readers want to know for you what should be the top priorities for the next budget. The city is hosting an in-person budget listening session tonight. Registration is not required. Today's session will be at the JC Community Center on Wade Avenue from 6th this evening until 7.30. Another one is scheduled for tomorrow at the Laurel Hills Community Center as well. Former Vice President Mike Pence will be at UNCW today. Pence will be there as part of the school's Dare to Learn lecture series. That series explores leadership and the experiences and lessons of guests. That is happening tonight at Keenan Auditorium at 630. The event is free, but tickets are required. It's open to the public. A wet weekend didn't keep people away from the annual Walk for Hope on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh. Part of Glenwood was closed to traffic yesterday morning to make way for the walkers. WRL's Ken Smith, there he is right there. Him and his family, he participated as long as Willie Danieli as well and Gerald Owens. Now, the annual event raises money and awareness about research and treatment of mental illness. It's just so important for people to, for us to help eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness and that's one of the things that the Walk for Hope does. I know me personally and my family and a lot of other people in my life suffer from it and I believe it's great to bring awareness to it and to raise support because a lot of people out there suffer and silence.
WRL is a proud sponsor of that event. And we know we saw really a dreary start to the day yesterday. And you and I was talking a lot about the nor'easter, the king tide's impacting. So it's good to see that we're having some clear skies today. Yeah, we're going to start to clear it out little by little, right? But yeah, it'll take a little bit of time. There's your cloudy sky over Zebulin right now. A little breezy too, but the wind isn't going to be quite as rough as it was yesterday. Hey, maybe you have the day off, take advantage, head to a pumpkin patch. because that's time of year where we got to start thinking about carving those, right? Midday temperatures in the mid-60s. High temperatures today in the triangle near 70 degrees. Roanoke Rapids holding on to the clouds today at 65. Southern Pines and Fayetteville where you see a little bit more sunshine, you'll hit the lower 70s. So overall, a little bit of an improvement from the weekend. This comes as our nor'easter that big red L starts to move out to sea. And then high pressure just dives down from Canada. And you see the clockwise wind around that pulling in the air from the north. It's going to translate to some cool mornings and some pleasant afternoons as well. Really, as we head later in the week. Now, no one day this week is going to feel bad. We're going to have a lot of nice weather on the way. But the humidity really dips into a refreshing zone. And it's actually going to feel like mid to late October out there by Thursday and Friday. And that just sets the tone for this. stayed fair 68 the high on Thursday with plenty of sunshine Friday at about 70 degrees and then we start to see another shift in the wind direction heading into the weekend that favors us for some warmer air but even still nothing extreme Today, a high temperature of about 70 degrees, maybe a stray shower left over heading into the night. And then by tomorrow, we're in the mid-70s. Ditto for Wednesday with morning temperatures beginning in the 50s. Thursday morning, we'll start out about 45 to 50 degrees with highs in the 60s. And then we'll start out Friday as the chilliest of the week, temperatures in the low to mid-40s. And the thing about North Carolina weather, all you've got to do is blink and it'll change. Look at the weekend. High temperatures near 80 by Sunday. Oh, yeah. Right. Similarly with the traffic, Chris, happening now in the Delaware Traffic Center. We're seeing a bit of a slowdown there in those westbound lanes of I-40. I'll check that out and let you know how that's going to affect your morning commute. We'll also stay on top of this breaking news. Part of Blue Ridge Road is shut down between Homewood Banks Drive and Crabtree Valley Avenue. Here's a live look at that scene. Right now, they've been at that scene for several hours now. It's a situation where this street could be closed for several hours. You're looking at maybe Homewood Banks Drive. is an alternate round. Depending on where you headed, Blue Ridge Road, Edwards Mill, Creedmoor Road, a couple of options to just avoid what's happening there. Because here's what I'm talking about. They're waiting right now to repave that road. But you see, they're making progress. But if you live in that area, you know it's going to take some time to get around that situation. There's a problem that we're seeing on that exit ramp there to Brentwood Road. But things are beginning to clear up just nicely right now. That northern loop of the Beltline, you're looking at a four-minute delay from Capitol. all the way over the Wade Avenue this morning. You get right to head into the car. Tune us in on the radio. 101.5, age 3. And your time now is 823. Safe infant sleep. Five on your side has the urgent message and sleep product warning for parents and caregivers. Plus.
Federal confusion. The government says it received incorrect notifications about layoffs amid the shutdown. What the Trump administration is doing to clear things up. The time is 826. I'm Laura Levine. Let's get right over to meteorologist Chris Michaels with a look at the forecast, Chris. And Laura, aside from the clouds, it's not a bad start to the morning. Temperature-wise, feeling pretty comfortable. Most of us in the upper 50s, we'll gradually get rid of the clouds today, but it's going to be kind of a slow process. Midday, we're still partly to mostly cloudy in the mid-60s. Highs this afternoon near 70 degrees, so that, too, is an improvement from the weekend. Speaking of the weekend, we'll show you how today's... wind compares to yesterday and we'll look ahead to the first few days of the state fair forecast. It's over on Fox 50 in just a few. Happening now, the W. Traffic Center, Boy, we see a real congestion building on those westbound lanes of I-40 right around starting at Wade Avenue going toward Durham this morning. It's a situation that's a usual morning traffic that we see this time of the morning. So we're working to see exactly what's going on there. And if there's a crash, we'll let you know about it. In terms of other routes coming into the Capitol. City, you're looking at a two-minute delay if you're coming in from Wake Forest this morning, and just a one-minute delay if you're coming in from Nightdale at this hour. Now to that breaking news this morning, a person is dead after a fire in Wendell. This is video from the WRL breaking news tracker. This happened on industrial drive off Wendell Boulevard. The medical examiner was on the scene and police say this is an act of investigation. And a road is shut down in Raleigh this morning as cruise repair a water main break. This is a live look at that scene on Blue Ridge Road. The road has been shut down since early Sunday morning and officials tell us the road could be open as early as this afternoon. Next on Fox 50, UNC's Bill Belichick is speaking to the media today as reports circulated about turmoil in the locker room. And coming up on today, tips on saving money this Halloween. Stay with us.
And we continue to follow that breaking news out of the Middle East. President Trump over there speaking to the Israeli parliament will have more on what he had to say about the remaining hostages being freed. And we are staying on top of two breaking news stories right now. Crews working to fix Blue Ridge Road in Rale after a water main break and at least one person is dead after a fire in Wendell. The information just coming in from the WRL breaking news tracker. And this weekend's North Easter is moving out of the area. It's the calm after the storm. We'll show you how today's wind compares to yesterday's coming up. And taking questions today, we'll hear from Bill Belichick for the first time after reports of a toxic culture in the U.N.C. football locker room, his efforts to keep the focus on the field. We'll have all that and more coming up in this half hour. Thanks for staying with us. I'm Kenneth. And I'm Laura Levine. Well, here right now today, we are getting much needed relief after a really wet weekend meteorologist Chris Michaels tracking the forecast for us. And Chris, we need this, especially those folks on the coast. Yeah, the coast we're dealing with all that wind. I mean, they saw wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour. The rain needed in our part of the area, but now starting to move out. We're left with the overcast over Fenton and Kerry, where it's currently in the upper 50s. It'll be a slow climb with regards to temperatures today. We're in the mid-60s by midday and a little bit of clearing in the sky heading into the afternoon. Now, it's not going to be wall-to-wall sunshine, but it'll at least be an improvement from the weekend and high temperatures near 70. Out the door. tomorrow morning at the bus stop, temps in the 50s. We're back in the low to mid-70s tomorrow afternoon, but this week features those typical ebbs and flows in our temperatures, so much so that we'll be in the 40s some mornings. We'll show you what's causing that and how that sets the tone for the NC State Fair coming up, Ken. All right, happening now at the W.O. Traffic Center, we're staying on top of that breaking news. A water main break on Blue Ridge Road, shutting that part of that road between Homewood Banks Drive and Craftree Valley Avenue. That's where we find. W.A. is Ali Caddabar and the W.A.R. Breaking News tracker. Ali, that scene continues to be active behind you. Very active, Ken. And I want to show you what caused all of these problems here that pipe... that's laying on that trailer there. You can see it's dirty and rusted as well. And then panning over to the active scene here, we saw crews down deep inside of a hole where they were making those repairs and replacements. And then they filled up that hole throughout the morning, and now they are still leveling out waiting to repave the road. That 12-inch pipe burst. It happened on Saturday night. And we know crews have been working around the clock to make those replacements, make those repairs. But they said the earliest that they could get this stretch back open is 2 p.m. Monday. The latest would be Tuesday or Wednesday. So people are having to take some detours this morning. Ken, what kind of detour should they take? Yeah, and the good news, clearly they're listening to us because not very many people have been trying to get down Blue Ridge Road because really and truly Homewood Bank's Drive is an alternate route. And depending on where you're headed this morning, Edwards Mill Road, Creedmoor Road, are a couple of officers.
to avoid what's happening there on Blue Ridge Road. We'll keep you updated this morning. Traffic is really beginning to pick up on major routes like I-40 East and Westbound. Those are the Westbound lanes moving away from us this morning. It was a little bit more jammed up, but it's beginning to clear up just a little bit. Other routes coming into Wake County Capital City. You can see a two-minute delay if you're coming in from Wake Forest, just a one-minute delay if you're coming in from Nightdale this morning. So things have really cleared up on I-87. Things are getting a little better. in Wake Forest and you're trying to get to Durham this morning. In Highway 98, you're looking at a seven-minute delay. That's the slowdown that we just showed you there in Wade Avenue. That's a three-minute delay you're looking at. And just a two-minute delay on 501 this morning there in Durham. You're getting ready to head into the car. Tune us in on the radio. We'll keep you updated on your morning commute. 101.5 HD3. Crews have cleared the scene of a fire in Wendell where one person was found dead. This is video from the WRL breaking news tracker. This happened on industrial drive off Wendell Boulevard. Crews found a camper fully engulfed when they responded just after 3.15 a.m. Police say that this is an active investigation. Right now, more than 200 or 2,000 homes and businesses are without power in Durham. This is in Durham County near RTP, that outage is related to the winds last night. Duke Energy says power may not be restored until 11 this morning. Now, part of UNC's campus is also in the dark this morning after a falling tree knocked down power lines in Chapel Hill. This is along West Cameron Avenue between Bass Night Lane and Keenan Street. The town says drivers can use West Franklin Street as a detour. About 600 homes and businesses are without power. Duke Energy estimates power restoration around 7.30 this morning. Or 10 a.m. Also breaking overnight, Laura, police have a driver in custody after officers chased that person and it spanned nearly 70 miles. This is a look at the scene from the WRA breaking news tracker near Pool Road and Heritage Manor Drive in Raleigh. The chase started in Warsaw. Officers say the chase ended around 1.30 this morning after the driver ran out of gas. We're still trying to learn more. about the person responsible and they were chasing or any possible charges that person could face. Breaking news. Within the last 25 minutes, we just got brand new video of one of the Israeli hostages freed by Hamas, reuniting with his family. Take a look here. You can see Guy Gila Bowa delal hugging his family. He was kidnapped back on October 7, 23, by Hamas and taken to Gaza. Wow. He and 19 other living hostages were released this morning. This is all part of a peace deal between Israel and Hamas after two years of war. Some really powerful video there, Laura. Also, President Trump addressed Israel's Israeli parliament. He spoke for over an hour. He wrapped up about 10 minutes ago. He said, we've done the impossible. We have brought our hostages home. All 20 of these surviving hostages in Gaza have now been released. Seven have been returned to Israel and 13 others are on their way back right now. And earlier when President Trump was still speaking, he said it was an honor to be there. Take a listen.
Generations from now, this will be remembered as the moment that everything began to change and change very much for the better. Like the USA right now, it will be the golden age of Israel and the golden age of the Middle East. It's going to work together. Also earlier at the end of his speech, we also wanted to note that President Trump asked Israeli President Isaac Herzog to actually pardon Benjamin Netanyahu, who is involved in an ongoing corruption trial. So he did ask for that pardon. We will continue to follow this for you here in the Live Center. Michelle, thank you. Today we'll hear from UNC head coach Bill Belichick for the first time since reports of dysfunction and toxicity in the locker room gained national attention.
